thieving?

Is it possible to steal from a shop keeper then sell the stolen goods back to them?

When I tried it earlier I could not sell the gem I stole back, and not just that, it wouldn't let me sell any of my other items until I dropped the stolen gem.

Not possible in BG1. The only Fence(s) appear in BG2.

Just sell your goods to another merchant.

No can do, the stolen item is flagged. You can only actually wear it but you can't sell anywhere in the BGWorld.

You can't? I have pickpocketed a lot of people in BG and there had to be a merchant I have picked... I can't remember though so you are probably right

But you can sell your best equipments, steal back and use them...

Pickpocketing isn't the same as stealing. You can pickpockect someone and sell the item okay - I do this all the time.
