View Full Version : Character Selection
Mel Ti Sun, 9th Jan '05, 5:04pm Hi, I'm new to the game and am using a very good Guide that I found on this site. However, right at the beginning the guide talks of selecting a character that is a fighter/mage! Now, I don't know if I'm missing something here, but all I can see to selct is single descriptions, i.e. Fighter, Mage, etc. etc. There doesn't seem to be an option to select a character that is a fighter and a mage.
Can anyone help me with this?
Nakia Sun, 9th Jan '05, 5:13pm PC is human? Personaly the first time through I would start with a straight fighter. You can dual class later. You'll can get lots of help here on dual classing when you are ready.
:edit: Welcome to the board. This is best of this type and you'll find lots of information and help.

Mel Ti Sun, 9th Jan '05, 5:25pm Thanks for that, :) I don't understand the, "PC is human?" bit though.
Nakia Sun, 9th Jan '05, 5:36pm Sorry, poor wording. :o Is your main character a human being? Wait for other suggestions before you decide. You will get a lot.
Mel Ti Sun, 9th Jan '05, 6:17pm As far as I know, yes, he is a human being. :)
Takara Sun, 9th Jan '05, 6:40pm Humans cant multi class. If you want a fighter/mage you need to use a different race. Try a half-elf or elf.
Sarevok• Sun, 9th Jan '05, 6:44pm Mel Ti, listen, don't use a guide with this game, it just ruins it. You will only get to the end and then wish you hadn't used it. It also wouldn't hurt to put it on a normal or hard difficulty level. Pick a class that appeals to you. Look at the information on each class and kit and pick something you like, don't take any notice of what anyone else says.
San Ti Sun, 9th Jan '05, 6:51pm @Takara: i would suggest a half elf because they dont have any penalties in constitution like the elfs have
yeah i agree with sarevok about using the guide.DONT use it. well as conserns creating a character i would suggest a lawfull good figher or a paladin (though i hate those two classes)it is good for a begginer to have a character who is strong and can make use of all weapons...(i started with an assasin)
EDIT: Oh and DONT speed it you will ruin the whole thing :aaa:
Jathszu Khatharua Mon, 10th Jan '05, 12:03am I agree with Sarevok that you should put the game on a normal difficulty level. Don't use guide! Pick whatever class you want (But I don't think that the sorcerer is good choice for the first game).
Son of Bhaal Mon, 10th Jan '05, 2:54am True true true, dont jump this game, it has LOADS to offer, mess around with it and loose a few games, trust me, choose what you thin ksound the best and go along with the game, if after a few attempts at getting stumped, try following a guide... and btw, welcome to the boards, the world is your oyster, but this is where you belong...
omnigodly Mon, 10th Jan '05, 7:32am In agreement with everyone else, don't use a guide your first time through, I would suggest playing a fighter your first time through as well. Remember, that instead of using a guide, ask us for help if you're stuck, we'll usually help you so that you don't get the ending of quest spoiled and such.
(btw for the FIRST dungeon where you appear)

The way you get through those locked doors, the sewer golem can open them, but you have to find a statue. The Statue is found in a room where a single thing in a tube talks to you, (his name is reliev I think). It's on one of the tabls just in front of him ;) .

Mel Ti Mon, 10th Jan '05, 12:16pm Hi guys
Thanks for all the advice and suggestions, due to storm force winds here last night, I was up all night playing the game as it's impossible to sleep through that noise. :) Oh, and spent half the night getting killed and restarting from an auto save. ;)

omnigodly: Many thanks for your reply, I've actually got past the sewer golem, I'd found the activation stone and given it to him so off he trotted, I managed to find him at the first place he went to, but he soon gave me the slip.
Anyway, I kept on exploring, managed to get through the library after a bit of a fight, and am currently still running arond in circles. :)
San Ti Mon, 10th Jan '05, 4:31pm mel ti try to have a single class character. For a begginer a multi class is very complicated since you have to balance their stats so try to make a straight fighter.have fun playing BG2 :D
omnigodly Mon, 10th Jan '05, 9:44pm The sewer Golem opens 3 doors I believe. Look at your mini-map and I'm sure you'll notice where you have gone, (m is the key for your map).
Mel Ti Mon, 10th Jan '05, 11:58pm Thanks for your help guys. Just like to say that after hours of playing the game today, I have made it out the first dungeon, and met up with Yoshimo. :)
After I got him and myself(PC) killed, I decided to call it a night, and try again tomorrow. I had saved the game before I moved forward with Yoshimo. :)
omnigodly Tue, 11th Jan '05, 12:01am lol that part of the dungeon is rather fun I thought :) . Interesting stuff too, just makes sure you use your special abilities as the child of bhall, (f12 is the hotkey, but it's the star icon on the bottom right of the screen).
San Ti Tue, 11th Jan '05, 2:05am i hate jon dungeon im bored of it i have played it more than 100 times.IM SERIOUS i create characters for fun and i test them in jons dungeon
Isshy Tue, 11th Jan '05, 10:28am Hi Mel Ti...I'm new also. I have done the dungeons one too many times myself. I found the walkthrough early cuz I had NO idea of how to play the game and used it for the dungeon and 2 later quests...kinda sux cuz now I know everything about those areas so I'm not usin the walkthrough anymore...too much info can ruin the game.
Ziad Tue, 11th Jan '05, 10:34am If you're that desperate not to play the dungeon again, try the Dungeon-Be-Gone mod. It offers some pretty funny dialogues and the ability to skip the dungeon entirely, and still get the nifty items.
No matter how many times I play through it, I still enjoy Jonny's dungeon.
Newfie Tue, 11th Jan '05, 11:10am Yeah, I remember when i first played it I said this is one cool dungeon, especially starting from scratch with no items. Anyone remember what classic D&D module did that to high level characters?
Mel Ti Tue, 11th Jan '05, 12:09pm Well, funnily enough, I got through the dungeon and into Athkatla fairly quickly! I was quite surprised to be honest, as I expected it to take me as long getting through it as it did the first one.
Anyway, one odd thing that happened is that when I got into Athkatla, Imoen was taken away by the Wizard dudes, only thing is, she wasn't really there, as she was killed in Jons dungeon!
Eric Xanthus Tue, 11th Jan '05, 5:39pm Imoen can't get killed in Jon's dungeon. Her hp goes to 1, she screams about not wanting to go through this again, and she runs out ahead of you. You basically catch up to her at the exit and then she gets taken.
Mel Ti Tue, 11th Jan '05, 7:24pm Ahh, ok, thanks for that :) I did wonder what was happening.
Deuce Tue, 11th Jan '05, 11:14pm @ Newfie
That was the 4th module in the "Against the Slave Lords" series. I think the title was "In the Dungon of the Slave Lords." The set up was a little lame, as you finished module 3 by finding a "secret enterance" to the Slave Lords Hide-out, only to enter into a (unbreakable) glass cell which then filled with no-save brand sleeping gas as the assembled Slave Lords watched and chuckled. I was DMing and a couple of my player were really torqued, with good reason. Good news was the Dungon rocked, and the party of course felt great when they escaped and planted the boot of Justice squarely in the backside of those Evil Doers.
Shelyid-the-stupid-apprentice Wed, 26th Jan '05, 9:12pm a quick pointer, mel ti, is that you should pick up a spellcaster or two when you run through the game your first time, even if you're going with a fighter, to get used to how the magic works. because, i just know you'll have to play the game again...and again...and again... and spellcasters are the best :D
SCKnight Wed, 2nd Feb '05, 7:58pm I recommand that you wait to dual-class until you have played through the game at least once. This is because once you dual-class, you're stuck with the new class. In addition, playing a good-aligned character is also a good idea, because most of the best NPCs that can join your party are good-aligned characters (I might be wrong about this). Furthermore, if you play an evil character, you will be attacked by Knights of the Radiant Hart and Cowled Wizards while you're in Amn. Here's one final tip: don't cast any mage spells in Amn until you get a license from the Council of the Six. I can't remember who you go to in order to get it, but you'll need at least 5,000 gold to get it. Once you get the license, you can then use mage spells without being attacked by Cowled Wizards, just as long as you don't start killing people.
Western Paladin Thu, 3rd Feb '05, 9:05am I think you only get attacked on sight if your reputation rating drops to 1. Fortunately, that is quite hard to achieve.
Drugar Thu, 3rd Feb '05, 10:10am When you randomly kill some peasants your reputation will drop fast enough.
SCKnight Thu, 3rd Feb '05, 4:18pm Actually Western Paladin, according to the manual, when your reputation hits 3, there's a chance that the Knights of the Heart and or the Cowled Wizards come after you. You may be attack by one of them, or worse, by both! When your reputation reaches 0, knights and wizards will always appear with 100% certainly and come charging at you! My advice when this happens it to run to the nearest temple and starting donating a lot of money! Another solution is to get ShadowKeeper and change your reputation using it.
Faraaz Thu, 3rd Feb '05, 6:33pm Reputation changes made in Shadowkeeper do not apply to the game.
I.E. if you have a reputation of 8, and set it to 20 in SK, you won't get the benefits of having a 20 rep.
SCKnight Thu, 3rd Feb '05, 7:15pm That's true. However, if you use the cheat codes while in the game, I believe you will get the benefits of having a 20 reputation.
toughluck Thu, 3rd Feb '05, 7:17pm SCKnight -- IIRC, it's enough to donate 100,000 gp once and your reputation skyrockets to 18 (or was it 12?).
Seems like I recalled incorrectly. It's enough to donate 5,000 gp and your reputation goes up to 17. I'm not sure if it simply jumps up, or if it's a prerequisite. If it's the latter, donate the amount on the left to get the level on the right (copied from BG2 manual):
1500 | 1
1200 | 2
1000 | 3
1000 | 4
500 | 5
400 | 6
200 | 7
300 | 8
400 | 9
500 | 10
700 | 11
900 | 12
200 | 13
500 | 14
2000 | 15
2500 | 16
5000 | 17
SCKnight Thu, 3rd Feb '05, 7:23pm Good point, toughluck.
Shrikant Fri, 4th Feb '05, 8:39pm IIRC its cumulative. So if you have 0 rep, add up all that money and donate to a temple to get to 17 rep.
You cant buy your way to greater than 17 rep.
