I don't know if this works but as I know if you dual a thief to a mage you can no longer use the thieving abilities unless you are a mage a lvl higher,(and you don't gain experience for thief leveling either)right?A mage/thief can go up to 13/16 but if you dual a thief to mage when you are lvl 14 you should have a lvl 15 mage who is able to cast lvl 7 spells.I must be wrong but I can't find where :) .And there is another problem; after I installed the patch I realized that I can't generate a dualclass human character though I can in elves gnomes etc.Though I am familiar with AD&D for years my mind had come to a complete stop today so I can't be sure if it is meant to be like that or if it is a bug. Thanks for replies...

OK, I'm having trouble understanding your question, but since nobody else stepped up, I'll take a crack at it.
I don't see anything wrong with your reasoning when talking about dual classing, though I don't have experience tables in front of me so I can't confirm the levels you spoke about.
You can't generate a dual class; you start with a class then dual him/her later, and a dual class character MUST be human.
You can generate a multi-class character of two classes with elves, gnomes etc. but not dual class.
Does that answer any of your questions?

First, thanks Blackthorne for answering..
Second, as I said my mind is completely f.. up so I can't believe I make up sentences with more than 3 words :)
A last question of curiosity:Had anyone tried to dual a swashbuckler to a mage? How effective can it be (AC bonuses etc..)
Oh,here comes another one:Anyone noticed the huge (and I mean huge) difference between a halfling and a human thief? Is it possible to have a halfling thief/mage?If it is ; it may just be the best mage combo...

Halflings cannot become mages in 2nd Edition AD&D.

Well, though it is strange that they can not become mages;a halfling dual thief must be a powerful because you can dual them much sooner without losing critical points in crucial skills. They begin with 70 !! points more than a human (yes 70 and that makes 3,5 levels for an ordinary thief) so in the end you might end up in a better fighter/thief char than any other race.

You are getting mixed up with the ideas of DUAL and MULTI class!
A Dual Class character is a human that goes from starting in one class and at some point going into another class... such as Anomen.
A Multi-Class characters can be from any other race. These characters gain levels at the same time, and split experience gained between these 2 characters.
A Multi-Class Halfling can only really be a Fighter/Thief which is actually a pretty good class to be honest. I have no idea on the Swashbuckler class though... i ain't tried one. Blades are more powerful in my opinion, and they have spells!
