View Full Version : X-box - does it cut the mustard or is it all hype?
Viking Thu, 4th Apr '02, 5:24pm OK, so I haven't bought it yet. Seems a lot to pay for a new toy, when I'm thinking of upgrading to a new PC.
Anyone think it really is all it's meant to be? Are the games available that make it the nuts? Or is it an over-hyped, wait till it drops in price sort of console.
Just curious.
joacqin Thu, 4th Apr '02, 7:58pm Well imo all machines are overhyped wait until the price drops. Why pay 400$ now when you can get it for 200$ in a year? By then lots of new cool games will be out too. The games that are released with the consoles are most of graphic intensive gamepplay poor showoffs.
Mollusken Thu, 4th Apr '02, 10:01pm Upgrade your computer. Xbox is a computer (and not a very good one).
the god Thu, 4th Apr '02, 10:47pm depends what types of games you play the most. if it's CRPGs (who plays those stupid things?) upgrade!
however, one of my housemates has halo, which kicks serious :alien: butt.
[deity edity]: as mollusken says, xbox is just a computer with less power. but that power is directed entirely towards games-playing.

Shralp Thu, 4th Apr '02, 11:11pm Yeah, I think X-Box is cool for the games like HALO. But it'd be smarter to spend some money for a good controller and some games for my computer than to spend $400 for a MS product.
But if you're going to get a console, X-Box is the way to go. I like PS2, but I haven't had as much fun with it as with the X-Box stuff.
Z-Layrex Thu, 4th Apr '02, 11:13pm Yes the X-Box is the most powerful but, it's so badly designed and my god it's LOUD  !!!
I've played Halo and it's not really very good. Run down the corridor, shoot alien, recharge...etc. BORING
Really, either get a PS2 or better still upgrade your PC.
Viking Fri, 5th Apr '02, 2:33pm 1.7ghz P4, 40-60mb HD, 1gb ram, XP, + the DVD and CDR from my old PC sounds about the ticket then. Could pick that up for about £500. Better than spending £300 + on the X-box. Anyone know if the XP games compatibility problems have been sorted out yet?
I'll probably get a PS2 when they hit about £150 or so though. GTA 3 and MGS 2 look pretty much like "must play" games.
Shralp Fri, 5th Apr '02, 4:46pm Z, you twerp!
Don't play the mission levels on HALO! Play multi-player. Zoinks!
GuarMar487 Fri, 5th Apr '02, 11:07pm actually, XboX is ony $300, and what makes it better then other console systems, they will soon be offering upgrades to games and to the system through demo disks, and then save it onto the hard drive.
Eilonwy Sat, 6th Apr '02, 8:53pm I dont have X-box but my uncle do. He says it aint that good. Better to buy something new to your puter, he says. But, what do I know!

Orkrist the Cleaver Sat, 6th Apr '02, 11:41pm If you've got the money for a console, go for it. I like to play some console games to break up the heavy-duty PC style. I bought an X-BOX, and I would say there just isn't much for it right now but its coming. The LOTR game, Morrowind, Knights of the Old Republic (star Wars)and a few others have my attention. My friends all have PS2s so I bought a BOX. Now they all want a BOX. It is a bit loud though, but I only notice when its loading anyway. HALO is a strong game. Sure its just shooting aliens, but there are other elements to it, like shooting more aliens and flying their ships around. Plus, the world design, architecture and overall story are kind of cool.
Z-Layrex Sun, 7th Apr '02, 5:25pm HEY Shralp!
I'm not a twerp! :hahaerr:
I've played MP too.
It's even WORSE!!!
Less shooting than in single player plus it's just as DULL>
Run down field, shoot friend with crappy character image....run away...repeat for the next hour....etc.
