View Full Version : New Forums?
Yulaw9460 Fri, 21st Mar '08, 8:22am What new (or old) RPGīs could we expect to see forums for in the future? After all, Iīm starting to think about this site as the place to go to get the best advice and info about the games I usually play, like Baldurīs Gate and so on. But I get a bit down when I need some advice about RPGīs like, say, KOTOR or Fallout or whatever, and see that I have to look elsewhere. The official or semi official forums for those games donīt really appeal to me. Donīt know why. And some games would seem almost mandatory to have a forum for here, given their genre. Am I just whining too much?:p
Trellheim Fri, 21st Mar '08, 1:18pm It would be nice if we could have a same kind of forum for Fallout as we have for the Elder Scrolls serie. But I'm really not sure if there are any new games worth talking about.
(Actually, that contradicts what I just said, since F3 is coming out)
BTW: Why do games like Dragonshard and Demon Stone have their own forums? They get like two posts per year about why no one's playing them.
The Magister Fri, 21st Mar '08, 2:34pm I hate to say it but if there is a RPG there is usually a forum for it somewhere. Even mods have their own forums.
Splunge Fri, 21st Mar '08, 4:54pm Chances are, if you have a question about one of the games that doesn't have it's own forum, you could make a post in one of the General Gaming Forum sections and you would probably get a response.
As to some of the other forums without many posts - yeah, it would be nice if they could be consolidated into one overall forum so that they don't clutter up the main Board page. Not a big deal though, since there's not too many of them.

I guess. But as Trellheim pointed out, it seems a bit odd that games, who like 2-3 people in here play, have their own forum, while at the same time games who are a lot more popular donīt have one. Like Fallout or KOTOR, who would certainly qualify as RPGīs IMO. (and good ones, too.)
Taluntain Fri, 21st Mar '08, 6:34pm Dragonshard and FRDS got their own forum same as any other D&D game. Of course, their utter lack of popularity couldn't really be predicted that much in advance. And yes, I'll be putting all the unpopular games' forums into one so that we got some more space shortly.
As for forums for the other games mentioned (Fallout, KotOR, etc.), it all depends on their popularity and the amount of discussion on them here. Usually separate forums for any game get made once the amount of discussions about them in the Dragons Not Required or The Playground forums is high enough to warrant it. It's not like there's no place to discuss those games - the above-mentioned forums are where all the discussions about them so far are kept.
So, if you want to speed up the process of getting a separate forum for any game here, open and participate in discussion threads about it. If I see that the interest is there, I'll certainly open new forums for them and we'll move the existing threads from DNR there.
Yulaw9460 Fri, 21st Mar '08, 7:57pm Speed it up how? Resurrect all of the threads with comments about a game like KOTOR? I tried a search on Demon Stone. 12 posts. KOTOR scored 500 hits, which I guess is the max. amounts of posts displayed in a search, right? If thatīs a correct assumption, there could be a lot more posts about it here. Fallout did almost as good. That should be an indicator on the popularity of these games, IMO.
Itīs not that Iīm blaiming you or *****ing at you or anything, Tal. Iīm just pointing out that this puzzles me a bit. Games who should almost have their own forum by default are not represented. Iīm just wondering about it, seeing that Iīve been getting nothing more than supreme and more-than-qualified advice in regards to the other games here, like BG and IWD etc. I just have a feeling that there are games where other people on this board could prove to be a great resource, and they may not be getting the chance to pass along that knowledge. I mean, guys like Dan Simpson has written a superb walkthrough for KOTOR2, but I had to search a bit to dig it up.
Besides that, has there ever been any doubt about the popularity of a game like Fallout? Fallout vs. say, Demon Stone is a dead give away, or am I wrong?
Taluntain Sat, 22nd Mar '08, 12:30am Just typing "fallout" or "kotor" into the search field will just show you how often those games were mentioned in threads, not that the threads were specifically dedicated to either game. Start NEW threads dedicated to those games, you don't need to resurrect old ones. There are a significant number of games that could have their own forums in addition to Fallout and KotOR too, but making 20 new forums for games that wouldn't be discussed much wouldn't make much sense.
And you can't really compare FRDS and Fallout as they're practically two extremes. You're forgetting that Sorcerer's Place started off as a site with (A)D&D game coverage only. The Elder Scrolls forum was added a few years ago because there was demand for it. My reluctance to open it earlier was simply due to the fact that the series wasn't covered in our news or on the site as a whole. It would have to be the same with Fallout or any other non-D&D game except Dragon Age at this point (forum coverage only).
But since that doesn't seem to have bothered anyone with TES much, I guess it's not really much of an inhibition to setting up a forum. Deciding which games to pick is more of an issue. By all accounts, Fallout should have a forum... and KotOR... then all of Blizzard's games (perhaps a joint forum) and the list can go on.
I'd like to hear from as many people as possible what they think about this and whether they like the idea or not.
Taluntain Wed, 26th Mar '08, 2:10am What, all silent now?
Aikanaro Fri, 28th Mar '08, 2:50am As much as I like Fallout (and KotOR, for that matter), I don't think this is the place for forums on them.
For Fallout: The Fallout series is old, and everything that's to discuss about it has pretty well already been discussed. Also, SP is more fantasy-orientated, so it doesn't really fit into the theme.
Fallout 3 shouldn't get a forum because a) it's not fantasy, and b) because it's not an RPG.
KotOR is much the same - nothing new is happening with it and it doesn't fit the theme.
Of course, with the rate of release for D&D RPGs, SP is going to dry up if it doesn't find some new games to cover. Honestly though, there isn't all that much of interest being released - well, there's a few indie games that are looking good, but otherwise not much.
The Broken Hourglass probably should get its own forum at least though, seeing that it's being covered. Age of Decadence it another possibility, though not quite as neat a fit as TBH.
Ziad Sat, 29th Mar '08, 7:50pm I agree with Broken Hourglass getting its own forum. Makes sense, as it's supposed to be "in the spirit of BG", it's made by a number of previous BG/IE modders, and it's already extensively covered in the news section.
I would have said yes, go for a Kotor or Fallout forum, but Aikanaro has a point. Very few new threads show up concerning either series, and while this may change with the release of Fallout 3 or with the potential announcement of a new Kotor game, I'm not sure it's entirely justified until then. There are so very few posts about Fallout 3 now that I'm not even sure there will be much of an increase after the game's release.
Taluntain Sat, 29th Mar '08, 7:55pm TBH will get its own forum, that is for certain. It only doesn't have one now because there's still no set release date and not much interest in discussing it.
Yulaw9460 Sun, 30th Mar '08, 4:37pm Well then, Iīd better get to asking questions about KOTOR then.
