View Full Version : Question about autosave.
Amdis Tue, 10th Jun '08, 11:02am I first wanted to ask this in the Infinity Engine forums but this isn't a modding question so i will ask here. :)
Second..i do not know if more of you have this, but i noticed that the autosaves can become corrupt and do not load or let themselfs be deleted ingame. It doesn't happen with every auto save, but it does happen with let's say 4 or 5 out of ten times. When it happens i have to exit the game because it doesn't allow itself to be deleted ingame...well actualy the auto savegames exits the game for me to be precise. :D
And since you can use quick save(Although do make a hard save after any major improvement during the game. :) ) i actualy do not see the use for autosave. So my question is this...is there away to deactivate the autosave?
Silverstar Tue, 10th Jun '08, 11:30am Now that is something. I have never experienced or heard about corrupt auto-save games before! Which mods do you have, or are you patched?
Decados Tue, 10th Jun '08, 12:07pm That certainly is odd. I've never heard of that before either. Can't say I know of a way to prevent the game from auto-saving, but why would you want to? It shouldn't make much difference to you if the game is auto-saving and the save file is hardly memory-greedy.
8people Tue, 10th Jun '08, 12:15pm Autosaves are more likely to corrupt than a normal save because when you go through the menu there isn't anything you can really do to interrupt it saving. Autosaves and Quicksaves only have a higher chance because the user might keep trying to do things while it's trying to save or a timer or script may be trying to run.
I've only had one corrupted quick save before, and that was because I hit the wrong button and an area transition simultaneously
If the problem with Autosaves only occurs on loading for you, it shouldn't be much of a problem to simply ignore the top save in the game ;) you may want to list out what mods you have and explore their forums to see what problems and conflicts are reported for them. Check your patches are up to date as well, mods without the right patches installed forst are not usually pretty :shake:

That certainly is odd. I've never heard of that before either. Can't say I know of a way to prevent the game from auto-saving, but why would you want to? It shouldn't make much difference to you if the game is auto-saving and the save file is hardly memory-greedy.
Decados, it is not because of memory or something. I just think of it as odd that it happens and i wanted to see if more people have experienced it. And if so if there was a way to deactived it so i wouldn't have to bother about the autosaves any more.
If the problem with Autosaves only occurs on loading for you, it shouldn't be much of a problem to simply ignore the top save in the game you may want to list out what mods you have and explore their forums to see what problems and conflicts are reported for them. Check your patches are up to date as well, mods without the right patches installed forst are not usually pretty
8people, it usualy only happens when i want to load the autosave, but at times it also happens when i want to delete the autosave. It then just pops-up a message and then exits to my desktop. Like i wrote in my first post, it doesn't happen every time but around 4 0r 5 times out of 10. And so far it also only happens to the autosaves, the quick saves and normal saves are fine. It is just something i am curious about.
As for patches...after having installed SoA i installed the latest patch for it, and then installed ToB, after that i installed the latest patch for ToB. Only after that i installed the mods i am using. The only thing not in the Weidu log is the BG2: GUI SKIN MOD V1.5, simply because it isn't weidu and only changes the look of the inventory..menus and such. It's this one;

Splunge Tue, 10th Jun '08, 3:45pm after having installed SoA i installed the latest patch for it, and then installed ToB, after that i installed the latest patch for ToB.
I'm not entirely sure of this, but I think that, if you're installing TOB, you shouldn't be installing the SOA patch. But even if that's true, I don't know if installing the SOA patch would cause any problems. (I kind of doubt it.)
Anyway, like the others, I've never had the problem you describe.
Decados Tue, 10th Jun '08, 3:54pm As far as I am aware, if you are playing with ToB, only the ToB patch should be installed. However, like Splunge, I'm not sure why an official patch would cause Autosave problems. Still, it is the only thing you've done out of the ordinary, so it gets the most suspicion.
Amdis Tue, 10th Jun '08, 4:11pm I agree that it is weird to do so, and to be honest after i hat done so i to thought..why did i do that, because more then likely ToB will contain the improvements aswell that where in the latest SoA patch. Oh well i guess it would be pretty weird if the official patch would cause this indeed, weird but perhaps not impossible.
Any way if the autosave can not be turned of then i guess i will have to live with the fact it will happen again. I am way to far in my game to say that i will reinstall the game just for that. I will just have to make sure to use normal saves and quick saves and not the auto saves when reloading. *sigh*
EDIT: Ok i made a screenshot of the message box i get when the above problem occurs, maybe that way someone might recognize what could be causing this. It seems to be the same message everytime it happens.

Shaitan Wed, 11th Jun '08, 9:32pm I remember this problem from way back in older days :) I never managed to do anything about it, but remember to do a lot of saves yourself should get you through. I haven't seen this bug for at least 3 years now.
Amdis Wed, 11th Jun '08, 9:42pm Well this may sound weird, but that is good to hear. It means that it is an old problem, and not one that i just discovered. It is not good that there isn't a fix for it, but oh well. Guess i will have to become a paranoid saver then. :D
