View Full Version : Women
SparkTheGreat Thu, 16th Aug '01, 9:34pm I believe that most women are not into violence.
If an infinity game was created with a much stronger romantic side all people would enjoy the wonders of the Planescape world.
Many more sales

Lazy Bonzo Thu, 16th Aug '01, 9:43pm Thank you again Spark. There wasn't actually the scope for more than 2 romances. Although torment was the pioneer (sp) or rather guinea pig of the romances in BG2. However women are not neglected in torment as the 2 most powerful characters are female.
SparkTheGreat Thu, 16th Aug '01, 9:48pm Yes bnzo.
You should have realised that the romance in Torment is very shallow and a bit boring. Romance being a key role and maybe as a way of gaining information would mean that there is no point in actually spending all that time on a wiked game like Torment.
The romance in Torment were good enought and I dont really care anyway...

Lazy Bonzo Thu, 16th Aug '01, 9:52pm Your right torment is wiked. But as i already said torment was the trial run for BG2's romances. They tested them on it because torment seems to have been EXPECTED to flop and was given bad advertising as a result.
SparkTheGreat Thu, 16th Aug '01, 10:06pm I agree.
Torment's advertising gave misleading information.
Spark
Lazy Bonzo Thu, 16th Aug '01, 10:10pm The bad advertising was also due to the fact that torment was released 2 months before it was due. It is one of the reasons so many quests which were being left out still have conversations towards them.
Taluntain Thu, 16th Aug '01, 10:54pm Is it just me or do I hear echos in here?
Shoshino Thu, 16th Aug '01, 11:29pm when talking about the women in planescape, u have to remember that u are dealing with a whole new world, they have been treated and brought up differently, violence maybe a way of life
Sprite Fri, 17th Aug '01, 1:03pm I don't think better-developed romances would help attract women to CPRGs particularly- most women would probably be very self-conscious having a "pretend" romance with the computer since this is one of the "guy" activities women giggle about while men make fun of our sappy chick movies.
I think Torment is *already* a good game to introduce women to the genre, because it involves true role playing and a minimum of hack and slash. You can solve problems by sitting back and thinking about them, or by negotiating with the enemy. Try that in, say, Icewind Dale and you'll find your negotiations are interrupted by your party blowing up. But this is a very female way to solve problems, necessarily so since in the real world most women can't outfight male opponents so our communications skills have to compensate.
It is also a highly verbal game- you have to be comfortable reading a lot, which generally comes to females at a younger age than males.
I can see a spectrum of thinking on RPGs at Black Isle where the range from "true" role playing to "hack and slash" seems to go: Torment, BG1, BG2, TOSC, TOB, Icewind Dale. Maybe it's normal for expansion packs to be more shoot-em-up given that they are limited in scope. Anyway, my point is, the games on the left-hand side of the spectrum are most likely to appeal to women for the reason I've mentioned above, and the games and expansion packs on the right hand side are much less likely to. In my opinion, anyway- but Black Isle/Interplay may have realised that with Torment they were playing to a niche audience: highly verbal, communication-oriented, imaginative role players with excellent English skills. And given the current market for CPRGs, this audience must mostly be found among the male population. Frankly, the market for games where little boys of all ages can hack things to death for hours is no doubt larger. Alas.

Firestorm Fri, 14th Sep '01, 7:42pm I dont think you are right Spark, I think that the romance with Annah is way better than any of those you could have in BGII.
I think its better 'cause theres a whole lot more dialogue, which I love (and i am a male, so your theory doesnt work for everybody, Sprite, fx I hated IWD (still played it twice though :D ))
I think that there are many feelings involved in PS:T compared to BGII. So thats why i consider it to better (albeit harder)
Lazy Bonzo Sat, 15th Sep '01, 1:08pm And of course annah is way fitter than any of those chicks in BG2.
Big B Sat, 15th Sep '01, 4:44pm Perhaps you are just saying that becuase she is the most scantly clad of them all? ;)
