Setting up BG2: SoA multiplayer

Howdy all, this is my first post and as so far I haven't trawled the forum to see if this answer exsists anywhere else.

This is my question. I have had Baldur's gate 2 Shadows of amn for quite a while now and a friend of mine aquired it recently and we want to play the game together through multiplayer. The problem is that for any connection medium we try the response on my friends computer is `cannot connect to game session`. He can't even host a game. I have looked on Bioware's site and it goes on about ports and IP adressess but do I have to get complicated with systems or is their something blatantly obvious we're missing?

Are you both on the same LAN and subnet, or are you in different locations communicating through firewalls?
