USB DSO: Final Form & Data Captures

Posted Fri, 20th Apr '12 at 9:25pm by Blackthorne TA

Here are a few pics of the finished and buttoned up enclosure and a few screen caps of the Oscilloscope software I wrote with the Oscilloscope hooked up to a waveform generator at various waveforms and frequencies.

Here's the enclosed project without the oscilloscope probe from the top:

USB DSO: The Enclosure

Posted Tue, 10th Apr '12 at 4:34am by Blackthorne TA

Given my DIY nature as seen in the development of this project so far, you should be able to guess that I would design and fabricate the enclosure myself as well.

I decided to build it in two parts from sheet aluminum, bending the sides with a box brake.

Here is the design of the two halves:

The right side is the bottom half and the left is the top....

USB DSO: The Populated PCB

Posted Sat, 31st Mar '12 at 6:11am by Blackthorne TA

So who wants to see the PCB populated with parts?

Well first, how about a picture of the workstation I used for soldering? I did it all by hand, and since much of the soldering is on a submillimeter scale, I used the magnifying lamp the whole time.

For the vias (connection from one side of the board to the other) I used a very thin wire (wire wrap wire) through the...

USB DSO: The Etched PCB

Posted Tue, 27th Mar '12 at 4:25am by Blackthorne TA

Now that the PCB has been designed, how do you get that design onto a solid PCB with the traces made of copper?

Well there are several ways, including paying a specialty house to do it for you, but if you have a standard black and white laser printer handy, PCB Fab in a Box has a nifty package to let you do it in the ease and comfort of your own home. The most important part of the package is the special paper that has a water-soluble coating.

So to use this system...

USB DSO: The PCB Design

So, what's next now that the circuit design is complete? Well, you need some way of actually constructing the circuit in the real world, and these days that means surface mount parts and a printed circuit board or PCB.

Diptrace which was the tool I used for the design schematics, also includes a very nice PCB design tool that integrates directly with the schematics. So it lets you place all the parts and route all the traces in a very intuitive manner.

Since I wanted...
