Most likely you've fought one of these somewhere in SoA before. I ran into a group of them and was turning them with my evil cleric and gained control of them. I've never seen these guys cast spells but they get spells and here's what they get:
-5 Magic Missile
-5 Mirror Image
-2 Fireball
-1 Hold Person
-2 Lightning
-2 Dimension Door
-2 Polymorph Other
-1 Animate Dead
-1 Chaos
-1 Cloudkill
-1 Monster Summoning III
-1 Shadow Door
-1 Flesh To Stone
-1 Globe of Invulnerability
-1 Invisible Stalker
Kind of took me by surprise since I've never seen these guys cast anything. Anyone else seen them casting spells?
Note: they look like shadows but they're called wraiths or greater wraiths.

I thought the only thing they did was level drain.
