View Full Version : BG-2 manual and XP - based thieving ability points

After dear Zaragoth pointed out that I was in fact wrong about the bountyhunters thieving abilities, I tried to find out why.

I created a halfling thief in BG-1 (to allow comparison of the kits with the same basic char) and imported him to BG-2 as a plain thief/ assassin and bounty hunter.
The stats are: str-14/ *dex-17*/ con-10/ int-13/ wis-13/ chr-10. I will display my calculations so you can check them for errors and compare them to your manuals.

In BG-2 a *plain* thiefs abilities are built up as follows. First they get *class, race and dex-related* thieving ability points:

1. The thief always receives the same class specific base thief skills in BG-2:
-pick pockets: 15%
-open locks: 10%
-find & disarm traps: 5%
-move silent: 10%
-hide in shadows: 5%
-detect illusions & set traps are all ZERO

2. Now the race boni for the thief, a halfling for example, are added.

3. Then the dex boni are added (dex-17).

At this point the char is imported to BG-2 and you can spend all the *experience based* thievery points as you like:

4. At first level the thief receives a 40 (!) points to distribute on his thieving abilities (the manuals tells 30) -> see below.

5. Later he just receives 25 (!) points per level do distribute on his thieving abilities (the manual tells 20). Bounty hunters get 20 points per level and assassins do get 15 points per level. -> see below.

So my test-thief's looked like that when I imported them @ lvl-8 into BG-2:

-plain thief & swashbuckler: 215 points to distribute at import. This means: x = base points @ lvl-1 + level-up points for 7 levels.
In numbers: 215 = x + (7x25), so x = 40 (number of points to spend @ lvl-1)

-assassin: 145 points to distribute at import. This means: x = base points @ lvl-1 + level-up points for 7 levels.
In numbers: 145 = x + (7x15), so x = 30 (?! like in BG-1 ?!) (number of points to spend @ lvl-1)

-bountyhunter: 180 points to distribute at import. This means: x = base points @ lvl-1 + level-up points for 7 levels.
In numbers: 180 = x + (7x20), so x = 40 (number of points to spend @ lvl-1)
[The fact that he gets additional 15 points right from the start in set traps is irrelevant for the calculation.]

My conclusion:
Obviously some of the thievery data were basically taken over from BG-1 unchecked.
The ability tables themselves (regarding dex, race, start points per skill and armor) as displayed in the manual are correct.

Wrong in the manual are the data regarding the points a thief can spend at lvl-1 and the following levels. They were simply taken over from BG-1 as the numbers 30 base + 20 per level indicate. There was no info about the bountyhunter except that his thieving abilities are inferior to a pure thief ones.

So, following wrong 1. level-up points & follow-on level-up points I miscalculated the total ability scores. This was the reason for the error Zaragoth found in the "why thieves rule" table - it will be fixed soon :)

Hehe, you´re really into thieves, eh? :)
Other than that little mistake, I could not find any wrongs. Good work, Ragusa ;) It was acctually your "Why thieves rule" that inspired me to play as a thief. thx.
