View Full Version : Cheese in BG2
Earl Grey Sat, 21st Apr '01, 7:02pm Go on and post here what you consider to be cheesy in BG2!
Here are a couple of my pet peeves:
- Thieves Set Traps ability
Let me just rest up and set a few more traps and that dragon is history.
- Shield of Balduran (and Cloak of Mirroring)
I'll just stand here and you kill yourselves, ok?
- Quivering Palm
No man, magic resistance doesn't help cause it's not a spell. Look! I place my hand on the dragon like this and he just dies. See?
Ragusa Sat, 21st Apr '01, 8:17pm lol, no one forces you to use this items or abilities, I donīt use them. Itīs totally up to you and your playing style. As long as they enjoy doing it itīs all right. for BG-1/ 2 is a *game* and not a philosophy
Btw, be aware this could turn into a roleplayer-powergamer discussion fast and deadly ...

ayecapitan Sat, 21st Apr '01, 9:54pm Me thought's that thief is more likely to fail the trap and if he/she does set it, I consider it a gift of gods! :)
And reloading each time ye failed (lost a character/ failed a deathblow with the Vorpal Sword) be just like cheating
Cloak Of mirroring only protects ye from damage spells - well, beholders die, and it seems to be it for the nastiest things, like hold/stun/cloudkill(not suren' o' that)/wail of banshee still send ye to the Abyss
Quivering Palm - agreed, bad ability be it
Ironbeard Sat, 21st Apr '01, 10:36pm the set traps ability is fine. The unrealistic aspect comes from resting in dungeons and dragons letting you prepare in the room. there's nothing wrong with running away from a horde of umberhulks then setting a few snares for when they come after you.
Ragusa Sun, 22nd Apr '01, 8:03am I agree Ironbeard, setting traps as part of an ambush for example in a doorway with some skeletons behind to block the enemy onslaught is a valid tactic.
Just send someone in to draw fire and then run back again quickly to lead the enemies following you into the traps and your parties archer fire.
BUT indeed resting in a dragons lair, placing traps, sleep, place more traps, sleep again ... for an easy dragon kill *is* stupid. However, as long as people enjoy doing so ...
Earl Grey Sun, 22nd Apr '01, 10:41am I was trying to rattle the cage a bit. ;)
True, setting traps do not have to be cheesy. It's like with Cloudkill, it can be cheesy if you exploit it in conjunction with the games shortcomings.
(Closing the door and the monsters stand and die, etc)
Enagonios Sun, 22nd Apr '01, 2:28pm Was the set traps ability really THAT good? bec. I went through the whole game not using that ability once... did I really miss out on something big?
Ragusa Sun, 22nd Apr '01, 2:46pm Nothing big but just something handy, however, there are lotīs of alternatives.
Big B Sun, 22nd Apr '01, 4:24pm Dare to be different, or (stupid). I had Nalia cast Vampiric Touch on a Dragon (snuck up from behind while the dragon fought my fighters and cast the spell) It worked! 30 HP, not bad. This was of course after Aerie cast Lower Resistance.
Big Bad Bert Mon, 23rd Apr '01, 12:53pm Set traps is a great ability and one that I also didn't use 1st time through. With 3 traps set and a few enemies around I've hit them for way over 100 points of damage on a few occasions.
I must admit though that I'm not too sure that hitting all enemies with one trap is too realistic. Also enemies don't have to be that close to set them off.
Deano99 Mon, 23rd Apr '01, 1:14pm i think that Set traps is okay as long as it used right
i think it's good if someone has bothered to Hide in the Shadows and check what's ahead of them, set a few traps, and lured his enemies into a death trap. But using them on Dragons is another thing...
and i use Cloudkill regularly, but not straight into the fog of war when i don't have to worry. I use it on large groups of enemies, like it is actually meant for. Geeze!
Hayashi Tue, 24th Apr '01, 4:15am Brie, cheddar, swiss, mozarella, parmesan, ementhal... ;)
ayecapitan Tue, 24th Apr '01, 4:36am Catti-brie? :)
Blackthorne TA Tue, 24th Apr '01, 4:48am All right you bozos enough of that...
Enagonios Tue, 24th Apr '01, 5:38am Dean: I like to cast cloud kill in the fog of war area in front of me if there are enemies close together ;) In Mae'var's guild I cast 3 cloudkills and left them there. After a while I cast 2 fireballs ;) When I went in to pick up the pieces everyone was already dead :D
-When a trick works, it's no longer cheap-
Ragusa Tue, 24th Apr '01, 9:50am What a waste, tsstsss <shakehead> *Iīd* save that spell for dangerous enemies like dragons ... and irritating ones like orc/ kobold/ goblin herds ... :D

TIN_MAN Tue, 24th Apr '01, 10:14am I could finish the game without using traps.
They are very useful, but they make the killing more easier. Cloudkill is fine, works wonders in Nalia's keep against the Umber Hulks. It isn't a cheat that time casting it into the fog of war, because you can have information about the Umber Hulks from the conversation of Nalia and Daelson.
Ragusa Tue, 24th Apr '01, 11:33am Hmmmmmmmm - I donīt quite think so, you can only attack an enemy fair when youīve at least seen him/ it with your own eyes ... THATīS WHAT THIEVES AND RANGERS ARE THERE FOR! Or this magic eye spell ... unless you do so ... call it whatever you like ... <grumbles ito his nonexistent beard>
Enagonios Tue, 24th Apr '01, 11:55am That's what I meant Rag, after I scout the front with the ring of invisibility :p
Earl Grey Tue, 24th Apr '01, 12:52pm Yep, there are times when I tell my thief:
I have a bad feeling about the area just ahead. Do you think you can hide and scout it out for us? ;)
That thief has started to trust my instincts (yeah, right!) by now...
Oh, the benefits of having played the game before. :D
TIN_MAN Tue, 24th Apr '01, 1:02pm Yes, yes!
You guys are absolutely right.
Having a thief in the party is always coming handy. BUT, when scouting you can use rangers too, like Minsc.
I always keep a rouge in my party.
