It's a fine line we walk with that.

Many people take serious offense when a moderator edits their post.

I have done it a few times in the past, in order to keep from seeing someone in trouble, only to receive PMs full of some very colorful language.

So, now that warnings and editing and closing threads seems to happen without any real results - and we see the same people arguing and flaming over and over again, different methods are called for.

This is just a suggestion, but perhaps understanding the nature of the beast would help in these cases.

There are clearly two types of people who would engage in sniping and personal attacks.

1) Those who simply want to cause a problem and thus their comments have no purpose and no reason to be there

2) Those who in general are good and decent but for some reason have an emotional response to something that was said and would usually understand and correct their mistake if approached with decency instead of a counter-snipe or personal attack

Would it be of value for the moderators to simply remove such insults from posts, especially where they add absolutely no value to the topic at hand? Or perhaps this is done after a warning or something. While I do understand that on the surface this may seem like an extreme measure, and I do feel that there should be some very clear guidelines on how to identify such posts, but failing a request for the specific people to calm down, I dont think it is unreasonable to edit out such comments.

It does appear to be a grey area, but hopefully those who simply wish to cause problems would cease to do so when comments they make that has no value to the topic and which very clearly shows nothing but personal attacks would stop.

I hasten to add that in editing such posts a very clear and consise reason should be given as to why, to the point where the person who wrote it knows exactly why it was removed (ie "Sniping attack at X" or "Personal attack as to how Y chooses to post", or "Negative comments about why person Z would be writing that")
