He's suddenly disappeared from all news headlines some time ago, and we haven't heard anything since. And this was in the middle of his trial, as far as I remember. Anyone got any details why it's all gone quiet?

View Full Version : What happened to Saddam? Taluntain Fri, 1st Apr '05, 1:19pm He's suddenly disappeared from all news headlines some time ago, and we haven't heard anything since. And this was in the middle of his trial, as far as I remember. Anyone got any details why it's all gone quiet? joacqin Fri, 1st Apr '05, 1:45pm No idea, now that you mention it is a bit odd. The trial has probably stalled for some reason and nothing new/interesting has happened so there has not been anything to report. Carcaroth Fri, 1st Apr '05, 2:21pm He was in the local press recently with regards to the fact his lawyers don't even know which country he is currently imprisoned in. Rallymama Fri, 1st Apr '05, 4:06pm He's been given asylum in Pinellas Park, Florida. ;) Seriously, I don't know. Had the real trial actually begun? I thought they were still working through the preliminary phases. Aldeth the Foppish Idiot Fri, 1st Apr '05, 4:43pm AFAIK, Rally is right, the official trial had NOT yet begun. This trial is a very convoluted process, namely because he isn't a U.S. citizen, and the crimes committed were not on U.S. soil. And while not getting into whether that's right or wrong, I fully suspect it will be years before the actual trial commences. Look at how long we've been dealing with Slodoban Milosovic (sp?) from former Yugoslavia. I know that trial continued well into the 2000s and that was years after he was formally arrested. Death Rabbit Fri, 1st Apr '05, 10:40pm Yeah, I'm pretty sure the official trial hasn't begun yet. What I think you recall seeing Tal was just the arraignment stage for the trial. They'd said on the news at the time that the official trial won't begin for several months to a few years. Sydax Mon, 4th Apr '05, 12:08am Last thing I heard was the killing of one of the lawyers (I don't know how to say it, one who is in the trials against him?) and a judge who is in the same trial, and the attempt to kill another one. Sticker Fri, 8th Apr '05, 11:30am I just read a story in a newspaper yesterday, said he was being held at a base (Camp something) near the Bagdad airport. Tassadar Fri, 8th Apr '05, 2:53pm LOL yeah what has happened to him? We haven't heard anything for ages. What, is he not flavour of the month anymore? ;) Ragusa Fri, 8th Apr '05, 3:28pm I'm curious about the charges against him. If the trial is anything worth there will be evidence be brought up against him, and evidence by the defense. Maybe we learn more about a thing or two. But then, I think they want him convicted so bad, they'll rig the trial accordingly. If Ahmed Chalabi's nephew is deeply involved that's definitely a possibility. So, well, I'm curious. But isn't or wasn't he held at that US base in Quatar? Sticker Fri, 8th Apr '05, 3:58pm This is the story (http://www.deccan.com/Neighbours/NeighboursNews.asp) (if you can call it that) I read: Saddam gets to watch TV Baghdad, April 6: Iraq’s detained former dictator Saddam Hussein and 11 top aides was to watch on TV Wednesday’s Parliamentary session to choose the country’s first freely-elected President, human rights minister Bakhtiar Amin said. “I decided that Saddam and the 11 others will watch it on the television,” Mr Amin told reporters. “There will be a place in jail for Saddam and the 11 to watch the TV to understand their time is finished, there is a new Iraq and that they are no longer ruling the country; so they can understand that in the new Iraq, people are elected and they are not coming to power by a coup d’état.” Saddam and his aides are being held at the US prison Camp Cropper at Baghdad airport and face trial on charges of crimes of humanity. Saddam, who was captured in December 2003 after his regime fell in April that year three weeks after the US-led invasion, could be hauled into the dock later this year. :D Hacken Slash Fri, 8th Apr '05, 8:51pm There can be no trial until Iraq has a Justice system. There can be no Justice system unti Iraq has a government. There can be no government until the provisional assembly decides who gets to sit in what chair at the meeting to decide who gets to sit in what chair at the next meeting. Morgoroth Fri, 8th Apr '05, 11:22pm Perhaps the neocons are building a "zoo" of evil dictators. I bet that would be quite an attraction. In a few years they might add Kim Jong Il and Robert Mugabe in their collection. Of course the problem would be to get these to reproduce, there just aren't enough of evil female dictators around. ;) Taluntain Fri, 8th Apr '05, 11:54pm What about C... oh, wait, wrong side of the axis. |
