Okay - I haven't been to GNR, or been to probably half the places on the map yet, and while trotting around the wastes, I just happen to find where my Dad is....I ended up re-loading the game to entering the place where he is so I can come back nearer to the end (?) and get him; or at the very least follow some of the clues to find him.

So far it's been the only really unstatisfy part of this game...

Thats a known problem. If you explore to
    Cassey's garage
it breaks the main quest, skipping over the first part and a large section of the storyline and backstory.

My advice? Try and forget you ever found that place.

There are a few other places it can happen to:
Don't talk to the scientists in Rivet City until directed to and don't go to the Jefferson Memorial, and you should probably avoid Vault 87 or explore Little Lamplight, and anywhere called Raven Rock. I've never tried it with those last ones, but they seem to me like possibilities.

Basically, you can trigger plot events ahead of time just by going to the places that they occur.

    The location
    Raven Rock
Isn't any danger to the story. Nothing CAN happen there until a story event is triggered, so don't worry that much (yes, I've tested this :) )

i don't find that so annoying, in my first game I skipped Three Dog and it still made sense to me.

This will certainly encourage some freaks to go for extra quick speed runs...

Still it is a issue you have to think about. Close the place down until you have triggered the place will make the game linear. It was perhaps the 5'th place I found. I choose to go on.

In the Survivor's Guide Manual the game came with, it said you can rush right off to find dad, or not. It's your game. Do it how you want. Although I did reload my game and went to the place where dad is, I didn't enter the building...
