The higher your Base Attack Bonus (BAB) the more attacks per round you are afforded. This is determined by your levels/classes. Additionally, certain abilities grant additionall attacks per turn (ie. haste, the monk's Flurry of Blows, Rapid Shot).
More:<hr />when you say Base Attack Bonus, that is refering to the attack bonus - any + gear?<hr />It is the attack bonus without any modifiers applied at all, be they enhancement bonuses, strength modifiers, etc.
