View Full Version : Abnormally long loading times
Taluntain Mon, 1st Sep '08, 8:26pm We're trying to get this fixed, but feedback from users who are experiencing it is helpful, because apparently it's not happening for everyone.
What's characteristic of this problem is that pages are taking 2+ minutes to load (either on the site or the forums). This has been happening for me for the last 2 hours or so. If you're experiencing it as well, please post here!
Montresor Mon, 1st Sep '08, 8:39pm I've been seeing this on and off the last few days. It's not consistent.
Edit: Additional info.
I have high-speed DSL and have the problem on different computers with different antivirus/firewall systems. I have also tried a few different browsers, just to make sure.
martaug Mon, 1st Sep '08, 8:39pm Yep, happening to me too. I have high speed cable but it is loading like it used to on dial-up.
a soubriquet Mon, 1st Sep '08, 8:56pm Happening to myself, as well. Using cable-based internet; "tubro-charged" Road Runner to be exact. I also noticed that some ads failed to appear (don't know which, obviously) and the list on the left, like "games," "fantasy books," main," "fantasy worlds," etc don't appear, either.
dmc Mon, 1st Sep '08, 9:12pm I've got DSL here and it has been happening for the last couple of days.
Taluntain Mon, 1st Sep '08, 9:39pm It seems that this problem is far more widespread than I thought. :bad: Our server provider is looking into it. Thanks for your patience everyone, I hope that we can get this sorted quickly.
Anyone who experiences it and hasn't replied in this thread please do so still, we still need the info.
Morgoth Mon, 1st Sep '08, 9:45pm The problem just started for me here. I have loading times of about a few minutes, but I found out that refreshing sometimes means shorter loading times.
I also have problems with long loading times when I read sorcerers at work, but that is because of the javascript from tribal fusion that needs to time out. It is blocked at my office and - unfortunately - modifying the firewall is not allowed since at work we deal with military procedures ;)
Blackthorne TA Mon, 1st Sep '08, 10:22pm It was slow earlier (not as long as minutes but much longer than usual). Seems fine now.
martaug Mon, 1st Sep '08, 10:38pm yep, it's loading quickly now, no lag at all.
Taluntain Tue, 2nd Sep '08, 12:14am It's better for me now, but still not as fast as it should be.
The Great Snook Tue, 2nd Sep '08, 12:36am I also had some slow load times. Nothing as bad as some others. I'm on a cable modem. It is getting better.
Loreseeker Tue, 2nd Sep '08, 10:06am Happened to me on, I think, Sunday morning (GMT +2) . A few times in the past there were unusually long loading times too, but I chalked it off to my connection or something at the time.
ADSL here.
Since I wasn't online yesterday evening, I don't know if it happened again. Everything is normal now.
Silvershield Fri, 5th Sep '08, 10:03am Weird because yesterday it was perfectly fine, however now it's taking around 30 seconds or so just to load a page :(
Silvery Fri, 5th Sep '08, 10:11am It's just started this morning for me.
Thought it was my internet connection at first. At least now I know I'm not the only one.
Just took about 10 minutes for me to get from the sites front page, to the new posts, into here
Decados Fri, 5th Sep '08, 11:08am Like Silvery, today is the first time I've had problems. I have a reasonable connection speed so pages are normally fast to load, but this morning I've had to wait quite a while. Incidentally, we both appear to be from the UK.
Ragusa Fri, 5th Sep '08, 11:36am I have had that phenomenon also throughout this week, from work and from home (DSL 3000). I'm using Firefox 3.
Silvery Fri, 5th Sep '08, 12:36pm We are both from the UK Decados but I don't think it's a localised thing, there are people posting on here from all over the place!
The Great Snook Fri, 5th Sep '08, 1:17pm I had problems, then they went away, now they are back.
Taluntain Fri, 5th Sep '08, 2:53pm Same for me as well. This is completely out of my hands unfortunately and only our server provider can do something about it and even they not directly, because this is apparently an issue with their tier 1 providers. Still, I'm counting on them doing something about it, and soon, otherwise I'll be forced to move servers elsewhere as this is completely unacceptable.
Ziad Fri, 5th Sep '08, 3:51pm It's started for me this morning as well. It's rather erratic though. It took me several minutes to get into Sorcerous Sundries then two seconds to get into this post. As I try to access other posts now it's gone back to slow.
EDIT: Gone back to lightning speed now...
Taluntain Fri, 5th Sep '08, 4:37pm FINALLY back to normal for me as well. I just hope it lasts.
Silvershield Fri, 5th Sep '08, 4:50pm Woooo back to instant loading times :D
Ragusa Sun, 7th Sep '08, 9:07pm I did notice a longer delay, roughly a minute for BoM, just moments ago. The other pages I was surfing simultaneously loaded much faster.
Trellheim Sun, 7th Sep '08, 9:27pm Mine still makes a slight (15s) pause before it starts loading. It's only the front page though.
Taluntain Sun, 7th Sep '08, 10:32pm Takes up to 30 seconds for pages to load for me as well again.
Ragusa Mon, 8th Sep '08, 1:55am Yup. It's back :(
The Kilted Crusader Mon, 8th Sep '08, 2:21pm It took me a good 30 seconds to get onto the second page of this thread.
Splunge Mon, 8th Sep '08, 5:56pm I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary. The occasional 5-10 second delay, but that's not unusual.
Aldeth the Foppish Idiot Mon, 8th Sep '08, 6:16pm Right now it's working fine, but it wasn't working correctly earlier today, or Friday. It seems like it comes and goes.
joacqin Mon, 8th Sep '08, 9:04pm I have had it as well, thought it was something wrong with my cmoputer.
Kitrax Wed, 10th Sep '08, 9:17am The Bom has been fine for me up until just now. It took 1-2 minutes just for this page to load. :bad:
Montresor Wed, 10th Sep '08, 9:40am I have very long loading times this morning, too. :(
Silvery Wed, 10th Sep '08, 9:49am Great fun. Any idea how long the delays are expected to continue? I'm addicted to BoM and it's giving trouble getting my fix!
Takara Wed, 10th Sep '08, 11:13am Happens every other day now. Yesterday, fine, day before like it is now...
kmonster Wed, 10th Sep '08, 12:13pm My loading times are still slow now. I thought this post would never get submitted.
Erod Wed, 10th Sep '08, 2:12pm 1 to 2 minutes load times now. It takes a long time for the request to go through, but after that it loads fast. I have seen a similiar problem before and then it was solved with some tuning of the web server configuration.
Trellheim Wed, 10th Sep '08, 3:24pm 1-2 minutes to load everything. Back to abnormality.
Splunge Wed, 10th Sep '08, 3:34pm 1-2 minutes here as well.
Taluntain Wed, 10th Sep '08, 3:40pm Same for me as well... our server provider can't seem to figure out why this is happening. First they blamed their tier 1 providers, who of course denied any responsibility, then they looked at the server, which again apparently wasn't the culprit. The fact that the loading times aren't persistently bad is only making it harder to trace the root cause. We're looking into it is all I can say unfortunately. We'll be moving to a new server in the next few days and if these issues appear there as well we'll be troubleshooting it from that point.
Iku-Turso Wed, 10th Sep '08, 4:06pm Yup, lag in loadtimes here as well, been that way a long time, I guess it was on saturday this worked normally, but today's been slow as anything...at least 30sec load times...
edit: ...and now, a few minutes later it's back to normal again...
Silvery Fri, 12th Sep '08, 11:12am Can we not all just go and yell at somebody until they fix it? These sever type thingey people?
Iku-Turso Fri, 12th Sep '08, 11:24am Lagging again...
8people Fri, 12th Sep '08, 11:44am Is it me or is it the same times every day? :hmm:
Iku-Turso Fri, 12th Sep '08, 12:46pm Hey, could be usually the lagging seems to ease off in the afternoon/evening...
Ragusa Fri, 12th Sep '08, 1:10pm Lagging again. Even when loading the front page.
Iku-Turso Fri, 12th Sep '08, 1:51pm for me it's speedier again
Taluntain Fri, 7th Nov '08, 2:42pm This is happening again, unfortunately... I'm looking into it. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Ziad Fri, 7th Nov '08, 7:07pm It seems to have gone back to normal now.
Scratch that, they still happen. It's as erratic as the previous time.
Is this the same server provider that you had the last time this problem happened?
Taluntain Fri, 7th Nov '08, 8:55pm Yes; though we're on a different server now. Of course this doesn't mean anything since their tier 1 providers are still the same, and if it's an issue related to the sites on the server, it'd still be happening as well. The problem is that everything on the server side looks fine; it'd be much easier to pinpoint the problem if I was seeing the usual suspects in such situations, but I don't. If it continues to happen I'll have to devote some more time to getting to the bottom of it.
Taluntain Sat, 8th Nov '08, 9:51pm I've made some configuration changes that at least momentarily seem to have speeded things up. I'll be monitoring the situation further, but for now I welcome any feedback on how the page loading situation is for all of you. If pages load faster (or slower), please post here.
Silvery Sat, 8th Nov '08, 10:24pm going slow again babes. it wouldn't be something daft like all the ads and stuff would it? probably a dumb suggestion, i'm not good with technology!
Taluntain Sat, 8th Nov '08, 10:38pm Nope, the ads aren't it.
dmc Sat, 8th Nov '08, 11:03pm Works fine for me today.
Takara Sat, 8th Nov '08, 11:53pm It's loading faster fur me.
Silvery Sun, 9th Nov '08, 12:11am It's loading faster fur me.
well it would, it likes you :P
Ziad Sun, 9th Nov '08, 1:44pm It's a little slow again this morning, but not as slow as a couple of days ago.
Montresor Sun, 9th Nov '08, 2:56pm The problem is not as bad as it has been but it is back, periodically. At other times, the server is as fast as ever, or better.
