View Full Version : Where are those special arrows?
wittynewt Thu, 15th Nov '01, 11:40am Hi,
Well the previous archer versus kensai disussions got me thinking (dangerous I know :D )
Are there any arrows of detonation in the game? You could buy them in BG1, but I have never found them in SOA/TOB and I think I have checked everywhere, including all vendors up to chapter 8 TOB (haven't finished the game with my first party yet...)
An archer armed with these could do some serious damage, 6d6, save for half, would make a big dent in an enemy. If you are a damage junkie then imagine 10 arrows of dentonation per round, whirlwinded archer,
equals 30 min - 360 max points without considering any class or wpn damage bonuses, add in the 1d6 for the arrow and the bow and class wpn damage and suddenly that jumps to 110-490 points, for an lvl 12 archer armed with strongarm. Of course, the minor flaw is that there would probably be nothing left to target after firing say the fifth arrow :D
Also, I have found about 11 arrows of dispelling throughout the game, very useful, precision dispelling, but have not found any vendor who sells them. Anyone found a vendor?
Cheers,
WittyNewt.
Ragusa Thu, 15th Nov '01, 12:12pm IIRC the arrows of detonation are random items. I finally found 2 of them in one game (1st one: forgotten; 2nd one on a dead ogre mage in the systhillian fight (pally-char quest) - only to not find them again in my next game :( I found them so pretious I carried them around the whole game for a good opportunity - and I wasn't even using them vs. Irenicus' :D
Almost the same for arrows of dispelling: They are at some fixed locations in the game, including spellhold, but I don't know where exactly.
Arrows of biting: about 20 of them can be found in the planar prison. Some more in Atkathla but I actually forgot where.
As for all the other special arrows: arrows of fire/ acid/ piercing/ +1/ +2 etc can be found at a lot of traders in Atkathla. The female nighttime trader in the slums has plenty of fire arrows though (40 stacks iirc). The trader inside Gaelan's house has some special arrows as well, just like the fatmen in the CC and on the podest in waukeen's promenade, not to mention Ribald

wittynewt Thu, 15th Nov '01, 1:48pm Hi,
Thanks Ragusa. I can't remember where I found my arrows of dispelling but same as you "spellhold" rings a bell.
Shame about the detonation ones. In my sixth time through BG1 I visited the Sundries vendor (I think he sells them) and spent like 15,000 GP on loads of them. Used them all the time from sewers to game end. Got boring actually but the firework display was nice. :D
On a missile related note, one thing I found really useful my first time through was the kua toa bolt. When used against my party they never paralysed but when I used them with keldorn he was paralysying lots of enemies, seemed to be especially excellent against mind flayers and vampires.

The only time I remember finding Arrows of Detonation was off of the party of Orcs, Ogre Mages, and Ettins that you fight in the Umar Hills when you are a Paladin working on your stronghold quest. A good screenshot of this battle was sent in by Ragusa and is in the Screenshot of the Week Archives ;).
The Arrows of Dispelling in Spellhold are on the level that you fight Jon Irenicus in. They are in a crate/barrel in the corner of a room on the outer north-east wall. (If you drew a line from the stairs going up and the Underdark Portal, the room with Irenicus and the fight would be to the left of that "line" and the Arrows of Dispelling Room would be to the right of that "line".)

Demonater351 Thu, 15th Nov '01, 4:59pm If you got a lot of cash, try this: go to Waukeen's Promenade. Find the merchant Arnolinus (that's the grumpy dwarven armor) He's on the same side of the market as the Adventure Mart, only a couple of tiers above it. (Look on the map, it should be marked as "Armorer/Fletcher") In the same room as him is a fletcher named Perter. He will sell two sets of 40 Arrows of Dispelling for about 18000 gold each. You can also buy other special arrows from him. But I've never heard of Arrows of Detonation. I'm gonna have to find me some.
Love them Arrows of Dispelling though. Bought me some a while back, and only use them in really dire situations.

wittynewt Thu, 15th Nov '01, 6:34pm Hi,
Excellent! thanks for the tip. I know exactly where you are talking about but I never noticed the second chap. Great purchase just before going to spellhold.

creudzfeldt-jakob Fri, 16th Nov '01, 2:50am Personally, I don't think that the arrows of dispelling are that useful. When you have dispel magic (especially with an inquistor :) ), they overpower the arrows of dispelling because it's area effect. Carsomyr and SotM have dispel on hit.
Why burn 18000 gp on only 40 arrows that don't even do that much damage and have little effect?
Big B Fri, 16th Nov '01, 2:52am Easy, you buy them when you don't have an inquisitor, or even a mage or a cleric. BG2 caters to your solo needs. If you want to solo as an Archer, you're going to be very glad that this option is available to you.
Demonater351 Fri, 16th Nov '01, 7:16am I would readily shell out 18000 GP for 40 arrows. As I said, I only use them when other means have failed. 40 arrows last me for almost the entire game! :)
wittynewt Fri, 16th Nov '01, 8:54am Hi,
The key thing for me about the arrows is that they only dispel magic on the target.
Precision dispelling. I think they dispel at the level of the firer.
Keldorns dispel is great but is an area effect like the mage spell and it dispels everything, including all of your parties protections if you are not careful.
I find them most useful for dispelling those confusion/domination/fear etc type spells that might effect a party member. Easy to target them and dispel the problem spell and not effect anything else. Try targetting a fear effected party member remove fear or keldorns dispel while they are running around at full pelt, easy with the arrows.
I also used them on an enemy mage when I had run out of breaches once, worked fine.
Cheers,
WittyNewt
