Strength spells vs strength items?

Hi guys my first post here is a question.

I have mazzy in my party and she has the girdle that provides her with strenght 19. But when i have her throw her strenght spell on herself her strenght goes down to 18/00 BUT her base thac0 drops like 3 points from 7 to 4. Why is that??

The strength spell overrides your current strength and sets it to 18/00. So even if you're a half-orc with 19 str, casting a strength spell on you will set your strength to 18/00. Basically, the strength spell is only useful if you have low strength.

Your THAC0 bonus is related to your strength. So if your strength is lowered, your THAC0 will go down as well.

The THAC0 should have stayed the same with only a 1 point drop in damage.

19 -- +3 to hit, +7 damage
18(00) -- +3 to hit, +6 damage

henkie -- I think you've got it backwards ... a low THAC0 is better (pluses to hit were added to the roll in pnp, they are subtracted from THAC0 in the game). Interesting that the THAC0 is being improved the exact amount for the girdle or spell. I didn't think they would be cummulative. Are there any other spells active? Do you have any other strength items?
