View Full Version : VONAGE, Does It Work?
Mathetais Fri, 10th Sep '04, 8:06pm As you may know, my wife and I are packing up to move to Seattle in a few weeks. When we arrive, we are thinking of trying out Vonage VONAGE (http://www.vonage.com) for our local & LD phone service.
Have any of you used this, or other broadband IPT services? How's the quality of service? Any jitter, latency or "tinny" sound?
My wife would be using this for her business, so its kinda important that it is "toll quality"
Thanks in advance!
:good:
Blackthorne TA Fri, 10th Sep '04, 8:12pm I have seen reviews that Voange is pretty good. The disadvantage is that it relies on your broadband connection. If your connection is unreliable, or you have a power outage, you lose your phone service.
Kitrax Fri, 10th Sep '04, 8:27pm True, but these days, 90% of people own cordless phones, so if the power goes out, you still can't use the phone since the base unit is dead.
I just signed up for Qwest phone and DSL. My dad has had Qwest for the past 5 years, and since he's the biggest cheapscate I've ever known, Qwest must be good, otherwise he'd cancel it without a second thought. :rolling:
Taluntain Fri, 10th Sep '04, 8:47pm Ours don't work if the power goes out, i.e. the base unit dies. If they can't connect to the base, they're useless.
Blackthorne TA Fri, 10th Sep '04, 8:56pm I would think everyone has at least one corded phone in their house that will always work. I know I do :) But if that doesn't matter to you, then don't worry about it... For a phone for a business, I'd think it would matter.
Sir Belisarius Fri, 10th Sep '04, 11:33pm I've heard good things about Vonage as well...But I'm still thinking of nixxing my land line altogether. I never use it, no one but telemarketers call me...I can just use my cell phone!!!
Satiana Fearbringer Wed, 29th Sep '04, 1:40am I am thinking of going to Cox. They will do phone, cable t.v., and cable modem as a package deal.
Wondering myself how good it will be.
Blackthorne TA Wed, 29th Sep '04, 4:00am As far as cable TV and cable modem, Cox has been excellent in my area.
Orkrist the Cleaver Wed, 29th Sep '04, 4:18am I've heard vonage is great, but I would shy away from any cable provider's phone service. I tried it and it sucked. Its basically a satellite connection, so its kind of like a cel phone. People would call me and I could hear them but they couldn't hear me, or I would get disconnected. Also, if you call your bank or anywhere else that requires you to push numbers on the key pad to be routed, many times the other phone won't hear your numbers. Also, if it matters, they are often not fax-machine compatible. But, I've heard Vonage, and other VON providers are OK.
Elios Wed, 29th Sep '04, 7:06am I'd recommend getting a cell if you can broadband of DSL and just nixxing the land line as well.
When I ran my business I had a cell for calls. I could recieve faxes through my computer's internet connection. Or I could jsut get attachments to email.
