View Full Version : Ankheg Armor
Wingfoot Fri, 25th Aug '00, 3:04am this is great armor to come across. it would be even better if you could wear a Ring of Protection while sporting this fine armor. i looked up Ankehgs in a Monsterous Manual, and its says nothing about this armor being magical. does anybody know why a Ring of Protection can't be wore w/ this armor?
Vermillion Fri, 25th Aug '00, 6:47am I think it's becuase it a "special" armour, like dragon scale armour is in D&D, and so it's classed as magical if you're going strictly by the rules. Personaly I think it shouldn't be classed as an enchanted set of armour because there isn't an enchantment on it and so the wearer can use rings of pretection etc.
caimenking69 Fri, 25th Aug '00, 3:44pm maybe it's like that to balance out the game because i got a guy with AC of -9 and it was pretty easy until our good friend sarevok, and his goofy little "iron" assasins who wanted to visited him before i did
Wingfoot Fri, 25th Aug '00, 7:34pm i gotta agree with ya Vermillion, i dont think it should be enchanted armor. you gat no protection from magical or acid attacks, the only special property is its light weight.
i guess you have answered my question under another topic, about wearing a Ring of Protection with Dragon Hide.
Vermillion Sat, 26th Aug '00, 6:04am Dragon scale armour and a ring of protection was the only thing that saved our cleric from being disintegrated in the underdark campaign.
hooligan_inc Sat, 26th Aug '00, 3:55pm Ankheg armour would be a lot better if it wasn't in a goofy green colour.
Taluntain Sat, 26th Aug '00, 5:52pm Thank Glittergold that Ankhegs aren't pink...
Try imagining a dwarf in pink ankheg armor. That's just disturbing.
Vermillion Sun, 27th Aug '00, 8:42am I don't know, it might start a new trend. "And this season in the dwarven stronghold's the camp look is in..."
DarkCroll Thu, 13th Sep '01, 1:37pm i think that the ankheg armor isnt so good...
i have better armor :)
Extremist Thu, 13th Sep '01, 5:56pm Yeah, yeah.
But my orange armor is bigger/nicer/better than yours. :p
And my daddy is better than yours etc etc...
Wasn't that enough for today!?

DarkCroll Fri, 14th Sep '01, 12:55pm do u have anything agianst me or what mr extremist
[sOv]Storm Sat, 15th Sep '01, 8:09pm i just collected it then sold it then used the extra cash to buy full plate
Tiamat Sat, 15th Sep '01, 10:53pm Which is better, Ankheg Armor or Full Plate?
idoru Sat, 15th Sep '01, 11:11pm don't quote me on this but: Ankheg is just as good as full plate, but it doesn't weight as much.
[sOv]Storm Sun, 16th Sep '01, 5:32pm personally full plate(though it weighs more)it allows u to use rings of protection with it
Headbanger Mon, 17th Sep '01, 12:00pm Indeed, but for creatures with less strength it can be very usefull cause of the low weight. A good fighter with high strength can better use Full Plate and Ring of protection (better Saving Throws too)
i think the armor will at least be pretty useless in my thief-only part :p
Sniper Tue, 18th Sep '01, 12:05am maybe it's like that to balance out the game because i got a guy with AC of -9 and it was pretty easy until our good friend sarevok, and his goofy little "iron" assasins who wanted to visited him before i did
How do we get an AC of -9 in BG1? I want to do that! the lowest i ever got was -3
Taluntain Tue, 18th Sep '01, 12:17am Hehe, check this out. (Out of our BG Encyclopaedia.)
Max Legit AC - 18 dex (6 AC), Full Plate Mail (-3 AC), Helm of Balduran (-4 AC), Shield +1 (-6 AC), Twinkle (-8 AC), Ring of Protection +2 (-10 AC), Claw of Kazgaroth (-11 AC), Cloak of Balduran (-12 AC), make the shield +2 (from TOTSC) and it becomes -13 AC total ;)
Ironbeard Tue, 18th Sep '01, 12:59am Is there *any* way to talk the smith in Beregost into making more than one set of the stuff. It's just I went through with a fighter-heavy party, and found the rarity of full-plate etc. to be a tad irritating.
kemanmaldea Tue, 18th Sep '01, 3:19am Generally I had my two frontline fighters in the two sets of full plate (W/o expantion)and my meele healer got the other ankheg.
Blackthorne TA Tue, 18th Sep '01, 3:43am In case you weren't aware, there's another set of Ankheg armor hidden in a tiny little hole in a field somewhere. I think it's in Nashkel around where Noober was... I could be wrong about the city though...

Taluntain Tue, 18th Sep '01, 9:37am Check the tips & hints page in the BG1 section of SP. The exact coords are there. (Or BG Encyclopaedia.)
Headbanger Tue, 18th Sep '01, 11:07am IIRC you can get three Ankheg plates in the game:
- The one that is buried in the field (farmer's land) in the west of the Nashkel map.
- One is forged by the owner of the Thunderhammer Smithy when you give him an Ankheg scale and 4000 gold pieces.
- You can also let some guy in Baldur's Gate make one for you, you had that right BTA ;)
Sniper Tue, 18th Sep '01, 4:54pm So like, where exactly is the shop in Baldur's Gate that makes this armor? And do you need to bring Angkeg with you?
And Taluntain, whats a twinkle and where can you find it?
[Twinkle is the name of one of Drizzt's swords -BTA]

Ironbeard Tue, 18th Sep '01, 8:57pm IIRC, he just gives you money for the shells, but then at first I thought that about Thunderhammer as well...
Headbanger Wed, 19th Sep '01, 12:14pm Indeed, there are 2 options: Sell the Ankheg's Scale for 500 gp or refuse to sell it and accept the offer to let them make an armor for you for 4000 gp.
I was pretty sure that somewhere in the eastern map op BG you can also let an Ankheg Scale be forged to a weapon but I can't find on the boards or in a walkthrough where and it is some time ago that I've been in Baldur's Gate. I suppose it can't be found for less people still have one of that heavy scales while entering Baldur's Gate, can someone else tell where exactly in BG they can make such an armor?
the_eleven Thu, 20th Sep '01, 1:48am you can find the Ankheg armor in Nashkel in a field on the southwest portion of the map at x-185, y-2743.
i never heard of making a set of armor in the city of Baldurs Gate, but you can sell the shells to Fenton who resides in a locked house in the southeast portion of the same map as the High Hall. maybe he can forge a set of armor for you. i guess its worth a try.

Lokken Thu, 20th Sep '01, 4:35pm the armor on the field is removed when you install the patch, so either pick it up before you install the patch or live without it
[sOv]Storm Fri, 21st Sep '01, 1:27am first u can still get the armour from the field after u install the patch, but after u get fullplate use it and a ring of protection even though it is heavier it is +2 to your armour class
DragonRider SkyWard Sun, 23rd Sep '01, 8:51pm I might be worng but whats the best com-bo you can come up with Ankheg armor? My best is
Ankheg Armor
Helm or Balduran
Cloak of Balduran
AC: 0
Can anyone else come up with some thing better?
Lokken Sun, 23rd Sep '01, 10:04pm Full plate
Ring of protection
Tower shield (the missile shield)
Helm of Balduran
Cloak of Balduran
Gauntlets of dex
Defender (drizzt's scimitar)
[This message has been edited by Lokken (edited September 24, 2001).]
DragonRider SkyWard Tue, 25th Sep '01, 2:46am Lokken, what was your AC? just cure-E-ess
Lokken Tue, 25th Sep '01, 5:03pm natural armor class 10
gaunts of dex, sets dex to 18: -4 to natural armor class
full plate: -9
tower shield: -2
cloak: -1
helm: -1
defender: -2
ring of protection: -2
let's see
10 + (-4-9-1-1-2-2-2) = 10 + (-21) = -11
[This message has been edited by Lokken (edited September 26, 2001).]
kemanmaldea Tue, 25th Sep '01, 11:54pm Yep there is a +2 ring of protection. You get it from the mage in the tall tower.
[sOv]Storm Wed, 26th Sep '01, 4:06am first your wrong on two things, the tower shield adds 2 to armour class and if you play thrugh enough you can get a 4 base armour class making it possible for a -13 armour class
Lokken Wed, 26th Sep '01, 9:30am I might be wrong with the towershield, but what else?
play through enough? I never play through the game with the same guy, how boring is that. Why don't you just use the console to get those dex tomes
[sOv]Storm Thu, 27th Sep '01, 12:42am i was speaking purly legit, or well sort of ive never actually played through that many times...
Not enough patience
lol
Headbanger Fri, 28th Sep '01, 11:55am There is a shield in ToB that gives -2 to AC, in BG there is no shield that lowers your AC by more then 1.
As Elf you can get a dexterity af 19, does this lower your AC also one more? With the Tome of Dexterity you can even get a dex of 20. With Kiel's Buckler you can get even a dexterity of 21.... What will then we the Armor class? :)
Ragusa Fri, 28th Sep '01, 12:12pm IIRC there was a large shield +2 in durlag's tower hidden in the room with the rune carpet :hmm:
This, anyway, would give -3 on AC ;)
[This message has been edited by Ragusa (edited September 28, 2001).]
Lokken Fri, 28th Sep '01, 1:40pm Headbanger, a dex of 21 is just enough to give you one more AC ;)
20 dex only leads to some range bonus I think, Ragusa probably knows all about this :p
[This message has been edited by Lokken (edited September 28, 2001).]
Ragusa Fri, 28th Sep '01, 3:52pm yes, yes, yes Lokken :p
