View Full Version : We talk a lot about sport, but which ones do we play ourselves Merlanni Sun, 14th May '06, 6:37pm As the tiltle says what do you play. I play fieldhockey Maurolava Sun, 14th May '06, 6:41pm I play soccer as much as I can. Felinoid Sun, 14th May '06, 6:43pm Volleyball. Harbourboy Sun, 14th May '06, 8:57pm Cricket, golf, indoor soccer, and indoor netball. Saber Sun, 14th May '06, 9:35pm Ultimate Frisbee (rock on), and baseball. I stopped playing baseball for frisbee this year. The Kilted Crusader Sun, 14th May '06, 10:08pm None, really, but I'll play football (the real football none of this girly american nonsense ;) ) when the chance presents itself (goalkeeper extraordinaire, me ;) ) DarkStrider Sun, 14th May '06, 10:43pm I used to play Cricket, Rugby Union, Table Tennis and Fence, now I play Golf teekc Sun, 14th May '06, 10:47pm <- a geek doesn't play sport Benan Mon, 15th May '06, 4:52am Hockey, golf and baseball. I used to play football. But I got out of school and that ended. Ilmater's Suffering Mon, 15th May '06, 5:37am Blew out my rotator cuff when I was 15 and haven't been able to play any sports since then! iLLusioN' Mon, 15th May '06, 5:45am I feel for ya Ilmater's Suffering. I tore two tendons(Rotator cuff and another one) in my throwing arm a couple years ago...surgery on the one and extensive rehab on both..Am now starting varsity pitcher for my high school baseball team and one of the 4 starters for my American Legion team. I'll play basketball and football(american) for fun as well. Played soccer until i was 12 or so then there were no teams in the area so i quit playing. Barmy Army Mon, 15th May '06, 2:13pm I like a round of golf (although I suck). I'm pretty good at pool and play it often. I also like snooker but am not very good at it. I play football now and again, but I don't have the fitness to play it properly anymore! I like a game of cricket as well. Don't often get the time or chance though (not many places around here where I can get a game either). I can touch 80mph with my pacers :) . Shame I'm about as accurate as a fart! henkie Mon, 15th May '06, 3:27pm Are pool, snooker, golf and the like actually sports? To me sports should involve some form of physical exertion, but others may view this differently I guess. Me, I do triathlon. That means a lot of running, biking and swimming, though I mostly bike lately. Barmy Army Mon, 15th May '06, 6:19pm A sport is any activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. :thumb: Even darts is a sport. I play that too. Merlanni Mon, 15th May '06, 7:32pm What is netball? teekc Mon, 15th May '06, 7:32pm So counterstrike is sport too? yeah i play that. Harbourboy Mon, 15th May '06, 7:37pm Netball is a game that is really only played to any extent in England, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and South Africa. It's like basketball but without dribbling. It's primarily a women's sport. New Zealand are the current World Champions and Commonwealth Games gold medallists. Bahir the Red Mon, 15th May '06, 7:47pm Basketball, and I also practise bodybuilding, but not at a competitive level. Barmy Army Mon, 15th May '06, 10:34pm So counterstrike is sport too? yeah i play that. The difference is there is a physical dimension to darts, snooker or pool however undemanding it may be on your body. Think about the technique involved to be consistently accurate over the course of a match. It's the same deal with bowls, or shooting (an Olympic event). Physical fitness isn't that important but there is a physical emphasis on technique, precision, etc. Gaming is purely mental. How you press the buttons to win the game is irrelevant. It's the same with chess, which some people insist on calling a sport. It's purely mental. How you move the pieces (not the same as where you move them) is irrelevant to the final result. As such it's a game. Arabwel Mon, 15th May '06, 10:36pm Cycling and swimming :D used to do both yoga and horseback riding waaay back and think would like to staet again sometime in the future... henkie Tue, 16th May '06, 11:33am The difference is there is a physical dimension to darts, snooker or pool however undemanding it may be on your body. And whenever I see those guys in the Embassy who are easily twice my weight, I find it very hard to think of darts as a sport. Cúchulainn Tue, 16th May '06, 11:37am Fencing (epee) and Muay Thai (kickboxing), Cycling, simming and some weightlifting  Sydax Tue, 16th May '06, 11:40am @Harbourboy: we used to play netball at school back in Argentina and as you said, it was mostly played by girls, so it was a shame if you were seen playing it, but we didn't care at all. I used to play basketball, now, occasionaly. I play soccer; often table tennis and pool, although I would love to play snooker but there aren't any tables around here; sometimes I enjoy some chess games with a couple of friends who can't beat me :nono:  Barmy Army Tue, 16th May '06, 12:46pm henkie, But a computer can play a game like Counterstrike. Hence, it is not a sport. Rallymama Tue, 16th May '06, 1:45pm I used to be a competitive fencer, then hung up the epees and took up long-distance cycling when I hooked up with Velcro (amazing what meeing a new bf while riding can do for your mileage! ;) ). Since becoming a mom, tho', my primary sport is kid-schlepping. We do some cycling with the kids but not as much as we'd like. We do more walking in the woods, and now Arlyn has taken it into his head that he wants to hike the Appalachian Trail (http://www.appalachiantrail.org/site/c.jkLXJ8MQKtH/b.1423119/k.BEA0/Home.htm) someday. We'd better start training! Barmy Army Tue, 16th May '06, 5:48pm Is 'Velcro' short for something or a nickname? :hmm: Rallymama Tue, 16th May '06, 6:07pm LOL, BA. Velcro is my hubby's nick here on the BoM. He doesn't post much. ;) Barmy Army Tue, 16th May '06, 6:13pm Ah, I see! I was just thinking he had cruel parents or something :D . Get him to post more :) . Bion Tue, 16th May '06, 7:04pm Well, I guess it's better to be in a relationship with a 'Velcro' than with a 'Teflon,' right? :shake: As for sports, up to last year I played soccer with an intramural grad student team, but now just go to the gym. Thinking of taking up rockclimbing again (tho that's not a sport) or rowing... iLLusioN' Fri, 19th May '06, 4:22pm Barmy believe it or not counter-strike is seen as a sport by many.... www.caleague.com (http://www.caleague.com) ...www.gotfrag.com .... people earn a salary playing counter strike just like other proffesional athletes Blog Sat, 20th May '06, 10:06pm I play badminton, tennis, table tennis, frisbee. So basically, I don't play the sports that I watch the most (hockey, baseball) :p Shell Fri, 9th Jun '06, 10:14pm I play um...nothing But I watch some football and love watching watersports Enagonios Sat, 10th Jun '06, 10:24am Soccer. That's the only sport I watch and talk about too. Captain Jean-Luc Picard Mon, 12th Jun '06, 8:35am Rugby, wrestling, weight training, and gonna learn some ju-jitsu or judo for the hell of it i can play football (both kinds) and thats it Harbourboy Mon, 12th Jun '06, 2:40pm i can play football (both kinds) Hmm, 'both' kinds? There are at least six kinds that are sometimes discussed around here so you might need to be a bit more specific. Rallymama Mon, 12th Jun '06, 3:21pm Marcus had his first trike ride yesterday, and he didnt' fuss AT ALL about wearing his helmet! dmc Mon, 12th Jun '06, 5:47pm Played golf yesterday, then jogged a little over 3 miles, then biked about 5 miles (mostly uphill). Slept well. Harbourboy Mon, 12th Jun '06, 7:29pm Sounds like some sort of business class triathlon, dmc. Bion Mon, 12th Jun '06, 10:29pm Nope, didn't fit in the squash. Captain Jean-Luc Picard Tue, 13th Jun '06, 1:26am Hmm, 'both' kinds? There are at least six kinds that are sometimes discussed around here so you might need to be a bit more specific. sorry for my ignorance, but i thought only soccer and american football was called football Harbourboy Tue, 13th Jun '06, 1:37am No, these Boards are so multicultural that we have people who talk about: 1) Association Football (Soccer) 2) Rugby Union Football 3) Rugby League Football 4) Australian Rules Football 5) Gaelic Football 6) American Football (Gridiron) Captain Jean-Luc Picard Tue, 13th Jun '06, 1:41am hmm they call rugby football? canadians just call it rugby Harbourboy Tue, 13th Jun '06, 1:48am If you said "footie" in New Zealand, we would assume you were referring to rugby union. Drathir Darthirii Tue, 20th Jun '06, 9:00pm Netball, hockey, tennis, badminton, athletics and a tiny amount of football. Athletics primarily though. Gawain Tue, 20th Jun '06, 10:54pm I golf 2-3 times a week. I walk and carry my bag. Pac man Tue, 20th Jun '06, 11:12pm I played football in my younger years, made it to a youth selection of the local pro club, but i wasn't very serious in those years, so i kinda flushed my chances down the toilet. I had a very lively sexlife though, so i guess that makes up for the loss. :D All in all i played football for 12 years, i quit as an active player at the age of 21, because i couldn't combine it anymore with visiting my favourite club. I had to play a lot at the same time they kicked off at the stadium, and i hated missing a match of my hometown club. I also did some kickboxing for about a year. Nothing fancy, mostly training and a bit of sparring, i never played any official matches. Nowadays i do a lot of lifting, mostly cans and bottles. I can keep that up for an amazing long period of time without falling from my seat. :shake: Faraaz Tue, 27th Jun '06, 4:11pm Soccer and Basketball Slith Tue, 27th Jun '06, 4:32pm I run cross country, but I played soccer for a while when I was in middle school and elementary school. Stu Fri, 30th Jun '06, 11:13am Competitively I play: -Basketball (open A, school team) -Conoeing (school, captain and under 18 state champion (most points scored in under 18 races in the season - and I got a nice heavy cup for it)). I'm also a swimming instructor (as of the end of last year) and I played table tennis for a club a while back. TrueBlueAussie Fri, 30th Jun '06, 11:38am I used to play soccer competitively and AFL with a few of my friends but now I have laid back and have been sticking to golf (I have NOT become really lazy and hire carts out for every game, I still walk all of the 9 hole rounds and most of the 18 hole rounds) I used to like going for long swims when I'm out in the boat but I have stopped that with the reported increase in bull shark numbers in the bay. And paintball. Gotta love paintball Wiley One Wed, 30th Aug '06, 5:39pm I play both Association and American football as well as basketball, volleyball, ultimate frisbee and racketball. For exercise I do martial arts and running. Running = :( but it has to be done. Barmy Army Wed, 30th Aug '06, 10:36pm Ultimate frisbee? You've got to be having a laugh with that one surely. Harbourboy Wed, 30th Aug '06, 10:47pm "Ultimate Frisbee" is as kickass a name for a sport as "Snakes on a Plane" is for a movie. Saber Wed, 30th Aug '06, 11:07pm Ultimate frisbee? You've got to be having a laugh with that one surely.I wouldn't mock it. The only sport that runs more (besides the obvious Cross-country) is football (soccer). Frisbee is constant running untill someone scores, in which you get to walk back to your goal and then run again. It takes a lot of talent to through a frisbee accurately long distances with speed, especially in high wind. I play it, and I'm proud of it. Wiley One Wed, 30th Aug '06, 11:09pm I know it sounds like that BA. The game is not some extreme sport where people are doing super acts or putting their health in peril but then again I didn't name it. :) The game is a real blast to play though and a good work out if you have a fairly large field and not too many people. Like Saber says, the game rocks. Morgoroth Thu, 31st Aug '06, 11:15pm I can't believe I haven't answered this one yet. In any case I play tennis and badminton and do some running. The military has naturally seen quite a significant rise in fitness for me and I'll try to do my best keeping it up. |
