Can Valgyar backstab? I know that I've recieved the "weapon not suitable for backstabing" from him before, but even using weapons that ARE suitable, I've never been able to get him to backstab.

Am I missing something?

His personal katana doesn't work because of a bug that says its not suitable for thieves to use. Switch him over to a different magic Katana and he should be fine.

Hmm, I'm pretty sure that I HAVE tried that before.

I've certainly tried the +2 short sword. But now that I think of it, I might have been dual weilding at the time. Would that effect anything?

Can you backstab with Dual Wield on?

I think so... Try the celestial fury ;) .

Try putting something else in his MAIN hand and his own sword in the offhand. You usually hit with the main hand first. BTW, he's just as limited as a thief as to what he can backstab with.
