View Full Version : Open Locks Sound
Silvershield Tue, 3rd Apr '07, 5:47pm Recently, after a long period, I began playing the BG series again! I got back into the swings of things immediately, playing my favourite character (a Fighter/Thief of course ;) ) beginning with BGI. Now, after playing that game a VERY LARGE number of times, you begin to notice a few things. In BGI, when you open a lock you get a pretty straightforward noise that lets you know you've opened it! If you fail, you get receive the tampering noise, which means you didn't unlock the particular device. HOWEVER, in BGII, the noise you receive once you open a lock has disappeared! Now you can only hear the sound of the lock being tampered with and not being opened! Any idea why this is so? I actually didn’t realize this until this afternoon, which is strange considering I’ve played this game plenty of times.
Any ideas why that particular sound was removed? Not an especially interesting topic but something that has been on my mind :)
Elfen Lied Tue, 3rd Apr '07, 9:53pm i never noticed it before.
Silverstar Tue, 3rd Apr '07, 11:51pm Err, are you sure it was removed in BG2? I remember hearing it...or I may be wrong, never paid attention, thievery has never been my true passion...spellcraft on the other hand, ahh... :)
Silvershield Wed, 4th Apr '07, 7:02am For a test, try opening the far left chest on the top level on the Candlekeep Inn right at the beginning of BG then try opening the painting right at the start of BGII.
I can't believe no one has noticed it!!!
Elfen Lied Wed, 4th Apr '07, 7:37am its not really something you would think about, whehter or not unlocking soomething has a sound effect or not.
i usually have WMP playing in the background so i dont hear much of the game, sept for some of the louder musical tunes. battles mostly and some of the voice acting.
shadow lurker Wed, 4th Apr '07, 2:50pm Hmm I never noticed it either. I thought it was always there..oh well I don't pay that much attention to it.
Hethan the Skald Wed, 4th Apr '07, 11:32pm I can't tell whether it's the same sound effect, but you can definitely hear an opening lock noise in BG2. Are you sure you can't hear *anything*, man?
Trellheim Wed, 4th Apr '07, 11:43pm There's a clearly audible sound, like a rock bouncing on a piece of wood. You sure you have the sound effect's volume on?
Silvershield Thu, 5th Apr '07, 6:11am No no, I can HEAR the sound but just not the sound from the original BG.
When you are unable to open it, you hear the long tampering sound and when you ARE able to open it, you hear the short tampering sound.
Originally, in BG, when the lock opened you would hear the short tampering sound PLUS a noise that would clearly indicate that you've opened it. WHAT I'm asking is, why did they remove that?
Do people understand what I mean now..
shadow lurker Thu, 5th Apr '07, 10:00am Hmm...maybe they decided that the opening sound was enough without the actual short tampering sounds as well..? Maybe they needed to cut back on the things they had..? Or maybe they forgot about it...?
Silvershield Thu, 5th Apr '07, 12:12pm Hmmm I don't know but it sounds so plain without it :(
Has anyone else noticed this change?
