View Full Version : Tell me your favourite Race and uses for it
Alienboy Wed, 9th Jan '02, 9:26pm Someone tell me the best(or favourite) races and why. Mine is Dragonic but hard to get without cheating:D.

Lord Sarevok Wed, 9th Jan '02, 9:56pm There is no "best" race. However, my favorite to play has to be Elves. The weapons bonuses and resistances are nice, as well as them being just fun to play.
Extremist Wed, 9th Jan '02, 11:42pm My favorite race?
Pal, I can't drive. So I don't race. And I don't watch races too.

zaknafein Thu, 10th Jan '02, 5:19am elves. oh and alien boy, do you have to post a million pointless topics at once??
Lukki Thu, 10th Jan '02, 7:06am Well.. I usually play human. Elves are better but they are so small. Only humans can be paladins..
Humans and elves.
Alienboy Thu, 10th Jan '02, 7:59am I like the half-elves myself.
1 Same stats as humans
2 Night vision and resistances
3 You can edit there appearance with ShadowKeeper. I made one look like a solar.(Well he is a Godling:))

TIN_MAN Thu, 10th Jan '02, 8:05am I always play humans.
Y? I don't know.
I love bg2 Thu, 10th Jan '02, 8:16am humans for duel classing, elves or half elves for multi classing or spell casters, half orc (i wish you could get pure orc) for any fighter type i'm not going to duel class, and halflings for rouges because of their thief boneses.
and also since this topic is about races is their anyone here that could make a hobbit and/or orc race:) i would but i dont know how. ;)
Alienboy Thu, 10th Jan '02, 8:26am Try using Shadow Keeper to get that pure orc of yours just change the race. I think your right in most cases, but why not ask for demonic rather than orc.
I love bg2 Thu, 10th Jan '02, 10:06am there's no hobbit race though, but if there was i think they would probably be a lot like halflings maby if someone did make it they could mix the race benifits like ummm... a elf or half orc that could duel class or somthing like that:)
and also what stas would an orc have?
Alienboy Thu, 10th Jan '02, 10:11am I haven't discovered yet the properties of orcs. Off topic, I have however read Lord of the Rings(finnished it this morning:D) and Hobbits are named as halflings in Gonder Legend. They are just named as Halflings in games I think because of copyright or something.
I love bg2 Thu, 10th Jan '02, 11:57am orcs would have 20 str,con and dex probably, judging by the half orc stats, and have you read all the lotr books or just the fellowship of the ring? if you read all of them did gandalf really die or was it some magic trick or something?
Master of Nuhn Thu, 10th Jan '02, 12:26pm IIRC, In LotR Hobbits seem to be exactly the same as Halflings, so there won't be no need to edit the game for a hobbit-race.
and yes, Gandalf died, I think he did because the book sais he was 'risen from the dead'
leave this issue to whatnots, oke?
Rhythm Thu, 10th Jan '02, 12:27pm Elves. Or anything else with the word elf in the name.
And I Love BG2, yes, Gandalf did die.
Edit: Sigh...

Ragusa Thu, 10th Jan '02, 12:40pm Depends on char - for roleplaying and race-bonus reasons: IMO the best fighter races are the dwarf (melee) the halfling (ranged fight), the best thief race is halfling, the best mage race gnomish, the best bow- and swordfighter race elven and the best allround races are human, half-elf and half-orc.
As for personal preferences: I like to play thiefs and cavaliers so halflings are my favourites.

Alienboy Thu, 10th Jan '02, 5:15pm First off I dont think half-orcs are really all-rounders. Second Gandalf didn't die he was saved by the eagles again.(again if you have read the hobbit.)Tolkien wouldn't throw away Gandalf so quick in the book bieng the most wise industructable character. Boromir dies however being not so indestructable.
Come on guys it's getting a bit off-topic. Sorry for spoiling LOTR.

Jack Funk Thu, 10th Jan '02, 5:38pm Halflings are great. High resistance, great thieving skills.
Yes, Gandalf "died" (in the battle with the Balrog) and came back as Gandalf the White (he was the Grey).
Ragusa Thu, 10th Jan '02, 5:50pm I was a little quick with calling the half-orc universal - however, from the non saving-throw-bonus and non-thieving-skill bonus races they are one of the most interesting since they in fact give great fighters, clerics, barbarians and thiefs (mighty backstabbers and swashbucklers especially).
Oh well
Alienboy Thu, 10th Jan '02, 5:53pm Gandalf is sorta off topic he not being a race! 51 posts yes! Anyway Gandalf is just a human isn't he.
bp Thu, 10th Jan '02, 6:25pm I tend to like :
- gnomes for mages and mage/thief
- half-elves for Bards
- dwarf for fighter/cleric
I only use a human if I plan to dual-class. Guess I'm not interested in half-orcs, since I usually play good-aligned parties.
Master of Nuhn Fri, 11th Jan '02, 3:41am Is there any race that gets bonus to their charisma or wisdom?
str -- HO
dex -- Elf/Halfling
Con -- HO/Dwarf
Int -- Gnome
Wis -- ?
Chr -- ?
Why doesn't get a human any bonuses to their charisma? They are respected all over Faerun, after all and are the only race that can become a paladin....
offtopic:
I thought Gandalf was some sort of godlike being, he was sent by the gods after all, just like Saruman. Or is this just nonsense?
It sounds silly to me...! :)
Alienboy Fri, 11th Jan '02, 3:44am Download templates at Sp downloads there is some extra races. Drow elves are meant to as well to charisma and dex. Not wisdom though. Wisdom is only gained through years, learning and downloading of the templates in Sp BG2 downloads.
My mistake Gandlf is a wizard and not part of the human species. Being sent from the Gods does not make you "Godlike" playing BG2 like I do does though.;)

Will Fri, 11th Jan '02, 4:08am Halflings are the best. They have great saving throws, they exude coolness in general and their only disadvantages are in strength and (i think) wisdom. The only really significant one of those is strength, and in SOA this can easily be rectified with the various strength enhancing toys available to stalwart adventurers. Plus, they're the only short race that can get it on with any of the four romantic partners. Thats got to be worth something :D
strange_machine Fri, 11th Jan '02, 4:31am in response to alienboy, Gandalf is not human he is a wizard. A wizard is a or considered seperate race or entity than humans in the LOTR series.
I love bg2 Fri, 11th Jan '02, 5:28am i'm sorry for bringing gandalf into the topic, thats about two suprises that i didint know about:(, *sigh* my fault for mentioning it i guess.
Alienboy Fri, 11th Jan '02, 5:52am Hehe It's all right dude.;)
mannedoc Fri, 11th Jan '02, 7:50am My god... Olórin death because a balrog?? Come one, an Istari can’t die so easily. If you like the movie, read the books, are far more enjoyable and you won’t be disappointed. And go beyond and understand tolkien’s world, the Silmarin, Unifnished tales, fields of beleriad, the hobbit… blalalalala. If you’re not willing to read the books, then just wait till the next movie to find out. He is not a human, is a Istari, probably a Maia or Valar of some sort.
For me a human for dual class. And for the romance an elf and half elf. Orcs was a race almost never played, until lately, and I think the make incredible fighters.
I love bg2 Fri, 11th Jan '02, 8:28am mannedoc: I am more then willing to read the books i want to finish the first one first and then i'll read the next two i havent benn reading it for long.
alien: whats your game spy name?
[You see that little letter icon at the top of every post? Use that for personal correspondence such as gamespy names rather than these boards - BTA]

Alienboy Fri, 11th Jan '02, 8:45am :)"Slayer of weakness" to be polite. I might get in trouble for being off-topic though. Im in trouble already i guess."idiot of the week, maybe":(
Sorry about my lack of intrest in Gandalf. He wasn't my favourite.Aragorn and hobbits are the real hero's.(well Gandalf too, but he had insane powers to help him.)
If people can't decide a favourite race, make one up. The topic is called new races/species.
[This message has been edited by Alienboy (edited January 12, 2002).]
Maldir Fri, 11th Jan '02, 10:09am I don't have a favourite race; when I start a game I think about the sort of character I'd like to play, then pick the race and profession to match. So far I've played a human, half-elf and elf.
As for Gandalf (spoiler if you don't know the book): he is Istari, one of the Maiar or minor angels sent to help the world. The Balrog is a fallen Maia, so would be perfectly capable of killing Gandalf. In the book he describes how he did defeat the Balrog, but it's pretty clear that his spirit was exhausted; in effect, he's as good as dead. But the Valar (higher angels) gave him new life to take on the role of Saruman, who of course has fallen. His description of being carried to Lorien by Gwaihir tells of his feeling of new life.
strange_machine Fri, 11th Jan '02, 3:39pm Xvart! they look like big headed smurfs and i love invading the Xvart village back in BG1 for sport killing. I just wish there was more xvarts in SoA!! I actually wish i can be a Xvart tooo :(
