Default High Texture Mod

So I ordered DAO for my PC and wonder if the high texture mod is worth it after the latest patch? Thoughts?

My favorite texture mod is JB3textures. You need a fair amount of vram though. Also make sure you use CFF explorer or some such to increase the games ram usage to 4 GB.

Any idea on how to extract the first two files. I am running into issues with the first two files.

As for VRAM mine is set to 1/2 of my system RAM. My system has 12GB of RAM, so with VRAM my PC has 18GB of RAM. Is that enough RAM? I hope so...

With VRAM I mean your video ram (your graphics cards memory), not your virtual memory.

12GB is more than enough as Dragon Age can at most use 4GB, and that is only when you patch it using CFF Explorer (which you really should do if you haven't yet ).

Hmmm it's a part file (hence the 001 ending of the file's name) so maybe it cannot open unless the rest of the parts are there? It looks like one ore more files are missing from the download page. A quick skim through the comments section gave me a link to the second part (you can find it here), which I'm downloading now to see if I can decompress it then.

UPDATE: Yep that fixed it. I suggest you download both 001 and 002 anew. Put them in the same folder and then open 001 and begin extracting it and it should automatically extract the contents of 002 as well (the extracted folder should be 1,03GB in size).
When I use winrar to open 001 it says the archive is corrupt, however. But when I use 7zip it decompresses it without any problems. So if you're using WinRAR I suggest you get 7-Zip (it is also a 7z archive).

When you install the mod I suggest you place the entire JB3 folder in your override folder. That way you can quickly uninstall it if you encounter any problems.

I tried 7zip and IZarc and both said the file was corrupt. I will try it again tonight to see what happens. Thanks for the info.

As for Video memory, I have 2GB Nvidia GTX 560m card in my Asus G74 best buy model laptop. I hope that is more than enough video memory...

Extract was a success...Since I don't see an override folder in package section, one can be created and that should work, am I right in my logic?

The override folder should be within the 'core' subfolder under packages. So if there isn't one I'd assume you can just make it. It's a bit odd though, since I'm sitting with a clean install of Dragon Age: Origins here and it has the override folder.

Are you looking in the install folder or the 'My Documents' folder? Truth be told I don't know if there's any difference between placing it in either folder, but mods usually recommend that you place mods in the "C:\Users\<USER>\Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age\packages\core\override" (path might slightly change depending on which version of the game and windows you are using) folder so I'd go for that.

Played DAO a bit this weekend with the high texture mod; prior to figuring out how to get it all installed, I played it without the mod. I see some improvements but nothing to say OMG that made a difference, at least not yet so far. The mod does make the game look prettier in some aspects. As for DAO visual comparison, DAO on the PC looks better than the PS3. How much better, about 15-25% better.

I still prefer to play DAO on the PS3. I just like the feel of a controller in my hand.

Glad you got it working.

Yeah it's not going to make DAO jawdroppingly beautiful all of a sudden. But I think there may only be so much you can do with the textures.

Its most noticeable on stuff like wagons, which are very low resolution in vanilla.

Does it improve armors at all? I did the two armor texture pack for DAO and the expansions. What armors are impacted by those mods?

Yes it does. Or at least it should. You can check out a before/after comparison under image at the mods nexus page.
I think it fixes all the armors, though you mustn't hold me to that... It's been ages since I last played this game .

Have you applied all of the updates?

I applied all of the texture updates and than followed it up with the 2 armor texture fixes..

Are there any other mods besides textures that add to the main game?

What do you mean? If there's other texture mods, besides JB3textures, that adds to the main game? Or just other mods in general (like armor mods and stuff like that)?

I prefer to keep the game within the developers scope other than visual improvements or mods that improve the cut scenes. Other acceptable mods are ones that add to the main plot story such as an additional origin story (dalish mage) that was never developed or was not implemented or a new NPC where the modder was able to create good voice over in the game...
