This is a summary of a newscast that I saw on Tuesday night. Since I've been seeing all these posts about hating school, it seemed appropriate to start a discussion about these sort of actions.
The event: A local school suffered an act of vandalism, likely by students, amounting to more than $10,000 worth of damage. My opinion: I don't have a problem with these kids not liking school, but the fact that they had to lash out and cost the taxpayers a great sum of money is both ignorant and stupid. I really hope they catch the perpetrators, and force them to pay, because I for one, do not. I'm uncertain if acts like this are unique to America, or if they are caused by a deeper problem than simply hatred toward the educational institution. Note that since my time is limited, I've greatly cut back on the substance here, but it should still provide enough information for a debate or some form of discussion here. the reason school is hated is because it's boring and has rules that seem to be there to annoy people - in my school you can only wear a necklace if it has a cross on it, other religious symbols aren't actually allowed, even though it's supposed to be allowed, teachers NEVER follow the rules - why do they expect us too? I mean, come on! it's unfair!

not only americans.
I live in denmark and my school had some things trashed too, was at a party though and some other people came in. But vandalism like that is not (not that I have heard of a case THAT expensive) foreign here either. |

I certainly don't hate school. It may be that I'm in my final two years of school, and am doing subjects I actually enjoy rather than being forced to do subjects in which I have little talent in. But nobody in the 5 years that I've been there has caused vandalism like that. In fact, the worst there is a a bit of graffeti in the toilets. But I guess that's mainly because I go to a private school, and everyone there is there more or a less because they want to, not because they are being forced to by parents/government.

Such things happen here in Holland and not only to schools. Because people want to look taugh they vandalize things. They think they are all that, but they aren't.
I didn't always liked school actually, but never felt the urge to vandalize it. The last few years of high-school were fun however. [ September 19, 2002, 21:21: Message edited by: Silverblade ] |

I don't understand why everyone hates school. Sure, it sucks; people ostracize you, the teachers are hypocrites, you get screwed over by homework and studying, but it's not like all of that's worth a decent (and free!) education.

In my years of high school, all I've see are a couple of broken window panes.
Does graffiti count? (I know some people think it is a form of art.) There is some of that on my school's walls, but some of it is because of rivalling schools. |

I hate school, period.
But still, I love to learn, so school is a necessary evil. I have had several traumatic experiences in school, just about everything from mental abuse to having scissors thrown at me. Fortunately that all ended when I came to my current school. Here no one has ever done anything to me, and o that I am grateful. I used to harw comprehensive school because they never managed to teach me anything, seeing as I was already familiar with the things we studied. Now, in upper seconndary, I actually have to STUDY, and doing that is what I am so not good at. I hate school at the moment because I can't stand sitting in class listening to someone to yammer on. I can't stand making notes, watchoing films and the like. I hate having to wake up early, sit nearly an hour in the bus to travel to my school, I hate that I am forced to learn Swedish... (Nothing against the country or the language, it's just the single subject I have no grasp on) I know that education is important, so I bear my burden, even if I complain very loudly about it. About vandalism.... I haven't seen it in such a scale, but I must admit that I once particvipated in an endeavour that landed a few eggs into the ventilaton ducts near the staffroom... as well as a little message that was written into one of the doors, nothing bad, just "<teacher's name> We love you!"... but that's about it. Ara (TIred... hungry.... headachy.... and forgetting her CDs to thew gH so she is in a state of not being able to DL anything today...) |

I hate school.
I hated it when I was "younger" and then in 5-6th grade I loved it. Now I hate it again. I have started a new school now with lots of more people and stuffs. Messy and all. Boring. ****ty friends who ignores me and doesn't talk to me anymore. Everything is bad. I had to start in a different class from my two best "friends..." and the class I am going in now is full of nerds who think they know everything. Only have one "friend" here who is changing class next year to the class with my best "friends" and leaving me to unknown idiots. As I see it right now it is worth killing myself to let it all slip away. ![]() [ September 20, 2002, 20:40: Message edited by: Eilonwy ] |

Some of the reasons we hate school are these:
1. Understanding. An adversary is someone whose actions are misunderstood enough to be hated. In that way, we younguns are nearsighted enough to be only pessimistic and to claim school is stupid because of our own faults in living, which make school a bad experience. For example, adolescent idiocy or personality disorders like negativism. These can be cured by finding purpose and understanding everyone's role and why, and accepting it for unchangeable (unless you know a way to change it for the better). 2. This doesn't mean that school is always good and only pessimism is a problem (which is, oddly, the wrong-doing thinking of many teachers, especially coaches) - there are some horrors beyond mention in modern schools, regardless of attitude. Number two is reality - usually school really does suck. This can be cured by one of three things. Either live with it and never think about it, be a total optimist and think only of what's good (probably the best way to go about it) or give up to the teachers and be nothing for the rest of your life, consequences of The System. 3. Some teachers (well, most teachers), on the other hand, understand so little about their important role in society that they perform erroneously, poorly, in teaching - or imbue racism, personal qualms, etcetera, into their work. Or they are simply stupid. Unqualified. Same ways to deal with this as #2. Don't piss off a teacher. Hold it down. They have more power, defined by the ability to push you around without consequence to them, than you can dream of. From this type of meaningless control stems school shootings, the moron's way of dealing with it. Anyway, I'm sick of thinking about it and I have homework to do . So fill in numbers 4 through 3,000,000,000 on the rest of the list, if you will.

i mean sure...wakeup early in the morning, go to a place so inredibly boring you cant even fall asleep.
Is it really worth it to trash it so? I mean when you spend that time vandalizing you could be somewhere else having a good time. The people who do vandalize are just niave little kids ho dont understand that when they look back when their grown-ups they'll be like...hey its not just the numbers and letters i learned about, its something that made me who i am today. Why can't there just be happy people around dudes?

Hmm im in my 5th year of secondayr school (year 11 for those in england, like me). The first couple of years were pretty bad. But in the the end of the 3rd year and the beginning of the 4th year it all got a lot better. Last year was when i got to choose my subject and am now only doing one subject i dislike (and that only because of the teacher). There are subjects which i can switch off in and think about other things or just doze, you can sleep in class, you just have to learn to do it with your eyes open
And the best thing about school is the afterschool, getting to see my girlfriend everyday rocks different school but it's only 5 minutes away Back to the original vandalisim topic - it's only happened once and that was about 11 people in once class who trashed this 'temporary' (although it's now been re-furnished) block - that was falling down already. They caused £2000-£3000 of damage. 10 got internal suspensions and the other got expelled (but the teachers had been trying to get rid of him for ages, discrimination because his older brother had been a trouble maker). |

I don't hate school.
I used to like school when I was 12, but now, after 4 years it's getting more and more boring. You see, we have this stupid school system that makes I now have to study 13(!) subjects. There are some subjects like English and German that I like but there's also physics and *shudder* math. You know the feeling: there's nothing new, exciting. You've seen all the teachers all the classrooms. The breaks and PE are fun though. The problem is that we don't have the feeling that we're learning something new, so basically I'm indifferent to school. (and looking forward to the University ) I go there, stay the hours I have to, do my homework and that's it. For the rest school doesn't really play a major part in my life anymore. Now about the vandalism. Some kids like to trash bikes and minor things, but I've never heard about real bad vandalism. |

I hate school. I had straight As for abotu 7 or so times in a row, and my mom threatens me that IF I don't get into a certain super high school (one of the best in the US), she'll throw my computer away, and she did it 4 years ago, when I got a C, and only got one back when my uncle gave me one in christmas. I hate school, ot it can just be my own life that stinks.

Arabwel, please don't be offended by this, but...
Quote:
I don't know what's up with this, but I've never seen the ostracization and such that the majority of you are talking about. Granted, I was always in the honors program and never had much contact with kids outside of that, but you'd think I'd have seen that sort of thing (especially in America.) I didn't like the middle two years of high school, but that was only because of my own bad attitude toward it. After junior year ended, I decided to get my act together and actually enjoyed senior year. And, to whoever said that they never heard of vandalism being this bad, this is the worst case of school vandalism in US history. |

My last years at school were mere fun. I wasn't living with my parents anymore, but with a guitar teacher.
My class was a bit exotic, me too. We were calling our teachers with their first names. We rarely made our homework and we were writing our own letters of excuse, when we were to lazy to go to school. Now you know, why Germany was bad at the Pisa Study. But physical education was real hard. I had to play basketball and was always looking as if i wanted to bite in the ball. And my final examination was quite good. |

Rastor, the problem is that the teachers whom I say yammer are doing exactly that... All they say is already told in the book, and it is a rare thing indeed someone says sonmething that isnät in the book. I case of a teacher who tells us to screw the book and listen what he says, I actually do listen and make notes... itäs hard to explain, actually...
Besides, in Uni I can choose what I study, no more compulsory horrors... Besides, just went thorough my economics exam. Didnät read any of my notes, nearly didnät read at all... And I am expecting a good grade, my only problem being I couldnät remember a few definitons... Ara (Actually feeling good for a change) |
