Sorry if this is somewhere else.
Frosty has recieved this: 0031-623 913 133 CONFIDENTIAL BUSINESS PROPOSAL You may be surprised to receive this letter from me since you do not know me personally. The purpose of my introduction is that I am Madabe Godwin the first son of James Madabe , a farmer in Zimbabwe who was recently murdered in the land dispute in my country. I got your contact through the chambers of commerce hence decided to write you. Before the death of my father, he had taken me to Johannesburg to deposit the sum of US9.000.00 (Nine million United States dollars), in one of the private security company, as he foresaw the looming danger in Zimbabwe this money was deposited in a box as gem stones to avoid much demurrage from security company. This amount was meant for the purchase of new machines and chemicals for the Farms and establishment of new farms in Swaziland. This land problem came when Zimbabwean President Mr.Robert Mugabe introduced a new Land Act Reform wholly affecting the rich white farmers and some few black farmers, and this resulted to the killing and mob action by Zimbabwean war veterans and some lunatics in the society. In fact a lot of people were killed because of this Land reform Act for which my father was one of the victims. It is against this background that, I and my family fled Zimbabwe for fear of our lives and are currently staying in the Netherlands where we are seeking political asylum and moreso have decided to transfer my father's money to a more reliable foreign account. since the law of Netherlands prohibits a refugee (asylum seeker) to open any bank account or to be involved in any financial transaction throughout the territorial zone of Netherlands, As the eldest son of my father, I am saddled with the responsibility of seeking a genuine partner that could assist me without the knowledge of my government who are bent on taking everything we have got. The South African government seems to be playing along with them. I am faced with the dilemma of moving this amount of money out of South Africa for fear of going through the same experience in future, both countries have similar political history. As a businessman,I am seeking for a partner who I have to entrust my future and that of my family in his hands, I must let you know that this transaction is risk free. If you accept to assist me and my family, all I want you to do for me, is to make an arrangements with the security company to clear the consignment(funds) from their afiliate office here in the Netherlands as i have already given directives for the consignment to be brought to the Netherlands from South Africa. But before then all modalities will have to be put in place like change of ownership to the consignment and more importantly this money I intend to use for investment. I have two options for you. Firstly you can choose to have certain percentage of the money for nominating your account for this transaction. Or you can go into partnership with me for the proper profitable investment of the money in your country. Whichever the option you want, feel free to notify me. I have also mapped out 5% of this money for all kinds of expenses incurred in the process of this transaction. If you do not prefer a partnership I am willing to give you 10% of the money while the remaining 85% will be for my investment in your country. Contact me with the above email address , while I implore you to maintain the absolute secrecy required in this transaction. Thanks, GOD BLESS YOU Yours Faithfully Godwin Madabe. She is worried about how they got her address and everything and wht is in the attatchement - anything anyone knows about it? [ January 11, 2003, 19:36: Message edited by: 8people ] |

Yeah, I would also like to add this as well.
Just recently, one of my PC's was contaminated with a virus of somesort. I ran a virus scan on it, as well as installing a fireshield on it. The damned thing keeps finding three files or whatever. ALEVIR.exe BRASIL.exe SCRSVR.exe At least I think those were the ones. They seem to effect the access to the internet. Does anyone else know wether they might be conected with the wierd e-mail? I did pick up the virus a couple of days before reading the e-mail however. So I'm not sure. Frosty (Thanks in advance to anyone who knows anythink.) The only place I can think that anyone would have access to this e-mail address would be on only three places on the internet. As well as Yahoo, but I would have thout that would have been confidentual. EDIT: Aswell as all that, I have never even heard of the guy that wrote this mysterious e-mail, neither have I heard of his e-mail address. I live in England, and I don't deal in dollars $$. And I'm 14 Godamn years old, and not likelt to help with someones finacial mumbo-jumbo. BTW, this is an on-line e-mail address with Yahoo. The e-mail was addressed from - <madagodwin2@lycos.com> [ January 11, 2003, 19:51: Message edited by: Frostbite ] |

As soon as you get that kinda crap in the inbox, I suggest you delete it, the attachment might even contain virusses or spyware.
How they got you e-mail is easy explainable, as soon as you give your e-mailaddress to a website, there´s a big change the owner will sell you e-mailaddress for money to other companies, for three purposes, SPAM SPAM and SPAM. So just delete the mail. PS. Now that they got your e-mailaddress.... say hello to pornadds [ January 11, 2003, 19:56: Message edited by: Morgoth ] |

As soon as you see anything like "business proposal" and that it's from any African country, it's a scam or spam. In either case, you should delete it without looking at it.

Too late, heh-heh...
In any case; hopefully you did not think anything 'serious' from that e-mail? As to the virus: do you use IE? Is it up-to-date? IIRC, IE has a bug in it that causes it to auto-execute all attachments in a e-mail...

Anyone else get bored at deleting that crap? And the best way to get the porno spam to stop is just delete it. Don't click the unsubscribe button or they'll know your email address is active and then sell it to other porno spammers. Enjoy it? Yeah those with a credit card would after all thats the way to pay isn't it? They say free, but your cards details just in case. And I thought that nigerian scam was a winner after reading how many people sent cash over to it on Tal's link

I have two accounts and two approaches: In hotmail account I have consequently used domain banning to get rid of spammers. On my other account I just delete the crap and when I deleted it it will also be deleted on my mail server (it's just that I haven't yet understood the secrets of Eudora's filters
).

If you can afford the bandwidth and time to learn I suggest you set up your own email server. It will allow you set up proxy email addresses that foward to your real email address for when you need to sign up for web sites, so if your email is sold for spam, you mearly block the proxy which was sold.
IE, my address is a 13 digit number, however for this site I have beverage-sp@lotech.org, so if Tal suddendly turns evil I mearly block that and spam is gone. It's set up to give me beverage-[whatever] for whatever I need. Outgoing is beverage@ which accepts no imcoming email. This system is almost fool proof so long as you keep your real address private. Some websites offer this service for a price, however it's better to learn for yourself. [ January 13, 2003, 21:23: Message edited by: Alex ] |

That's not really relevant since the e-mail adress is always different. They change their fictious identities as fast as their names. So writing back is not very useful. I did so and there never was a reply. Perhaps because I banned their domain in my e-mail filter ... who knows

There's another way for them to get addresses as well. All they have to do is use a program that sends stuff out to every possible e-mail addresses. Sure, a lot don't turn up to be active, but some obviously get through.
