how to see the x & y figures

I feel like a real dunce, but in the walkthrough and in many posts there are x & y indices mentioned, how do you get these to appear on the screen,

If you press the x key during the gameplay I believe it displays the on-screen co-ordinates.

If you press the "L" button it displays the on screen coordinates.
