After installing Fallout 2 I can't play the game. I can get onto the intro screen but when I try and play the game I get the message: "Running Fallout2 requies the CD!".
This is a bit of a pain since the CD is correctly in the drive, the CD is clean and not damaged.
I can even get to the intro screen by accessing it on the CD (autoplay or by double clicking the fallout2.exe). I am using Windows XP Home edition with SP2. Any help would be appreciated

That's especially odd, considering I have Fallout 2 and it doesn't require the CD to play. Do the complete install of the game(600MB) and then patch it if you already haven't and see if that problem still comes up.

Yeh done that, there is a patch on the CD that installs with it. I checked the version of the patch and it is the most up to date one. I even downloaded it again and installed it but I still got the CD requied message.

I got Fallout 2 to play on Windows 2000 a few years ago but I can't remember if the CD was needed to play it.

I have tried the compatibility mod with Win 95 and Win 2000 and still no luck.

Have you tried using a cd-fix?

Well, since you installed the humongous install of the game and it still doesn't work, it looks like this could be an SP2 problem. Try turning off the SP2 firewall.

Go to control panel and then security center. Click on the general tab and shut down the Windows Firewall. That should do it. I'm not sure, considering I just avoided the whole damn SP2 thing, but give it a try.

Strange, the biggest install shouldn't do any checks for the CD.

I believe FO2 has securom or Laserlok protection (in the US). Lemme check real quick...Laserlock.

Which was notorious for not working on certain cdrom (and dvd) drives.

I think it's a SP2 problem, it's known for preventing quite a few other games from running as well. You should check with Microsoft to see if they have a fix for it yet or not.

Sorry for taking so long to reply, but I have just got rid of Windows XP (for many, many reasons) and went back to Windows 2000.
I can get the game to work fine so it was probably was SP2.
    Thank for the help.

Not surprising, considering how awful SP2 is.
