It's just an over the top American commercialisation. And as for getting rid of the trick or treaters I have two methods. My personal favourite is pretending not to be in, but for persistent ones answer the door and scream at them. never fails

The true Halloween was a time for people to pray for those in pergetry. It was an old catholic celebration thingy.

No, no, before that. Halloween was placed on an equinox or something, it was the same date as an old pagan festival, I just can't remember what it was they celebrated. I think it was something to do with the weakening of barriers between the worlds, and it was meant to appease the spirits, either to ask someone for help or to be rid of vindictive ones, I can't rememer, but I'm not certain of any of this at all.

Halloween is based on a Pagen holiday. The Christian name for it is "All Hallows Eve" or "All Souls Day"
The Pagen holiday was to honor the deceased and to appease their souls so they would not come back to haunt the living.
