I am a fighter / thief in Baldurs Gate1, and I have 2 points in small swords and 2 in missile weapons. I thought that any character besides a pure fighter can only have a maximum of 2 proficiencies, so I added the other in bows without even checking. Later on I saw that Coran has 3 in large swords...does this mean that I could have put the extra into short swords for a total of 3? Did I completely screw my character? Thanks for any comments. (I'll be playing BG2 soon, don't worry.)

Screwed? Nahhh - not hardly. As you continue to level up, you gradually gain more proficiency stars/slots. I have preferred to spread my slots around, though, allowing my character at least some proficiency in several different kinds of weapons. The alternative is to become a super-mega master in one kind of weapon,(say, a short sword) and ending up smashing in your own head with a nice Flail of the Ages or lopping off a few fingers with Belm 'cuz you didn't know which end to hold onto ... Best o' luck!
