I have battled my way through the sphere and I have even escaped from it yet the quest isn't completed! I have read through several guides and all say that I should free Hendak (?) but I don't remember doing that. Can I do it now? I have searched through the sphere and found nothing! Please help me, any hints are welcome! Thanks

Pal, where are details?
First: are you a mage (vulgaris, multi or specialist doesn't matter)?
Second: do you already have another stronghold?
Third: escaped where? To another plane or back to Athkatla?

Anyway, to get Plannar Sphere (I'd rather cube), you must be a mage, you mustn't have another stronghold and you must obtain demon's heart to get back to Athkatla where you'll get the stronghold. Clear?

Yes I am a mage, no I haven't another stronghold and yes I have returned to Athlaka. I have killed a demon and fixed the engine but the journal thinks that I haven't completed the quest or even returned to Athlaka. Therefore I haven't gained controll of a stronghold.
(I saw someone write about that you have to bring Lavrak, or whatever his name is, to the sun. I don't think I have done that and now I can't find him...
By the way, should I have Valygar in my party since he was the one who opened it?

IIRC you can rescue this Hendak in the Coppernet Corner, but that is a different quest and has nothing to do with the Planar Sphere

Now you have clarified some stuff I'm pretty sure that you are screwed up a bit.
When you kill Lavok he asks you for a last favor - to let him die under the sun of the Prime Plane. So when you kill a demon and repower the sphere you have to come back to Lavok and then you are teleported outside and THEN Lavok grants you the sphere as the stronghold.
If you just go outside that means you deny Lavok his wish, and... too bad, the sphere.
If you have a save before the sphere do it again - no big deal. Even if you don't, all the good stuff you can get from the sphere you can get elsewhere (except the Meteor Storm Spell, but you don't actually NEED it).

As it was said before, Hendak, Haegan and Lilarcor ( :D j/k) are a whole different business.

Its been weeks since I tried to do that quest and I'm not going to start all over (well almost). Do I miss anything good when not getting the stronghold?

You don't have to do the whole quest again. Just from the place you face Lavok (so just bring back the Sphere to Athkala and promise Lavok to die under the sun)

I think you can just re-enter the sphere and bring Lavok out into the Sunshine....unless of course you've killed him or taken the wrong dialogue options earlier on.

Apparently (not owned it yet) the mage stronghold is a very good one.

The mage stronghold quests aren't too great... And I found that meteor storm scroll in the elven city.
