View Full Version : A solo player question (Shadow Dragon)
Shrike00 Fri, 1st Jun '01, 9:44pm I am playing a dc Swashbuckler/Cleric. I was a 12th level swash before I switched and I just got back my thieving abilities. I am currently 12/13th level.
I am about to enter the Umar Hills/Shade Lord dungeon. I have been through before and know what to expect. However, I have no idea how to take on the dragon.
I am currently dual wilding the Flail of Ages and the club (Gnasher) +2.
Can anyone give me some ideas on how to tackle the dragon by myself with the class I am. Are there any good protection scrolls I can load up on? Any other help would be nice.
Thanks.
The Grim Ripper Fri, 1st Jun '01, 9:49pm try firing off lower risistance if u have a mage (YOU DO NEED ONE) or a cloud kill, indencery gas when hes in the fog of war (note : u do need lower resistance) and try these:
setting up snares around him
trying some firballs in the fog of war
talking to him and wacking him to death
a prismatic spray
ayecapitan Fri, 1st Jun '01, 10:01pm Wow! A whole lot of unhonourable babble here!

Well, to oppose Thaxll'ssillyia effectively ye need to oppose her methods.
Chaotic commands & protection from negative plane on yerself will save ye from her breath, chaos & (IMO) greater malison.
Her magical protections are an obstacle fer a cleric, but ye have a flail of ages (+3) and it goes through PFMW, as well as does damage through stoneskin (aye, a great clerical tool). Clerics are not good at offensive spellcating at lelev 13, so pray for spells that alter yer physical and pound her with all yer might. (AFAIK, protection from undead scroll will give ye a longer effect that protection from neg. plane)
Captain Spud Fri, 1st Jun '01, 10:06pm i find that setting as many traps as you can in two minutes works well against dragons. all you have to do is set, leave, rest, repeat.
Zorac Fri, 1st Jun '01, 10:07pm The cheesy way would obviously be to wait for level 14 and use finger of death on him. But I never said that.
If you are level 14 you could always use gate to occupy him. I think summoning in general are your best bet. Since you are playing a cleric you should have all the protection you need.
Lothar Fri, 1st Jun '01, 10:38pm First of all, The Grim Ripper was being stupid, especially because his entire post was based on the premise that a mage was in the party, when Shrike expressly stated that he/she was going solo with a swash/cleric.
My recommendation would be to wait another level, and use your animate dead spell to summon skeleton warriors. They will be extremely helpful as they have a number of imunities. Alternatively there is the idea of using Gate, but you have a lot of 3 level spells, and only 1 level 7 spell at level 14. Use one then the other. Regardless, good luck.
kevlar0101 Fri, 1st Jun '01, 11:54pm killing a dragon with traps........weak, you dont even deserve the experience
Lokken Fri, 1st Jun '01, 11:57pm hmm, you have xp-cap? how much further can you raise in levels, for I would say you should wait and then use the traditionel charge... like I always do :D, though I never run solo (must be sooooooo boring in the long run)
Avooch Dar Sat, 2nd Jun '01, 12:01am I kiled The shadow Dragon(which is actually female i think) with my paladin on his own and a little help from a certain sword i obtained from a certain dragon. (trying not to spoil.
Anyway that will be no help so i can only say this. In my opinion i get hold of some potions of speed and then cast holy might on yourself.
You need to get the dragon when the battle first starts and then after her spells have worn off.
Otherwise she has immunity to everything you do and at that level probably won't give you enough time to cast anyspells.
Slappy Sat, 2nd Jun '01, 12:05am Just had to respond to the earlier post that said you mush have pierce magic or whatever to lower his resistance and you couldn't do it without a mage in your party. Well I will agree that a mage does make it easier but as you stated your are a solo cleric/swashbuckler I guess you don't want to go and find a mage to join you just for the dragon. If you are worried about it though, don't be. I am running a party with no magic users at all allowed and am having very little trouble with liches, dragons, demons, golems, flayers, or anything. So don't listen to anyone telling you that you must have a mage - it just ain't true.
PS good luck though doing it solo is a whole other matter (though other posters here have with many different class combinations).
Captain Spud Sat, 2nd Jun '01, 12:23am i was a solo gnome Illusionist\Thief, what else was i supposed to do kevlar?
Tyresian Sat, 2nd Jun '01, 12:52am You could've summoned monsters and used(all pause in amazement) YOUR SPELLS! Or whack it with a stick that you can buy from ribald. Anythings better than trap setting.
Captain Spud Sat, 2nd Jun '01, 1:07am i tried the spell approach and the dragon wasted me after a few rounds. i figure, since i dont get experience for the kills me summoned monsters get, what is the point of summoning? yes, yes, i know, cannonfodder. they take the blows while i cast.
Fine, fine...ill just have to do it again to show that im not a complete idiot.
Tyresian Sat, 2nd Jun '01, 1:08am Since your an illusionist use project image and similacrum. Those are really useful.
Avooch Dar Sat, 2nd Jun '01, 10:46am Hang on he is a cleric. Not an illusionist.
jester1137 Sat, 2nd Jun '01, 11:19am Use death ward. best protection spell you can have against a dragon. it lasts.
And i kind of see this as specific to the shadow dragon, since you have the stone that prevents him from noticing you. If you set the traps and attack immediatly it doesn't seem like a cheat to me, only if you sleep to get more. (It's a dragon, it would notice them in 8 hours. but it's not a god, and doesn't have eyes in the back of it's friggin head)
Other than that, stack all the protections you have from bless to chant to barkskin (still lowers saves by one) you'd be amazed what all those low level prot spells do together.
Also. cast prot from evil and defensive harmony AFTER summoning. I have no idea if you can cast death ward summoned creatures, but give it a try.
Sanctuary should be your best friend here. You can use it to re-new buffs, wait out HIS protection spells, and heal yourself up. As a solo cleric I would be using that spell all the time
