View Full Version : Idea for making a nearly-invincible PC. Is this cheating?

I recently thought of a way to make your character much more powerful. It requires a lot of patience and seems to me to be bordering on cheating. What do you think?

In Hell, with the Tears of Bhaal, use the first four tears, then save the game. Then import the character into a new game. Play through the game until Hell again. Use more Tears. Repeat ad neauseum (possibly quite literally.)
I know this raises WIS by 1 and adds 10% to magic resistance, as well as boosting other stats (specifics escape me). As such, this would be extremely helpful for clerics (25 WIS anyone), and can quickly raise a monk's or wizard slayer's magic resistance to 100%. (Does anyone actually play wizard slayers, though?)

Naturally, this is the height of powergaming, and makes no sense for roleplaying. (The same person repeating two months of their life over and over? Honestly.)

So, what do you think? Even though it is technically within the rules, is this still cheating? Did the designers possibly prevent a character from recieving multiple bonuses in this way? Is it too long to be practical?

You could create a save before going to hell and use that instead of starting a new game for your import...and yes it is powergaming cheese to even consider this. :)

You can import a character into a save-game?

I must have missed that somewhere along the line.

Also, does anyone remember the other bonuses the (good path)tears grant? I'm too lazy to go look them up myself.

That is sure as hell cheating to me. (Oh man, I kill me. :D)

Fubini ---> Here are the bonuses for both the evil and good path:

*spoiler*

Good:

Immunity to +1 weapons or less
10% magic resistance
+2 to all saving throws
20% resistance to fire, cold and electrical damage.
+1 bonus to wisdom and charisma

Evil:

+2 to constitution
+2 to AC
15 extra hitpoints
200.000 xp's
+2 to strength

And btw this is definately cheating :p.

Don't forget though - you have to take one point away if you do one of the tasks the good way.

You can import your char to your savegame again and again, choosing the good and evil path about ten times - your char will receive great boni that way :)

10x good path - 100& magic resistance, 100% fire & cold resistance, +20 on all saving throws, +10 to charisma & wisdom

10x evil path - +20 on constitution, +20 to AC, + 2.000.000 xp, +20 to strength.

Sounds fun doesn't it? He will crush any enemy like a beer can. But undfortuantely you will fall asleep over the game too often to really enjoy it *sob* :D :p

IMHO that is NOT cheating. You replay the game and deserve a reward.

Not like those sissies that need lame utils for that!

Of course it's not cheating ... your main char is caught in a magical timeloop - experienceing the whole story again and again, poor soul. But fortunately he'll become really strong as a reward :)

Sounds like PST . . .

you just have to tattoo some instructions on your PC's back, and you're golden!

Why not just use Shadowkeeper? It would be an easier, less cheesy, form of cheating. Just because you are exploiting, er, using the game to pad your stats, doesn't mean it isn't cheesy.
Either way, do whatever you want and enjoy the game. You paid your money and don't owe anyone an explanation about how you play.

Extremist, two things:
1. If you think that playing a computer game a certain way prevents you from being a sissy, you probably already are one. :)
2. Do you have to use  in every post? Maybe you are always mad because deep in your heart, you know you are a sissy. :)

MUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Pal, you're not the first with that conclusions. Wrong conclusions.

What should I say? Repeat myself again?
If you think I'm sissy, why don't YOU try to help people with problems on the boards? Ah, you can't... Those problems can't be solved with :-X util... Life sux, you'd say.

Anyway, you just made an entry to my SK users black book. Like all those who actually suggest people to get more BUGS in their game, from now on you're ignored by me. You don't give a damn about it? I don't give a damn even more.

The tomato smiley? Pal, if you don't know what it means, don't ask me. Ask the one who created it. I'm just using it to express my feelings when I spot mentioning of that :-X util on the boards. And that's not rare.

Oooh, I made the list. Not that.

Get over yourself "extremist". I didn't realize that being an expert in a video game guaranteed that you aren't a sissy. I stand by my original statement.

And for the record, I have never needed your help, and will never need your help. So your threat of withholding is meaningless to me. I come to the board to be part of the community and discuss the game, not to seek help. Being part of the community means (to me) joking as well as helping.

Maybe when (if?) you grow up, you will develop a sense of humor.

What is cheating and what is not ??

Just like playing BG1 many times to read the tomes many times and have 24 or 25 in all stats. Is it cheating ?

I guess each players has its own definition of cheating...

If you "break the rules" and you still have fun, I would say it is ok (so kind of NOT cheating). If you break the rules and after some hours of play you find it boring 'cause you are overpowered and you do not need any tactics to win....Well ask yourself if you're cheating....

Don't forget that tactics in tough battle is a fun part of the game !!!

*shrugs* I don't see how it's skin off anyone's back if someone else cheats. I think it would be hugely boring to go around with all 25 stats and Arkanis' sword of insta-death, but if someone else thinks that's fun, who am I to complain? Maybe they think it's boring to keep going back and replaying the game meticulously, which is what I like to do. Different strokes for different folks. (-:

Exactly. I don't understand why some folks get their panties in a bunch when someone else "cheats". They paid their money for the game and can play it however they want.

I play the game straight. That said, I couldn't care less if someone uses cheat codes, ShadowKeeper (oh no Extremist is going to be mad at me), or fires cloudkill into the fog of war.

Play however you want and if someone else doesn't like it, too bad.

What the bloody hell....knew there was some reason I quit reading topics on these boards ;) So let me get this straight...you play throught the game multiple times to create this uber powerful character. That's cool, but for what exactly. I suppose if you have that many extra free minutes in a day, well, at least you've played the game plenty of times. But honestly, if all you want to do is pad your stats, why worry about cheating and go through all that?!? I wonder the same thing about people who roll dice for 2 days straight hoping to get all 18's: why in the world bother unless you are just addicted to craps or something. I guess you could brag you did it. But seems like far too much trouble. Is there really anything more noble about doing any of these things than just using shadow keeper and being done with it in two minutes? Maybe I'm just getting old, but I don't see the point. Nice theorectical discussion I suppose, but hardly paractical or worth doing.

What in the hell just happened here???

If you want to cheat in a game that YOU bought with YOUR hard earned money, that is stricktly(am i even spelling this right?) up to you. That is how YOU want to play YOUR game, and NO ONE should tell you other wise.

NOTE FOR EXTREAMIST: I realize that you have dedicated countless hours to fighting the cheaters of the realms, but, honestly, it is non-of your buisness. No one hired you to destroy all cheaters like robo-cop. Lighten up a tad.

To jack-of-all trades:
Cheat as long as you want - do you think I care so much about it? But I DO care when in every single thread I must read about it. Not only that, but you're in fact suggesting people to ruin their fun.
Who needs to losen up here, pal?

[Edit]

Just look today's posts in ToB forum, please.
Is it fair?
Tal, will you please change the name of these forums to "Cheater's".

Hey, it's thier perogative if they want to cheat. and I think that it is great that people can come to this board and let their ideas be heard. although it would be even better if there wasn't a cirtain person spamming the hell out of thier post because you don't like it.

All that i am sugesting is alittle FREE WILL. Is that a problem?

(i still believe that it is you that needs to lighten up bud)

As I see it, if you cando this with only the regular options (i.e. not downloading any patches, add-ons etc) its not cheating.

You could say that I kinda cheat with my character stats, cos I use the cheat that gives you all 18 stats, but I then lower the numbers to make them to the same numbers my p'n'p character stats, if you catch my drift.

You are only cheating if you're breaking the rules. Whatever enviroment your in will determine if your a cheater or not.In your house with your game on your computer, you cant cheat. In multiplayer its cheating only if its not accepted by the group. As far as the rolling until you get all 18's is concerned, thats for those of us who like to feel like we're lucky.Even if it takes 2 days of rolling.I myself enjoy waltzing through levels cause I'm a bad ass. Some people like the story more than the game. Why be troubled with issues like 'cheating' if you want a good read with a little destruction. What all this means is you're only cheating if you think your cheating.

Sheesh. Feels like we ARE going through Hell all over again with all the flames in here. And no reward for it either. :(

EDIT:

I shouldn't start anything I suppose, but I feel compelled. Extremist, if you hate all this cheating stuff so much and you don't want to read it, you could just pay attention to the topic name. /me points up

I might be a little late with my 2c, but I would like to add smth from the philosophycal point of view.

Please consider this:

1) An immature person does something (boost his stats, brag, shows off, or else...) - to impress OTHERS.

Hey Extremist, in one of your posts you say If you think I'm sissy, why don't YOU try to help people with problems on the boards? Ah, you can't...

Take a sec to think: WHY do you do it?
If you do it to impress others - too bad.

2) EVERYTHING a mature person does he does to prove smth to HIMSELF. Such person does not need to brag, persuade others, argue, insist on smth or flame anyone.

SO all of you who posted here, think: WHY I did or said what I did or said? If it is to prove smth to OTHERS - grow up.
If you are mature - this discussion should be over a long time ago.

Modjahed, this is the whole thought:

If you think I'm sissy, why don't YOU try to help people with problems on the boards? Ah, you can't... Those problems can't be solved with :-X util... Life sux, you'd say.

It has nothing to do with impressions. It has everything to do with :-X util problem solving.

Mature or not, proving or not, I stand by my words.

I dont care if other people cheat, but i would try to talk them out of it, beacuse it ruins the game. You always feel a lot better about yourself when you do something without cheating.
