Does this stupid spider ever use its web ability when you tell it to, or is just me?

Yeah it uses it for me. It's web is only for a single target not the big wizard spell version so maybe you just did not see it.

I tend to use the spider as fodder anyway as it just doesnt seem very tough to me.

only usable on mages or weak targets, otherwise, hes just cannonfodder

Why do they make the things you can summon so weak? Almost all of the creatures you can summon are weak, and its a shame.

Any creatures you summon are an addition to the party so it's only fair that they not be of Bhaal-spawn level. That's who you're supposed to be. Besides, not all of the summoning spells are weak, for instance Animate Dead summons Skeleton Warriors once you've leveled up some. Skeleton Warriors are brutes. And great summoning spells are ones that summon the smallest creatures of all...insects. Nothing like a little spell disruption on those enemy mages :D

Ithink there are a lot of very decent conjuring spells availible.

and of course the elementals

Pit fiends can be more powerful than you are when you initially get the priest spell. That and it tanks so well for illithids.
