I'm not sure if any of you live in NYC or are familiar with it, but I just got back from this year's PR day parade and it was, well, INCREDIBLE.

On an off-topic note (this is Whatnots, people), the "Puerto Rican Day" episode of Seinfeld (one of the last ones, I believe) was absolutely incredible. Too funny!

Hey, TBR, you know that they've promised never to show that episode again? Apparently some Puerto Ricans were offended that Kramer was stomping on their flag.

Wow. Even though I am an avid Seinfeld fan, I never knew that, and it angers me that this obviously frivolous act (it's Seinfeld, anyway) was taken so seriously.

IMHO, Seinfeld will never be as good as Frasier.

SlimShogun - I'm surprised to see that coming from you since you took umbrage with that Abercrombie and Fitch fiasco with the T-shirts. I'd have thought you'd understand how someone might be offended by what another finds funny.

BTA, I could feel that post coming from a mile away.
While I understand how my views may be perceived as hypocritical, I feel the advertisement of racial slurs, generalizations, and stereotypes (however cute they may seem) on clothing is a far cry from what Kramer did. If you remember, Kramer extolls the value of being a Puerto Rican in another episode, and there are a myriad of anti-basically everything (including Nazi) connotations in a large portion of Seinfeld episodes. If we take this one episode as a microcosm of the Seinfeld series, it would make the series seem racist or prejudiced. But we must view the series as a whole in order to truly understand the message being sent...the creators were (and are) not truly saying anything negative about Puerto Ricans. I feel this is different than the A&F fiasco because launching a clothing like to profit off the "humorous" or "funny" stereotypes of Asians or Asian-Americans is taking the issue of "What's funny, and what's innapropriate?" to the level, in my opinion, of innapropriate. Please try not to delete this post, if you don't have to...last time I did this it was considered "arguing." |

Looks like some people need to sign up for sensitivity courses. Not ethnic sensitivity courses, mind you.
First Amendment sensitivity courses. |

Not at all SlimShogun, there's no reason why I'd want to delete your post. I was honestly curious as to why you would be angry over somebody finding the Kramer thing offensive, when you were offended by the A&F T-shirts.
To me, the A&F T-shirts were no big deal, yet to you they are. To you the Kramer situation is no big deal but to others it is. Is that so hard to understand? I don't care whether you find it offensive or not (I didn't find it offensive), it just seemed strange that you got angry over someone else's finding something offensive. I just thought you would understand where they were coming from, whether you agreed with them or not. |

I was not angry because "someone thought it offensive," I was angry because the network execs thought there was enough anti-episode support to put a moratorium on broadcasting it...
