View Full Version : Computer Sounds
Dark Haired Beauty Fri, 3rd Sep '04, 7:12pm I just recently noticed my laptop is making a low clicking sound. Since my speakers are muted its not coming from the sound card. Should I assume this isn't good and expect the worse or is this just something normal?
Rednik Fri, 3rd Sep '04, 7:44pm Well, my friend had a hard drive in his desktop computer which was dying to the heat in the room, and in it's last moments it produced a steady cllicking sound.
Maybe it's time to back up important files just in case.
Dark Haired Beauty Fri, 3rd Sep '04, 7:48pm Thanks for the advice Red...oh lord...reaches for the prozac.
ToTaL Fri, 3rd Sep '04, 9:54pm Hmmm, yes, be carefull with important data on your clicking HDD, you never know! If it is still under warranty, test it (there is software for that, depends on manufacturer) and return it before it runs out!
Wordplay Fri, 3rd Sep '04, 11:59pm It might be just the cooling, like dust got into the propels or something. But since the only other moving part is your HDD...
Got one busted too: it was some cheap Quantum Fireball and kept loud, clicking noise before breaking the service-contract.
chevalier Sat, 4th Sep '04, 12:07am Had problems with my old Quantum Fireball as well. CD-ROM readers also make strange sounds when something's wrong with them.
If Windows no longer likes your soundcard driver, it lets out clicking sounds on various occasions using PC Speaker.
ToTaL Sat, 4th Sep '04, 10:24am Lol, yet another Quantum Fireball here... But hey, she should have noticed if the clicking sound starts if she puts CD in the drive, or Floppy drive... Got one idea, try to turn down your HDD in Windows Power managment, and if the clicking sound continues, it could be just fan, but that is also unpleasant problem since your laptop could overheat...
Harbourboy Wed, 8th Sep '04, 1:54pm My cooling fan often makes a clicking noise when it gets out of alignment. Also, I used to have a problem whereby my computer would make a clicking noise whenever I moved the mouse, which was very annoying and I never did find a solution (other than turning the volume down).
Sydax Wed, 8th Sep '04, 9:39pm I get that clicking when I press any keyboard key, I found that my amplifier had no ground, but I still get the sound; is important to know what's the real source is, so if you can you have to open your pc and try to figure out where it come from.
And I also have a Quantum Fireball 20 30
Ziad Thu, 9th Sep '04, 2:59pm ANOTHER clicking Quantum Fireball here :D It usually clicks a couple of times when I start the PC.
I also have 2 Western Digital drives that have odd sounds. One makes an odd metallic sound from time to time (twice or thrice a day maybe), and the other sometimes goes on a clicking spree. It's actually closer to very loud scratching sounds, and when it starts it freezes the computer for several seconds. Needless to say I don't have anyting of value on the drive anymore :)
ToTaL Mon, 13th Sep '04, 11:26am About that sound during moving mouse, it is problem with power supply, ok, not really problem, but it happens if you have low quality power supply, that is what i have heard, but still, when i bought new power supply (i had MS, now Fortron) i never noticed it again...
Dave the Magic Turtle Mon, 13th Sep '04, 12:58pm Could it possibly be the imp inside getting tired from all that running, maybe you should try feeding him more...or find a replacement :D
Any way my desktop makes lots of noise, and I think its just the fan that is slightly miss alined, but it still works...just! ;)
