Freewriting Drunk at 2am

Posted Sat, 7th Jul '12 at 10:18am by Dice

Well I thought this might be an interesting experiment. I will give myself 10 minutes to write whatever is on my mind as a free-writing exercise with the added bonus of me being inebriated. It should be a learning experience.

---------

I like it but its not good for me. Exactly 2am in the morning and I've decided to construct an experiment out of being drunk on vodka and ice-tea. Not real ice-tea but the powder that you mix with water. Very refreshing.

Vodka. I guess it is my choice. Maybe because it is clear and it goes with anything you want including coffee. At Christmas holidays time I drink alcohol in my morning coffee but that is the only time that I will allow myself to drink in the morning.

Frogs. Although it may seem a sudden transition from coffee to frogs it really isn't if you know that I was thinking about them before. There is a lot of worry about amphibians in the world ecological circles. The frogs are dying. I was very glad to see at least 10 frogs on different occasions and two toads. The toads are my favorite because they are actually cute. I mean last weekend and not in my whole life because I've seen a lot more frogs and toads in my entire life.

Its good to go deep into nature if you want to go deep into yourself. I know I choose wild places to sort out my problems. At least to relax my thoughts and remember that every person is essentially a wild animal. We are all unique and live in our own world that we interact through the vessel of our body.

I wonder if I should be worrying about the quality of my writing at this moment. It is funny the thoughts you have when you have a higher alcohol level in your blood. I think they are the same thoughts you normally have but they are magnified and become more significant somehow.

-----------------------------

Ok 10 minutes are up. I'm not sure how successful this experiment was but at least it should teach myself something . Possibly that it is silly to write blog entries drunk at 2am. But tell me WHY NOT! I mean come on - you live one time so you might as well fill it with as many experiences as possible.

I'm thinking this freewriting thing kind of jumped over the time limit.

OK, sorry for that ^ unless you found it entertaining Which btw I did so I guess since its my blog and I entertained myself at least that is something.

I imagine the frogs, toads and salmanders will recover from the fungus problem eventually.

Drunk anything is always entertaining since you will do and say things that you would normally be too inhibited to say openly.

Lol I think I was avoiding topics that had any real pull for me. So actually I was still inhibited by purposefully avoiding hot topics.
As far as the results go I think the writing was kind of boring. I'm glad to hear that the amphibians are not all going to die btw BT The next time I do freewriting I'll try and have a focus I think. Also I may not be drunk .

Okay. You've convinced me. I definitely need to try drunk free-writing! And, while it may not be a great story (i.e. for publication), I think you still got some interesting things out that might make it into such a thing (the toad/frog thing, the alcohol making thoughts more significant thing, the everyone is a wild creature thing, etc.) All of that can end up in your writing.

What I mean is that (Okay, note: I'm also inebriated right now) I wasn't very clear on the *purpose* of freewriting in my other post. It's not really to write exciting stuff. Because goodness knows, if we just write our thoughts without restrictions, well, they're what we listen to ALL the FREAKING TIME!!! So, of course, it's often boring to us.

Personally, I didn't find your freewriting boring at all. I found it really quirky and interesting. You have a way of saying things that are unusual, and thus, (crap) interesting. The image of all of us being wild animals will actually probably stick with me quite awhile. It was a really interesting (gah!) image. Put into the right story, and it could really (forgive the cliche) pack a punch.

But don't avoid hot topics when freewriting! And focus is often good, especially if you're trying to get ideas for a story or need to get unblocked.

Ok thats pretty cool Vorona. Drunk response to drunk freewriting.

Actually I kind of had the idea that I should write on one topic in a legitimate freewriting experiment but at the time (when I was inebriated) I figured I could change the rules because I was drunk. Or maybe I decided I had less rules.

My choice to avoid hot topics was made just for here because I felt since it is a public forum I probably don't need to go sharing too much. If I'm writing for myself its an entirely different matter.

Good luck with your own drunk free-writing if you decide to try it. Remember, even if your experiment fails, most the fun is in getting there.

I guess I just wondered why you didn't just write what you wanted and then worried about posting it afterwards (or wait until you had one that would work).

    But hey, whatever works!

And even if you do pick a topic to focus on, you'll often go off topic if you let yourself write as fast as you think. It's perfectly normal to start on one topic (ideas for poems) and end up somewhere completely different (like Timbuktu).

See there you go - you were wondering why I didn't write what I wanted and then worried about the posting after. That is exactly the point. (For myself ) I had decided when I wrote it that I wouldn't edit it - except for spelling grammar which drives me crazy if I don't fix it.

That was part of the exercise for me.

Huh? What was the point? What I'm understanding is that when you started writing, you knew you were going to post it, so you avoided hot topics. Is that right? If so, I don't understand what you mean by that being the point. Or do you mean that you just wrote what you wanted and edited out the hot topics? (But I'm not sure how that fits with your decision not to edit it). Or you just wrote what you wanted and there just happened not to be any hot topics, so you decided it was okay to post (which was what I was trying to suggest)? In other words, you didn't specifically limit yourself away from hot topics so much as deciding that if there were any, you weren't going to post it.

When I wrote my blog entry I had basically decided that I was writing it as an experiment. Part of the experiment had to do with the fact I had consumed alcohol. Inebriation being a significant factor of how my writing was affected made me make the decision not to edit what I wrote. Because I knew I was not going to edit what I wrote, I decided to avoid hot topics.

Okay - so the freewrite itself happened in the blog? Not before posting. That makes sense now! Especially in light of the inebriation .
