USB DSO: The Front End Design

Posted Sun, 18th Mar '12 at 11:45pm by Blackthorne TA

So, what does the front end of a DSO do?

It takes the analog signal to be measured and manipulates it via buffering, attenuation, and amplification to the level range accepted by the ADC on the back end. And since I wanted to be able to use a standard x1, x10 oscilloscope probe, it needed to have an input resistance of 1M ohm.

If you remember from the back end design, the ADC I chose had an input range between 2 and 3 volts; in other words a 1 volt peak to peak signal...

USB DSO: The Back End Design

What exactly is the back end of my USB DSO, and how does it do what it does?

Put simply, it is the digital part of the DSO after the analog signal to be measured has been conditioned and readied for sampling. It includes the USB connection so it can be connected to a computer for both the power source and interfacing, a SoC to handle the control of everything and any necessary processing, an analog to digital converter (ADC) to digitize the analog signal coming in, a trigger circuit...

USB DSO: The Beginning

Posted Thu, 15th Mar '12 at 5:37am by Blackthorne TA

I suppose some of you are wondering just what the heck you were looking at in my first blog post. Briefly - for now - it is the schematic for the back end of a Universal Serial Bus Digital Storage Oscilloscope that I designed and built.

USB most of you must be familiar with, having computers and all to visit this site. An Oscilloscope for those unfamiliar with the world of electronic diagnostics is a tool used to capture and display voltage waveforms over time. The "digital...
