It depends on your class.

Red Dragon scale --- The best armor.
Shadow Dragon Armor ---> For those who can't use plate armor, like thieves.
Robe of Vecna ---> For mages.

I can't see how any Drow armor can be considered when deciding on the best armor in the game since you can only use it for a very small part of the game.

True but I couldn't come up with anny other armors. Now that i think of it robes are armors also. But what is the difference between Robe of good Archmagi and Robe of Vecna?

My pick is the one of a thief
Best - the +5 leather, The Night's Gift
Second - Shadow Scales (just for AC maniacs, I always use the first)
Third - Elven Chainmail (something about that shimmering green color makes me wear this particular suit :))

Oh well...

fighters:
1.) Red Dragon scales AC -1 considered as non magical(can use rings with it)
2.) Armor of the Heart AC -2 but magical
3.) The Pride of The legion AC -1 but only paladins can get it

thieves:
1.) Shadow Dragon scale AC 1 +50% res. to acid
2.) The night's gift +5 AC 3 +20% hide in shadows
3.) Shadow armor AC 4 +15% hide in shadows

drow stuff excluded :D ;) :

-fighters - pride of the legion (field plate +2 - lightest one of the three), armor of the heart & red dragon scale

-thiefs - shadow dragon scale, night´s gift, elven chain +4

-mages - robe of vecna, gives you improved spellcasting speed (-4 on spellcasting initiative) and 10% magic resistance.

-brac of AC 3 are nice for all classes, but especially mages and druids

I think all of you are forgetting the Human Flesh+5 for a thief. I think (although my memory is not perfect)it's better than the night's gift.

I agree - the human flesh is a must for every *evil* thief. I tend to forget about it for I usually play good.

My favourites are

1. Red Dragon scale, the non-magic thing is great.
2. Gorgon Plate, IMHO the best platemail armour.
3. Robe of Vecna, less casting time is very useful
