View Full Version : POLL: Dumbest thing you've ever done in BG1-2?
Jovialjuggler Tue, 13th Nov '01, 12:36pm Whats the stupidest thing you've ever done in bg1? Like, Attack Firkgragg with normal bastard swords or something else? :)
Mine was..
Well, you know in BG1 in ulcaster there is this halfling who wants to sell you a "Gem of true seeing" for 1000? Yeah, well I bought that useless Topaz and when I couldnt find the ulcaster dungeon hole I kept trying to put it in my quick slots..even though it wasn't highlighted.. *sigh* Im not sure what fumes I inhaled that night..
Lokken Tue, 13th Nov '01, 4:14pm Accidentically using the fake talk bug on firkragg. I was so annoyed he didn't fight back that I had to reload. *Grumbles*
oh, and there was one time I used Shadow Keeper and it trashed my game, had to delete everything and reinstall then start over. Boy was I grumpy...
StressedE Tue, 13th Nov '01, 5:56pm Uhm... I installed tob and then as soon as I started it my whole comp restarted. I had been messing up my install dir so I thought that was the problem. So to try and fix it I reinstalled my entire windows98, only to find out it did the exact same thing on a clean windows session. It was a bug which could be fixed with a patch. Although this is prolly not one of the catagory stupid things you meant
Xenecor Tue, 13th Nov '01, 6:02pm Paying the 500gp for the Stone to Flesh Scroll to release Branwen instead of buying it at the temple for 250gp. DOH :(
Nivek The Mad Tue, 13th Nov '01, 6:30pm Clicking on Minsc's "berserker" option, when there was only one badly injured monster left in the room. (I think in the Guarded Temple in Temple dist - tough fight!) Everyone was wounded, some of us pretty badly - and I thought we needed the help. (Bad call, you'll see).
Anyways, as Minsc goes bonkers, my assassin plugs a Bolt of Lightning into the last baddies' left eye socket. Minsc, having no more targets for butt-kicking, goes ahead and swings at the nearest living thing - which happened to be Aerie.
He cleaves her into 2 even halves - critical hit - doing around a zillion damage with Lilarcor.
(I wish I had realized that last bad guy was so close to dead. I admit, I reloaded and had to fight the whole stinkin' crew over again!)
Demonater351 Tue, 13th Nov '01, 6:55pm Doing the paladin stronghold quest where you hafta guard the girl, I worked myself into a lather trying to find the safehouse in the Bridge District (at least that's what I thought he said) Spent an hour doing this, then finally went back to ask where it was again. I looked closely at the dialog this time, and it clearly said DOCKS district! Oops!
mark, the beneficial shah Tue, 13th Nov '01, 8:48pm Trusted Yoshimo.
Namuras Tue, 13th Nov '01, 8:54pm Nothing new that's exceptionally stupid from me since the last time this topic was up... ;)
This might still be worth mentioning though:
On my first time in Spellhold I found a big trap (guess which one ;)). Not expecting her to fail (she had the ring of danger sense), I told Immy to disarm it, and then to move forward... *SQUISH!* The corridor painted red with Immy's blood...
Reload...
Ursaj Tue, 13th Nov '01, 9:47pm Going to Spellhold for the very first time, I didn't know that Yoshimo would cause a little plot twist so I left him at the Copper Coronet. When I got Imoen, I had to dump Jan there and I even thought I could just come back and get him again later!
Will Wed, 14th Nov '01, 12:14am The other day I ran out of identify spells and wanted to use Namarra's Silence ability, so paid a quick visit to the Shadow Thieves' HQ. I forgot to change the menu from he buy/sell one to the identify one and as a result accidentally sold the handy blade to a grinning shadow thief for 1 gp, who promptly put it on sale for 10500 gp. Cue a long cry of "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" followed by much swearing when I realised I hadnt saved the game for ages and couldnt be doing with going all the way back to my last save. Oh well; at least its not much compared to the stupid things I mentioned in previous incarnations of this post.
Masher Wed, 14th Nov '01, 1:50am Dumbest thing? Turning my computer on "just to play for an hour or so".
Yeah right...:D
Culurien Wed, 14th Nov '01, 2:57am Has anyone had this happen?
One of my NPCs (Yoshimo, I think) got hacked in a tough battle I didn't want to repeat, so I went to a temple to get him back and was feeling cheap so I went for resurrection rather than raise dead... He comes back with 1 hp and suddenly in bursts that guy who throws a coin at you (doing exactly 1 damage), and throws it at Yosh. who promptly dies again. Since I have a policy of never reloading unless something gets screwed up permanently, I had to shell out for another spell. The worst thing was the priest just saying something like, 'Oh yes, that's just some harmless crazy guy, ha ha.'
My apologies if this is standard every time you resurrect someone for the first time. (Is it?) Anyway, it never occurred to me that I should save before resurrecting.
FoolioBuddumz Wed, 14th Nov '01, 3:50am stopped playing bg2 for a year >_<
zaknafein Wed, 14th Nov '01, 10:23am the crushing trap in spellhold. after trying to disarm it i just send imoen through them both resurecting her when she died. then it occured to me. monster summoning.
having edwin kamikazeing with a cloudkill and killing a recently resurected korgan was pretty dumb to
ArtEChoke Wed, 14th Nov '01, 3:41pm I'm positive that I've done things even dumber than this, but its the only one I can remember right now:
Edwin had transformed into Edwina, and at the copper coronet talked to this horny elf, who put the moves on him/her. Edwina goes nuts and hits him with a magic missle, making him go red, as well as everyone else in the tavern within site (except for that fat bartended, forget his name). So I pause the game and turn off the party AI before they go nuts and slaughter everyone in the place, and I'm now worried that I'll forget and wander in there later, with the AI on and kill everybody inside.
So Demons kill everything in sight right? and you don't lose reputation for that. I cast protection from evil, and {sigh} summon a pit fiend, while its gating in, I realize I need the bartender to survive, so I cast protection from evil on him too (I think I'm pretty smart at this point).
The Demon gates in and immediately launches a fireball killing most of the bar patrons and the bartender.
Neitsabes-Naej Wed, 14th Nov '01, 9:38pm I wanted to go through BG with a ranger, than bring him throuig BG2 and ToB as an archer.
I realized He was a Fallen ranger Only once I was in BG2. Go back into my BG1 saved game to see from when He became "Fallen ranger" and did not found....
So I play him through BG1 without beeing able to do an archer in BG2 with him....
The Grim Ripper Wed, 14th Nov '01, 10:39pm Fill my characters bags full of gems! stupid Gem bags! :D
StressedE Thu, 15th Nov '01, 7:16am Here's a good one.
I cast febleemind on the black dragon.
He was standing there hopeless.
I wanted to see if I could charm him.
I wanted him to a have full life pet dragon,
so I cast heal on the dragon.
After that he attacked me :(
No pet dragon for me.
Next time I'll try to charm him 1st

Naer Dhal Fri, 16th Nov '01, 6:27am Well at the fight with Baron Ployer, he calls up the 3 mages to help him, well I figure no match for me, when the game autopauses with enemy sightings, I'm being clever, casting a silence spell, what I forget is, then mages aint there yet, just coming thru dimension doors, and well it backfired and rendered ½ my party useless, and boy did I get a whooping..DOH
Arabwel Fri, 16th Nov '01, 7:48am I whacked the Ilthilids in their lair BEFORE I got that door open... Had to do the whole lair again...
Ara
(Just got out of the Oulu version of Spellhold for youths... overjoyed)
StressedE Fri, 16th Nov '01, 8:33am Uhm, there is one illithid that keeps respawning for a long while...
All the way to the right...
You probably didn't have to do it again...
Lord Sarevok Fri, 16th Nov '01, 10:03am Dumbest thing I ever did was let my friend borrow it who summarily lost it!
RythmicBarbarian Fri, 16th Nov '01, 11:42am Dumbest thing that I did happened while adventuring near the temple of the forgotten god in the unseeing eye quest. The PC being in front always stepped on the Flesh to Stone trap. I don't know what was wrong with me that night but I started cussing after reload and reload trying to figure out why each time I got there, I kept turning to stone. I forgot to use Yoshimo to scout and didn't notice the trap sound and whatnots.
And it was my third time through!
TriLleX The Wise Fri, 16th Nov '01, 10:25pm The dumbest thing i have done in bg2 is.. uinstall it.. ever tried that before ? It was so.. annoying that i had to install it again.. (Did i say i only have a 13 GB HDD ?)
and.. when i attacked kangaxx with Me (Fighter, lvl 8), Minsc and jaheria.. guess who won ?.. :)
Asmodeus Mon, 19th Nov '01, 2:18pm Accidentally deleting a saved-game i needed desperately.....
StressedE Mon, 19th Nov '01, 3:53pm Installing doesn't take that much time in my case. I made image files of all the CD's, so a recommended installation is happened in a flash, also because I have these image files I can run the game without inserting a CD-ROM, the only problem is that ToB has some copy protection, not allowing it to be copied by vcd. The reason I did this is because I tend to re-install windows every now and then, this really saves me a lot of time
Fubini Mon, 19th Nov '01, 5:12pm In BG1, I pickpocketed the commander of the Flaming Fist (whose name escapes me) for his artifact book that you need to get into candlekeep. Then, after completing half of the quests in the city of Baldur's Gate, I realized that I had lost it and wouldn't be able to get into candlekeep. I had to reload and repeat about ten hours of gameplay.
Methylviolet Mon, 19th Nov '01, 7:24pm The first time I finally got all the way through the game to Irenicus in Hell, it was late, I was tired, so I figured I'd just fight him the next day -- then I'd have beaten the game! Yipee for me! But the next morning, Saturday, my son was up before me and played his own saved game -- where he's in the second chapter -- and when I went to finish up, MY ENTIRE GAME WAS WIPED. Gone. Though I had saved many times over the *weeks* it took me to get that far, only my second chapter save remained.
Sir Yerril of Morningmist Mon, 19th Nov '01, 7:51pm Hmmmm... Charming the six dopplegangers/noblemen in the duchal palace, and attacking Sarevok with them...
bzzzzzzztt-crash
Spudsquisher Mon, 19th Nov '01, 8:12pm hmm dumbest thing i have ever done in BG1-2.. Aerie!
Chance Thu, 22nd Nov '01, 11:22pm By far the dumbest(from BG1):
I killed Marek during the Lothander quest before talking to him. No save. 400+ hours(real time)gameplay down the toilet.
Sir Dargorn Fri, 23rd Nov '01, 12:43am i bought the game.....by far the dumbest of the lot.
kingsgambit Fri, 23rd Nov '01, 12:29pm First of all I want to say I think Nivek the Mad has the funniest post in this thread...sorry dude, but you have to admit it *is* amusing! ;)
I think my dumbest thing to date (not finished it yet!) was my earth shattering fight with Kangaxx. Fought him, beat him into his Demi-Lich form, when he proceeded to imprison the party and we didn't lay a finger on him. Okay, so reload the quicksave, try again, exactly the same thing. Not dissuaded that my tactics would work, after all I am six plus summoned creatures and he's just a floating skull. I must have tried about 10 times before conceding the possibility that *maybe* it wouldn't work that way!! Bought a scroll for "Spell Immunity", cast protection from abjuration, hid everyone else but my quarterstaff weilding mage in the corner, and took the skull out in 20 seconds without a scratch. I felt pretty dumb!
Oh and after just getting to the Underdark, got the timestop scroll and thought I'd use it in a fight with those mushrom things...so I do, proceed to cast two fingers of death, and when time reverts I'd killed two of my own party!! Well it was a crowded litle area, and everything looks so alike when it's greyed out for time stop, all crowded like that! Yeah, I'll keep telling myself that. Beat that Mr. Nivek! ;)

StressedE Fri, 23rd Nov '01, 5:01pm How about q as autosave and w as autoload.
I can remember loading instead of saving after difficult fights,
and remember saving instead of loading after pickpockets went wrong.
I played through the entire BGI with those binds
Julius Skull Fri, 23rd Nov '01, 11:40pm Spent fifteen minutes throwing everything I had at that "hate monster" inside the old underground temple. Should have probably figured something was up after five minutes. I was like, "man, this thing's pretty tough!". After talking to the small child it all made sense.
Oh! another thing comes to mind.... I decided to have jaheira shapeshift to a bear and cast her out of my party when she was cursed because she was running out of time. I figure she had about two days left or so. The bear form bolstered her stats to the point where she could conceivably survive another week or so. In addition, I decided to test the theory that if you cast a party member who is cursed out of the party, they won't just die on the street. Well, she just died on the street, in bear form (although her corpse was human). What's worse, I couldn't resurrect her even when i found her hair, and so she remained on the streets of Athkala till the end of the game as a constant reminder of my idiocy.
Namuras Sun, 25th Nov '01, 6:47pm A new one for me: Attacking mean Demi-Lich without having any freedom scrolls. Lost Jaheira in the battle, and with my no-reload-when-bad-things-happen policy, I saved the game... And couldn't find a single scroll in the entire game! Foolish me had Haer'dalis of all people memorise it, and not Jan!
