There is a small symbol of a mask beside the find traps button. To disarm a trap or unlock a chest. Press that and then on the discovered trap/chest. You get good experince for this.

yes the theif can pick locks and disarm traps as well as pick pockets (click on the thing that looks like a pair of eyes or something, and you can also hide in shadows and then backstab from behind which add's your backstab multiplier of X3 to begin with up to X5 (X7 for an assasin). you can also duel class them if human and multi class if your any other race as long as it's a valid dc or mc. and halfling are a good class if you want a straight thief.
by the way dont feel to bad if you suck at bg2 i knew absolutly nothing about the game to begin with but i'm doing ok now

Or you could try the tutorial.

Hey hey hey... detecting traps in a dungeon crawl is easy. All you have to do is customize your rogue script to thief adventurer and while he is adventuring he will continue to detect traps. It's a good script! Saves one the hassle to detect it manually plus it's good in the later stages when dungeons are riddle with traps. Good stuff!

Yeah, I use the rogue script for my Monk so he's always detecting traps.
There is a small problem in melee though - if he's not being attacked he just stands there detecting traps while everyone else is fighting. I have to watch him closely to make sure he keeps slashing away.
Be warned.
