You're choices are interesting, but I'd swap out Schevshenko for Ibrahimovic or Larsson. As good as he is, Ukraine is not gonna get far in this tournament.

Also, I'd consider changing Lehmann in, Robinson out. Probably switch out Beckham too. Beckham probably won't perform at this cup, he never does, and Robintson. Well, there's plenty of goalies better than him in the cup, let's leave it at that.

Barmy Army
Sat, 3rd Jun '06, 10:04pm
Robinson is a very under-rated keeper. He rarely does anything wrong, is a terrific shot-stopper and instills confidence in a defence. Plus, England don't concede many goals, we never do really. It was a toss up between an Italian, German or English keeper.

And Beckham is an assist-machine. He's always been good at set-pieces, but lately for England he's been unbelievable. Whenever a ball goes into the box, it's so hard to defend and England have big guys this year. We'll get a lot of goals from corners/free kicks/crosses from his boot, I guarantee you.

Oh, and I'll rpboably swap Shevchenko after the group stage (if I remember).

Do 6you actually know how fantasy football works Rutkowski? :shake:

And, teek, all it is is that your players get points for assists/goals/tackles/saves depending on where they play. For the start, it's just for the group games. As soon as the group games are over you can re-pick your team, or make transfers. So you can pick Spainish players, then get rid if they don't get far.

Comprende? ;)

Also, I say we don't trade players anywhere, removes some of the fun. If you made picks, you stick with them.

If you say so, I was just reading the rules. We can do it whichever way you like (the actress said to the bishop!)

And teek, if I were you I'd swap Kahn for Buffon. Klinsmann has already said that Lehmann is his first choice keeper.

Play 3-4-3, Gaz. Defenders aren't going to get many points I reckon! I suppose it depends on what they are classing as a 'tackle'.

But I'd stick Zizou or Ronaldo in there anyway, in place or Fedorov or Silvestre.

Harbourboy
Sun, 4th Jun '06, 6:22pm
Isn't the World Cup all about defence, given how few goals get scored (except against the minor teams)?

Barmy Army
Sun, 4th Jun '06, 6:28pm
Not really, there's always plenty of goals. There should be this year anyway. But what you need to do is look at the scoring rules. Defenders lose a lot points for fouls, yellow cards and only gain 1 points for tackles. I can't see many defenders actually finishing in positive numbers. Mids and forwards will be the high scorers, because they only really lose points for cards, and gain a lot from assists and goals.

Fantasy football doesn't take much effort, especially as this game doesn't seem to allow loads of trades and doesn't have a rating system where certain players cost more than others (that's time consuming).

teekc
Mon, 5th Jun '06, 9:15pm
the title is fantasy football, so there might football fan who wouldn't come in just seeing the title. i was reluctant to read this too, initially, because fantasy sport is not my thingy afterall. But then i still went to the link and pick the players and so on and on and on.

Harbourboy
Mon, 5th Jun '06, 9:21pm
Good for you, teekc!

Actually, this version of fantasy soccer will be a bit tricky, given that you can have a different team for each day of the tournament. You'd have to be a micro-manager to win this one.

ok, let's talk about this.

we only have limited trading (changing players), so of course i want most of my players get into last 16. To get into last 16, they have to depend on their team and their group.

My biggest concern is U.S., italy, czech, you cannot know for sure who lose out. They all have good players, even U.S. Donovan and Keller are as good choice as other well known italians or Czechs, and they carry more weight than their Italian or Czech counterparts. i pick them i have to let go Italy or Czech .... And Italy is not 100% too.

Harbourboy
Tue, 6th Jun '06, 4:08am
Hang on, how many trades are you allowed at the end of the Group stage?

I found a Polish player called Giza (Geezer! :geezer: ) He's bound to be my star of the tournament.

3 or 4 after group stage, i think.

Now that i looked at it again...
Home team is always strong, this year is Germany's turn. After group stage, they face England or Sweden, after that they face Argentina, Portugal or Netherlands, after that Brazil .... ohhhh the choice i have to make.

Harbourboy
Tue, 6th Jun '06, 5:11am

look at the top players, all thay have are just 3 defenders and tons of forwards. Should have done that. player a 3 4 3, and sub fwd players everyday. Midfielders are not good for fantasy game, especially those hardworking ones like Gerrard.

Harbourboy
Tue, 13th Jun '06, 1:01am
3-4-3 is the only way to go, although your actual formation doesn't make much difference because only a handful of your players are active on any day. You could go with 1-1-2 because the other players aren't doing anything anyway.

HB, my team sucks, because I spent a lot of picks on those hard-working people. I also can't micromanage too much, as I'm in Germany, and there's not much time to check the net with regurality.

That, and my keeper choices suck.

Earl Grey

Harbourboy
Thu, 15th Jun '06, 7:30pm
Why do you have two teams, Earl Grey? Doubling your chances? Now I really wish we had an entrance fee pot.

Although I still have loser Polish and Dutch players who are doing nothing for me, as well as too many negative scoring players. So many yellow cards in this World Cup that sometimes the guys who don't aply are better than the ones that do.

Earl Grey
Thu, 15th Jun '06, 10:14pm
Doubling my chances? :)
No, just disregard the "Slow Food Lovers". Consider it a test run. Either way, "Cuddly Kittens" has missed the entire first "round" and won't stand a chance because of that.

... or will they?

teekc
Fri, 16th Jun '06, 12:42am
no, eriksson doesn't give him that much flexibility. He is the old defensive midfielder in England, not the "carry the weight of the team alone and strike a long range cannon to stage a miraculos come back" Gerrard of Liverpool.

oh.. and the name is bang bang bang bang, not just bang bang bang.

Earl Grey
Fri, 16th Jun '06, 7:18pm
Riquelme is the official Man of the Match in a 6-0 game and how many fantasy points does he get? -0.5, he's credited with one foul committed and that's it. Negative points!

The scoring system in this fantasy game is truly abysmal.

teekc
Sat, 17th Jun '06, 8:58am
well, if you well aware of the scoring system of this fantasy game, then you would know how to play by it.

when i set up my team initially, i pick the players i like or the hardworking players. It is later i realize, the problem is, hardwokring doesn't transfer to score in this system.

A few "keys" are missing from this scoring system. The easiest way to judge "involvement" of a player in a match is the pass and heading stats. This scoring system doesn't include this. It would be nice also if one can get extra score from the man of the match.

Earl Grey
Sat, 17th Jun '06, 11:21am
@teekc
Sure, I understood the scoring system when I created the Cuddly Kittens and I don't regret picking Riquelme as captain. He could just as well have ended up with several assists and shots on goal.
Sour grapes for him not getting any points. :)

My criticism stands though; the scoring system is weak and Riquelme being chosen Man of the Match and getting negative points highlights that.
You mention a few stats that could easily have improved the game were they included. I agree with you.
