Eighth Dimension: #96 An Authentic RPG

Posted Mon, 24th Jan '11 at 6:31pm by 8people (8 Tales)

After reading the article on The Authentic RPG and its Demise I feel a strange need to consolidate the genre.

More choice! More open ended! More player interaction with the characters and settings!

And I find myself wondering - how much choice is too much choice? A dark and brooding loner may be a compelling character to play but if the main storyline is about a happy chirpy group working together like a big happy family then the character is forced to evolve beyond...

Eighth Dimension: #95 Fun With Study Support

Posted Fri, 14th Jan '11 at 6:29pm by 8people (8 Tales)

Had a long meeting at university today.

I think the meeting was only meant to be half an hour but ended up taking almost two. As it turns out I *am* getting Disabled Students Allowance but the local council didn't think it was necessary to inform either me or my university about it. Why? Because I was assessed for it three years ago at a different university so there was no need for an update. Aside from the fact that when applying there were calls and requests for an update due to...

Cane and Able: #21 A Miracle?

I don't believe this has been brought up on SP before... but perhaps if it sparks interest the Alley might be a place to pop it.

Personally? I think this is fantastic. Perhaps not for the most obvious reasons.

For one, I have seen several families torn apart by misunderstanding, tragedy within the family and being financially, mentally and...

Cane and Able: #20 Standards

Posted Sat, 8th Jan '11 at 6:24pm by 8people (8 Tales)

It appears the Pain Clinic local to me has exceptional standards for allowing in the riff raff. I made an appointment in November for February (There are waiting lists for these exclusive clinics beyond reasonable) and it appears yesterday they sent a letter to inform me that I do not meet their criteria!

I'm sorry, but a clinic set up to deal with LONG TERM PAIN MANAGEMENT is rejecting someone who has had painful dislocations since she was nine months old and been on prescription...

Warriors at the Gate: #35 Deception

Posted Wed, 22nd Dec '10 at 10:48am by 8people (8 Tales)

Is deception in games a bad thing? Obfuscating a mechanical component to illustrate something that would be out of character knowledge if it was revealed?

The problem however comes from revelation. What if, for example, the hidden thing was race? Mechanically the character would have to respond as what the race really was (For example against a blade that did extra damage to shifters) but after the fact was revealed they were a therianthrope or a shifter the text in the profile would...
