*** New Arcade Feature ***

Tournaments (http://www.sorcerers.net/forums/arcade.php?&do=viewtournaments) are now open for creation to all registered users.

A tournament is a mini-competition between a specified number of board members (2, 4 or 8) in any game in our arcade with a specified number of possible replays for each contestant (1-5 tries). Tournaments are public, can be created by anyone and also played by anyone, which means that whoever fills the open tournament slots first gets to play.

All tournament notices (match start/end, progression, elimination, disqualification, etc.) get sent via e-mail to all participants so make sure that you have a valid and working e-mail listed in your profile, otherwise the notices will not reach you!

Tournaments keep separate scores from the global high scores, which means that your tournament result will only be as good as your allotted tournament plays are.

Tournaments work by (random) pair elimination, which means that ladder progression favours the winners of each pair's match until only a single tournament winner remains. If you don't play in a tournament you've signed up for, you will be disqualified after a certain amount of time and someone else will be able to play in your stead.

BEFORE CREATING A NEW TOURNAMENT IN ANY GAME, CHECK THIS PAGE (http://www.sorcerers.net/forums/arcade.php?&do=viewtournaments) TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE ARE NO ONGOING TOURNAMENTS IN THE SAME GAME WITH OPEN SLOTS LEFT. We wouldn't want to have 3 tournaments in the same game open but not enough players to fill the open slots!

Tournament winners get the number of tournaments won shown below their avatars/portraits in every post.

This should cover the basics, but if there are any questions or comments about the tournaments, post them all here.

Oh, and good luck! ;)

To try this out, I created a bowling tournament for 8 players. Considering I average 5 or more 7-10 splits a game, this should be most frustrating. Anyone who wants to should sign up.

I'm in... we need 4 more.

Yeah, that Ten Pin Bowling took me a while to be able to predict where the ball was going to go. It's still a little weird, and I have trouble picking up spares with the 7 or 10 (and I've never gotten both :) )

If there are spots available tonight, I'll give it a go... three chances per round too... Lots of opportunity for frustration :)

I'm in. As clueless as I may be in bowling. :p

This was a nice surprise to come back to after kinda forgetting about the BoM for a while. (shame on me!)

I'm in :)

Hoo hoo! Look out Tal; you've got a decent score to beat :)

Jeez BTA, looks like you figured out how to roll strikes on this game and avoid 7-10 splits. Nice score.

Blackthorne TA

Very rarely get strikes. But I pick up most spares...

Noooo! Beaten!

Good luck dmc, I hope you make sure I get beaten by the best.

Going against the King of the Arcade I can but bow. :shake:

Jhonka - i am going to need a mega-dose of luck to beat BTA. Even though I have started to figure out how to make spares, I still manage to have two to three 7-10 splits each game. That really kills a mark, let me tell you . . .

Im finally getting the hang of the bowling -- watch out BTA, I may stand a chance against you.

Something happened to my last try. Must've hit some wrong key as I started and it exited then said I already played. Oh well. Looks like you took it dmc! :)

Thanks, BTA. Hate to win something on a miss like that though. I suppose you can console yourself with 9 high scores. ;)

To emphasize again, ANYONE can start a new tournament in any game, and it's very easy. So folks, go start some new tournaments, don't wait for us to do it for you!

When someone starts a new tournament, post about it here so that people know about it. I haven't noticed that a Gold Miner tournament is open until now...

Come on people, we need 2 more so that the tournament can begin! Join now (http://www.sorcerers.net/forums/arcade.php?&do=viewtourney&tid=3)!

Edit: Gah, it's paired me with Aldeth... :shake:

I think I know why no one joined for a while until after I did.

Somehow everyone knew that the next person to sign up for the tournament would be paired with Blackthorne.

Lucky me...

Actually, I thought that when I signed up... didn't notice Aldeth there... :shake:

I didn't do very well with the pairing either, as I'm sure dmc will kick my sorry ass.

Fortunately, I'm positive he'll do it with class. :D

Hmm... that was weird.

I know I played once for the Gold Miner tournament, but then I played a little bit for just the arcade (to practice a little, I guess).

After the first time playing in the tournament, I checked the tournament standings and it looked like I was going to beat Blackthorne if I just got around the same score again for the second time I needed to play.

So that's when I went to play Gold Miner in the arcade for a while. Then I decided I had better go back to finish in the tournament and when I checked in at that time, it said I had already finished. I'm wondering if my arcade (supposedly non-tournament plays) counted somehow...? If they did, they certainly didn't help my score, as it stayed the same.

Not that any of this really matters. I figured I wouldn't get far in the tournament anyway (paired with Blackthorne or not). And it is just a game. I'm just curious, that's all...

Check this (http://www.sorcerers.net/forums/showthread.php?p=647858#post647858), it applies to tournaments as well. What was your best tournament score? Was it higher than BTA's first round winning score?

Alura
Sat, 16th Aug '08, 10:37pm
I don't do any of the things that would cause it to not save. And I always have the 'remember me' box checked.

Tick the "Remember me" box when you log in
Don't use the refresh or back buttons in your browser to start a new game
Only play 1 game at a time (don't have more than 1 game open in browser tabs)

I only actually played in the tournament once and the score I got there was the score I lost with, the one I still have now. But it was enough to beat Blackthorne's first score.

Then it's likely a bug with the Arcade... unfortunately the mod is nowhere near bug free. :( I'm sorry that this has happened to you, but sadly there's no way to negate it because the arcade doesn't offer enough control to allow for fixing issues such as this one.

Alura
Sun, 17th Aug '08, 2:36am
Ah... well that's alright.

I probably would've lost to someone on the right side of the tournament board anyway. I just wanted to report my strange findings. Not sure if it helps others to know what happened to me, though.

Blackthorne TA
Sun, 17th Aug '08, 3:55am
Hm. When I played my second try, it indicated you had already played both your tries.

I have played games outside the tournament and it doesn't count them for the tournament, so I don't know what happened to you...

Taluntain
Sun, 17th Aug '08, 4:17pm
Alura, I just had the same happen to me as it (probably) did to you.

I accidentally opened my second tournament game while fiddling with some settings, but immediately closed it as I didn't really want to play just then. However, doing this has resulted in my "second" match counting too, only 0 as I didn't even start playing. So I'm now showing as having completed 2 rounds and my score is still the same as it was in my 1st round.

I expect that something like this must have happened to you too...

Blackthorne TA
Mon, 18th Aug '08, 6:30pm
Oh, yes, if you start a game and accidentally/purposely exit it before completing, the tournament system counts it. I did that on the Bowling tournament.

dmc
Fri, 22nd Aug '08, 6:03pm
Barely squeaked by you Tal on my second game.

Taluntain
Fri, 22nd Aug '08, 6:42pm
Doh... I was a split second away from going well beyond that score. I was pulling a diamond piggy up and just when it was about to count it, I ran out of time.

dmc
Fri, 22nd Aug '08, 6:54pm
That's happened to me a couple of times. Also, there are some times where you just can't make the score because it's a no-diamond level and there isn't enough gold to bridge the gap. It happens.

Taluntain
Fri, 22nd Aug '08, 8:13pm
Yea, hoard early, hoard often. :D

Blackthorne TA
Sat, 23rd Aug '08, 7:07pm
What I don't like about it is that you have to decide whether to buy diamond polish without knowing if the next level will have any diamonds. It can be a very expensive mistake. It'd be better if the stuff you buy was all like the dynamite sticks: Use when you want.

Taluntain
Sat, 23rd Aug '08, 8:01pm
Yea; I'm pretty good at guessing when the diamonds will show up, but I still miss every now and then.

Aldeth the Foppish Idiot
Tue, 26th Aug '08, 8:28pm
Yeah, but on the big diamond levels (if you guess right) buying the diamond polish can be very profitible. That's how I got my high score, I got about 12 diamonds on one level.

Quick question on the Mahjong tournament if anyone knows. I got fairly unlucky in that my first two attempts were pretty locked up and the third was just good enough to squeak by. If you hit "restart" when you have an obviously horrible board, does that count as one of your attempts?

Loreseeker
Tue, 16th Sep '08, 7:52pm
Aw, eliminated. So close, but not good enough. Congrats, kmonster. :)

dmc: I don't know, but I was under the impression that it counted as a new try. Not sure though.

It didn't seem to. I tried it on my last attempt though so I only know that it will take the last score of the last attempt OK if you reset. Seems like something you shouldn't do though in a tournament :)

Taluntain
Tue, 16th Sep '08, 10:57pm
I hit restart in the beginning a few times on every attempt and it made no difference. Since you've got the ability to restart within this game, I guess it's impossible to have a fair tournament since everyone can just restart until they get a better score. I only restart so I get a board that remotely looks finishable, not later on.

Couldn't you retry as often as you wanted in the gold miner tournament too ?

dmc
Wed, 17th Sep '08, 2:04am
I don't know, I never tried to do it. I think there should be a standing rule in tournaments that there are no retries, you get what you get and that's it.

I just created a pacman tournament. Since this game doesn't allow to reset or to retry endlessly and an attempt takes only about 10 minutes it will be fast and fun.

I joined that.

BTW, how do you make a try take 10 minutes? I have trouble staying alive for half that time. :p :o

Just wait 9 minutes before clicking "start game". So you only have to survive for 1 minute. :D

The "press direction key shortly and pacman will take this direction at the next corner" controls are a little bit unusual but once you get used to them you'll consider them far superior for this game compared to standard "only move while direction key is pressed" controls.
It takes a little time to get used to them, but you should get the hold of it after a few games.

I usually wait at the energy pills until a ghost gets very close and always try to eat all 4 of them for many bonus points. Use the energy pills wisely, if all of them are used and the screen is still filled with normal pills to eat, you're in serious trouble. I usually try to eat the pills on the bottom at the beginning, since you can get trapped quite easily there later.

I suggest creating 4-player tournaments instead of 8-player, since it takes too long to get 8 players in most cases.
