Just going to format, I have these data disks for all my files. I cannot seem to delete anything from the disk but I am very sure it is possible because I have done it before. It gives me a message about write protection when I delete a file and I can’t remember how I done it last time.

Could you be more precise? You mean the Hard Disks of your PC or floppies? If you cannot delete things from the harddisk, that means that Windows is using a file and denied access to it. A simple restart should help, but if it keeps denying the access, run DOS mode or limited Windows mode or any mode in which the file(s) is(are) not used by the system.

CD recordable disk etc etc 700mb write all files on it etc etc etc
It is a round thing with a hole in it, same as a music CD except you put files on and write them to the disk. |

That sarcasm was a bit uncalled for, wasn't it? he was only trying to help and you were being a bit vague.
Anyway, you can only re-write over CDs if they were re-writable CDs in the first place. Otherwise they can only be used once. |

Not to know how to decide about a CD whether it's CD-R or CD-RW is really funny indeed
It is most likely written into its box and/or cover.
