***Some spoilers, so don't read if you want to be surprised****
Yup, you heard it right. His shapechange werewolf form is strong. But once he hits level 13, he gets ability to change to greater werewolf, which has 21 strength and 3 attacks per round. plus that form gives him 50% resistance to fire, magic fire, cold, magic cold, electricity, and 40% magic resistance. Give him boots of speed, and it's fun to watch him tear thru monsters, growling and all.
But the real reason he is the best warrior NPC is that for some reason, if you leave him in greater werewolf form for several days and rest and move from one map location to another-- at some point he stops using his claws and he can use weapons (this is a bug, but still...) I had him switch between his staff (for regen between battles) and the spear +3 impaler. With the right gear, his thaco goes down to 3 with the spear, and considering he gets 3 attacks per round with such a high strength and the impaler spear is the best weapon in the game (+10 piercing damage with EVERY attack, in additon to regular spear 1d6+3 damage).
Basically my Cernd was ripping thru monsters at 3 attacks per round, rarely missing, and doing minimum 25 damage, max 40-45 damage (on critical hits), with each hit. craziness. Give Cernd proficiency in 2-handed weapon style and his spear will critical hit on attack roll of 19 and 20. If facing golems, just give Cernd the quarterstaff +4 from Ribald's adventure mart and you're good.
BTW, did you know that you can pickpocket a regeneration ring from Ribald?
My 3 main fighters in my game were a monk, Cernd, and Jaheira. Jaheira and monk had strength increasing items. Monk is naturally fast, and the other two had boots of speed. one ring of regen on jaheira and monk, and cernd has his staff for regen. Those 3 were a crazy melee team.
ok, sorry for babbling so much.. :)
