View Full Version : Favorite 1st person shooter
Shralp Mon, 22nd Apr '02, 3:42pm The "Favourite Game" thread was too broad for me, and the responses too long for me to read through. Plus, it had the fatal flaw of misspelling "favorite."
I want to know what your two favorite 1st person shooter games for the PC are and why.
My favorite is Thief. I love perching and shooting, creeping about in the shadows, and being weaker than the guards who attack you. Real sense of strategy in the game. I didn't like the demonic element that entered into later levels, but it's still the best thing out there. Love the Dark Engine.
Second is Heretic/Hexen. All kinds of cool powers, plus you could fly. It was straight shooting except for having to find door keys here and there, but the graphics were good and the enemies weren't complete morons.
PowerPuff Mon, 22nd Apr '02, 4:33pm My favorites are Unreal and Quake 2. (Well, I haven't really played any 1st person shooters since Unreal was released, so I sort of feel like I've been living under a rock here...:o)
Unreal is nice because of the look-and-feel, and the 'story' in the game. I just love being ambushed by a bunch of Skaarj... Besides, I kinda feel like I'm out adventuring when running through the wilderness with a flak cannon :D
Quake 2: Multiplayer rocks, and it's just old enough that it runs smoothly on the computers currently available to me. Go rocket jumping on a rainy day... (I hated Quake 3; felt like I was running around in Legoland or something with the spinning health packs and all that)
Big B Mon, 22nd Apr '02, 4:48pm Jedi Knight and Mysteries of the Sith!!! All the way!
Shooters + the Force = ultimate FPS
I have yet to play Jedi Outcast but I'm sure it carries on the tradition.
There is nothing like speeding down a street in a spaceport, force jumping two stories, turning around, swiveling a concussion rifle or rail gun down, and shooting at those poor souls who were chasing after you.
I've been on low health and running through a narrow passage, counting my seconds, and whipped out my lightsaber, turned around, and sliced my startled pursuer in half. He thought he was going to get a cheap kill, little did he realize how unpredictable I am :p.
My four favorite powers are speed, jump, grip, and absorb. Sight is nice but after awhile, you don't need it, you can sense invisible enemies...
Favorite weapons are lightsaber and rail gun
Most hated weapon is any enhanced with rifle scope! I'm just jealous because I can't use the scope good. But those who can... oh man!
It's the only FPS I've put up with. All others I find too bland.
(Just to make it clear I am raving about the MP part. The SP is good, but the MP is what shines.)

Sniper Mon, 22nd Apr '02, 5:32pm Hmm... I'd say Operation Flashpoint - i just find the whole traversing an entire island a kewl thing!
And er ... Counter-strike? That is one bad ass game!
Mollusken Mon, 22nd Apr '02, 6:36pm Might and Magic VI and VII ;)
Other than that I've played Counterstrike a lot. Got some fairly good Quake III skills, but I usually don't like FPSes that much.
Sapiryl Mon, 22nd Apr '02, 6:43pm Jedi Outcast is the best FPS out there!
It starts out a little rocky with endless storm troopers and jumping puzzles, but quickly evolves into a fabulous force wielder game.
EVERY body movement leads to a different lightsaber swing, and there are different lightsaber fighting styles. For instance, move backward and "swing", and you'll pull a Darth Maul when he's fighting Qui Gon. Good stuff!
Big B Mon, 22nd Apr '02, 8:42pm I don't know about you Sapiryl, but I like a lot of stormtroopers :).
I remember my glee back in the day when I was playing Dark Forces (the grandfather of Jedi Outcast ;)) and on the 4th mission I crept on a ledge only to find a unit of unsuspecting stormtroopers in formation below me. It immediately became apparent what I was to do. A clink clink clink and a BOOM later, and my thermal detanator took them all out.
Hmmm I think though that this new game called Bounty Hunter that will be coming out is going to be as good as Jedi Outcast if not better. Thank you Lucas for Jango and Boba Fett. Send in the clones baby!

Will Mon, 22nd Apr '02, 11:53pm Timesplitters, and the original Unreal. Roll on Timesplitters 2...
*EDIT* Crap; sorry, missed the PC bit. I guess I liked Duke Nukem 3D when it came out. Then again, I was about 13...

Llandon Tue, 23rd Apr '02, 12:40am I just finished Allied Assult: Medal of Honor.....GREAT GAME!
total Tue, 23rd Apr '02, 5:50am I dont like FPS very much but last FPS i got hooked and finished it was Serious Sam and the second place (but first in multiplayer) goes to Counterstrike (well yes it doesnt have single plkayer, but playing with the BOTs is near).
I must also mention FPS that i finished several times a long time ago: Doom 1 (any nostalgic guys (girls) out there?)
And the best FPS Demo Award goes to: darn, cant remember the title, it was first Star Wars FPS, Dark Forces? I played that first level at least 100 times, but never liked the whole game, finished it though.
Volar Blackmane Tue, 23rd Apr '02, 3:57pm I just hate them all. Running around and waving your mouse at targets that'll shoot you to pieces in seconds unless you're a good player (at least in multiplayer). Rocketjumps *groan*. Medikits that'll boost you to full health just by running over them in a firefight. People that take two or three rockets in their chests without even slowing down. Jumping all the time so you're harder to hit. *mutters on and off about everything in the silly games, even about the features*
Jack Funk Tue, 23rd Apr '02, 6:42pm Ultima Underworld.
eveningdrive Tue, 23rd Apr '02, 10:01pm Counterstrike in a network gaming cafe. 16 on 16 in de_dust 2.
I'm consistently beaten by 11 year olds, but its more fun than playing against bots. :borg:
SlimShogun Thu, 25th Apr '02, 3:03am How can we forget the king? HALF-LIFE redefined the ENTIRE FPS GENRE. Still a great game years later. 2nd place: DEUS EX! How can you talk about FPS without mentioning it? Unless you count it as an RPG, that is. I suggest the purchasing of this game to EACH and every person on these boards. It is a fabulous game with shooter, RPG, and action elements, and an incredibly deep, (kinda) non-linear story. And it doesn't require a mega-PC to run it well! The weapons are great and can be modified, as well as the player's skills as the game progresses. Any questions? Just post them or contact me, I want to convince as many people as possible to try it. C'mon Extremist, BTA, Tal, there has to be a hidden shooter inside you!

Lazy Bonzo Thu, 25th Apr '02, 8:28pm My favourite single player is Unreal Tournament for it's shere number of options and mutators. It is also the only FPS that i ever bothered to finish. I haven't played much multi-player of it but that which i did play was great [ok i got my ass kicked, splaated and shot but it was still good]
My second favourite is Quake 2 for the multi-player fun i had with my friend over a serial cable for about a year. He was amazingly skillfull and for the first 20 games i never even hit him. But when i did it was the greatest thing ever. The best game of it i ever played was against my mate [the one i already mentioned above] He had the better computer and i had the old one with no speakers. This meant that i could tell how close i was to him by how loud my shots were heard on his speakers. It was quite possibly the most tactical battle i ever had. I also love Quoole [the Quake 2 editor] for it's verstility and being able to make exploding people.
Frog Fri, 26th Apr '02, 5:16am Tribes TAC (Team Aerial Combat)
There's nothing like it:
Your apc just crashed, your flag is not the base and your jet pack is running on fumes. Hit the suicide key and go play nintendo. This game is too much for ya.
The Dreadmaster Fri, 26th Apr '02, 12:40pm Deus Ex rules!! Has anyone played it?!
Trias Fri, 26th Apr '02, 1:55pm Soldier of Fortune,since i'm rather sadistic:evil::evil::evil:
Wildfire Fri, 26th Apr '02, 5:26pm Jedi Outcast :) - The single player is great - A bit short, but a great plot, and amazing gameplay. And the multiplayer aspect of it is great fun.
Unreal Tournament - Purely for the sheer number of hours that I have wasted in front of this game - which must be more than any other game I've played. Generally, I play the Unreal Fortress mod for it, but occasionally play the normal game.
[This message has been edited by Wildfire (edited April 26, 2002).]
Lazy Bonzo Fri, 26th Apr '02, 7:11pm Dreadmaster: I've tried to play Deus Ex and thought it was great except for some reason when i try to play it on my computer it just crashes too often for me to get into it.
The Dreadmaster Sat, 27th Apr '02, 10:37am Ack, my name would have been Deathmage had I not felt weird that day I registered. Deus Ex is a GREAT game!! Too bad you can't play it...(Feels sad for you  )

Thorin Sat, 27th Apr '02, 3:48pm Best First person shooter that is simple Half-life and all its mods and addons. the game is simply the best.
Wildfire Sat, 27th Apr '02, 5:30pm The Dreadmaster: http://www.sorcerers.net/cgi-bin/ubbUserName.cgi
Enjoy :)
Namuras Sat, 27th Apr '02, 5:54pm Wheel of Time, for having a generally fantastic feel, although the controls can be quite difficult to master. One of only two FPS games I've finished (the other was Drakan).
Day of Defeat, for just being a plain fun multiplayer game.
The rest are rather mediocre, I think.
Lazy Bonzo Sat, 27th Apr '02, 9:10pm Namuras: How does drakan count as a FPS ?since the only time you are in FPS is when your using the bow. The rest of the time your in 3rd person. On a side note were youu rather dissapointed by the ending as both my friend and i who finished it were.
Namuras Sat, 27th Apr '02, 10:19pm Yeah, sorry, my bad.
And, I was rather disappointed in the entire story. Very silly. Yet, it didn't matter since my brother bought the game, not me...

Turandil Sat, 27th Apr '02, 10:48pm Moa:aa
Deathmage Sun, 28th Apr '02, 9:35am Woohoo! Thanks Wildfire!! *is very happy*
Lazy Bonzo Sun, 28th Apr '02, 6:11pm Moa:aa
Turandil: did you actually have anything constructive to say? or is the most construcive thing you can say as to your favourite first person shooter "Moa:aa"? Keep the meaningless comments such as "Moa:aa" to the Post for meaningless babbling... - http://www.sorcerers.net/ubb/Forum7/HTML/001715.html

Wildfire Sun, 28th Apr '02, 7:05pm He might have meant Medel of Honour: Allied Assault, badly misspelling honour.. ;)
theholygit Sun, 28th Apr '02, 7:16pm DEUS EX BABY !!!! Nowt beats it. It's just brilliant. story line, playability. just priceless.
My second is probably system shock 2, even though i haven't managed it all the way through yet. I mean any game that manages to scare me half to death in the first five minutes is definately worth my time. But downer is i get half the way through it and i don't know what to do. very confusing.
SlimShogun Sun, 28th Apr '02, 7:48pm I retract my former post and concur with theholygit. Deus Ex is by far my favorite, with System Shock 2 coming in as my second favorite.
Message to theholygit: Ask me questions if you need help with SS2. I've beaten it and can provide you with tips, etc.

Voltric Mon, 29th Apr '02, 2:22am No One Lives Forever. It has a great plot, a good use of the LethTech engine, it's funny and the dialogue is the best. All and all the best FPS since Half-Life
Z-Layrex Tue, 7th May '02, 2:37pm Rtcw
Headbanger Wed, 8th May '02, 1:01pm DOn't play 1st person shooters often.... .Quake 3 still rules..... Fast and deadly.
Orkrist the Cleaver Mon, 20th May '02, 1:43am Jedi Outcast (2), Return to Wolfenstien, Serious Sam, System Shock 2, HALO, Unreal and Red Faction on the PS2 round out my top spots, but not necessarily in that order.
Hat's off to Soldier of Fortune, but the music became a little too severe after a while.
Deus Ex is awesome, but admittedly complex.
I really want to get my hands on Operation Flashpoint and Operation IGI, but haven't as of yet. Same for Voyager Elite Force.
I also want to play the Dark Forces series in reverse since I started with Jedi Outcast, and I remember seeing DF back in the day and being wowed by it.
I have to give a lot of credit to the Descent series, too. I condiser them FPS, close enough.
Forashi Thu, 23rd May '02, 1:10pm Damn, tough one. I can't say just 1 or 2 so I'll go with
*Tribes 1 -it's got longevity and the skilled really come out in this one, TAC is cool 2 only too many second-rate players there
*Jedi Outcast -multiplay sucks but single.. ahh just love to be close to the force
*Deux Ex -either incredible luck or mad skillz, this rocks
*Aliens vs. Preds II -nice vibes, all was as it should be.. been a long time since I last was that scared
All in this order.
[This message has been edited by Forashi (edited May 23, 2002).]
AMaster Mon, 27th May '02, 6:04am Aliens vs Predator 2: both great single and multiplayer. Marine campaign actually managed to make me tense, unlike system shock or any of the other supposedly scary games. Pred campaign is just plain fun: nothing like sneaking up on people and decapitating them. Alien is fun for a while, but there is no variety.
multiplayer is awesome in every mode except straight deathmatch...but noone plays DM so it doesn't matter. spawn camping can be a problem on certain servers, however
oh, and Orkrist: be sure to try operation Flashpoint before you buy it. It can be EXTREMELY difficult. 40 minute missions in which you can save ONCE. *shudders* there are ways around that, but still...
Christopher_Lee Mon, 27th May '02, 3:17pm half life familly games - inculding Counter Strike, which is fantastic multiplayer...
Ragusa Mon, 27th May '02, 11:21pm The all classic UT, quickly followed by Alien vs. Predator and Medal of Honour. C&C Renegade is pretty funny too, Major Havoc rules.
TriLleX The Slayer Tue, 28th May '02, 9:54pm I'm proud to say that I enjoyed nearly every FPS i bought. (Quake1, Quake2, Quake3, Jedi Knight 1 & 2, MOH - AA and so on) But I really love Quake1. For it's crappy graphic and it's high gameplay. Anyone tried it in Multiplayer ?
Vukodlak Wed, 29th May '02, 12:49pm Outlaws - a brilliant and unappriciated western FPS. The music is the best I've ever heard in a FPS.
Lazy Bonzo Wed, 29th May '02, 7:18pm OMG outlaws!!!??? I played a demo of that and it has got to have been one of the only demos that i have finished without having fun in, ever. I mean there's no skill in it it's got an option to make you invulnerable. The AI is shocking and the weapons have no originality at all. Therefore i conculde that IMHO outlaws was a big pile of crap :flaming::mad:
Vukodlak Wed, 29th May '02, 11:00pm it's got an option to make you invulnerable
Come again?
Anyway, I realise it's not a game for your usual FPS crowd. I was (and still am) quite weary of rocket launchers, plasma rifles, flame throwers..bla, bla...
It was refreshing to find a game which had more normal weapons. In all other FPSs one of the first weapons is a pistol/colt/handgun which you discard as soon as you get the next weapon. In this game all the weapons are useful at some point, but your six-shooter is a friend from the first moment to the last. Apart from that, the main strenghts are the music and the atmosphere - I felt as though I was in a Sergio Leone film.
Lazy Bonzo Thu, 30th May '02, 6:28pm Well in the demo i played you could go to options and tick an invulnerability box. No challenge.
AMaster Fri, 31st May '02, 5:47am of course there's no challenge if you tick it...which begs the question: WHY did you tick it?
Lazy Bonzo Fri, 31st May '02, 7:49pm I didn't tick it until after i'd played through the demo already. And it made it worse. My point is what is the point of leaving it in, i'd undestand if it was just a type in cheat or in a debug mode but it really shouldn't ship with one IMO. As for the weapons hmmm i like getting bigger and badder weapons to defeat bigger and badder enemies. Maybe it's just me and my opinion.
Invoker Fri, 7th Jun '02, 1:13am Bwahaha LOL! Sorry had to get that out of my system :D
Err, yeah I think it wasn't a bad game at all. I liked its atmosphere as well. I love westerns where you get to gunsling. It got a bit repetitive as I recall though. There were some weird things though like you could see aliens abducting cows and such :) (easter eggs)
My fav. would be quake 1 as well. That was one of the first fps with good graphics that I've played (after the doom series) and none after that could get me as jumpy in front of that monitor.
Maybe I should try that alien vs. predator thing :)
TheBlackRose Fri, 7th Jun '02, 3:40am My fave FPS is Half-Life. Nothing beats the multiplayer fragfests with that beauty..
DinoTiggy1 Wed, 12th Jun '02, 7:18pm Medal of Honor: Allied assult, is a great game. I don't play that much FPS, but I do like Thief, and MoH: AA
Padine the Paladin Thu, 27th Jun '02, 5:03pm Quake three:arene and thief!!!
Sir Dargorn Mon, 1st Jul '02, 6:36pm Half Life will never and can never be beaten. it creates an atmosphere that nothing else can.
And since when has theif been a bloody fps?
Uytuun Tue, 2nd Jul '02, 5:26pm Return to castle wolfenstein and of course Half-Life
wylo Wed, 3rd Jul '02, 2:30am Definately Deus Ex. I also like jedi outcast and serious sam: second encounter.
Teensabre Thu, 4th Jul '02, 12:01pm Star Wars - Obi Wan's Adventures...probably because I have a crush on him.:love::love:
SleepleSS Sun, 14th Jul '02, 8:21pm I Realy love the first Doom!
zaknafein Wed, 17th Jul '02, 7:58am I feel left out, I don't play FPS on PC.:wail: The only one I've realy liked though was Perfect Dark on N64. Except for Quake Arena with I played multiplayer at my friends house.
Slackertoast Wed, 17th Jul '02, 8:23am I have no first person shooter favorites. I am one of those few people who get physically ill  when I attempt to play those games. Poor Me. I am missing out on a whole genre of games. :sosad:
void Tue, 23rd Jul '02, 8:47am Mine have got to be Jedi Knight (though I disliked MOTS) and Jedi 2, both great fun ;) .
Abyssal Knight Wed, 24th Jul '02, 5:40am Got to love the old Wolfenstein game. Simple yet challenging. I also liked Return of the Castle, but the old one still gets my vote.
ejsmith Wed, 24th Jul '02, 2:54pm I'm partial to the Unreal Tournament engine. Which would include Deus Ex. HalfLife is good too. I really don't care for the Quake3 engine; everything looks like it's a picture taken with a glossy filter.
Sirdan Wed, 24th Jul '02, 9:14pm Half-Life
Unreal Tournament
but I don't play a lot 1st person shooters
[This message has been edited by Sirdan (edited July 24, 2002).]
Fritz Thu, 25th Jul '02, 9:06pm Deus Ex
Half Life
Unreal Tournament
Max Payne
Enthasius Fri, 26th Jul '02, 5:28pm Some of you might not think its a FPS, but Jediknight II, and..... its gotta be serious sam.
Basil Warbone Thu, 1st Aug '02, 1:12am Outlaws:The concept was awsome  but suffered from some graphics prolems and I coulda used a walkthrough.loved the weapons.I would like to see a remake.
Doom & Doom2:simply Clasic
Heretic:Kinda old but was ahead of it's time in my opinion.
Unreal:Killer Atmosphere.
Thief:Novel weapons,good Atmosphere.
I also enjoyed Quake series, Hexen series, and Half-life.
Hell,I luv em all :D
Z-Layrex Thu, 1st Aug '02, 4:47pm MOH: Frontline on the PS2 is the new king of FPS. No FPS comes close to the quality of this game, not even Halo or Red Faction.
Methylviolet Fri, 2nd Aug '02, 7:10am I'm with Slackertoast -- at least I'm not alone in this.
The porn actress Asia Carrera is outspoken in her praise of Unreal -- you can download skins of her body on her website -- so I tried it. Yikes. It was so stressful that I couldn't believe it was supposed to be fun.
Flame me if you want, but furthermore I think FPS are bad for people. My son's friends think I'm super cool because I play PC games -- but I won't let the boy play FPS. His pal has GTA 3 but I cannot see providing that game as grist for his intellectual mill.
Aikanaro Fri, 2nd Aug '02, 11:07am I'm against you on that one Methyviolet. I'm not a great fan of FPS myself but they aren't harmful at all. How could a bunch of pixels warp someones brain unless it was already warped anyhow? FPS just make a good scapegoat for a lot of the worlds problems.
Fallen Paladin Sat, 3rd Aug '02, 1:40am Deus Ex all the way !!!
That story kept me up all night.
