Anyone think that a WoT movie would be possible to make? The whole "fantasy" and elves, Dwarfs, Dragon's and magic concept isn't exactly world wide popular as far as I know of and it would take quite a lot of movies to make it, so it would probably need to be compressed a bit if it was in a movie type format.

I don't think this sort of thing was really popular until the LotR books and with a lot of the reviews I've been seeing on Amazon and other places the book series isn't very popular, unless it's just the latest book they are talking about.

Could be difficult considering the scope of the books and the fact that there's at least 10 so far, it would probably work best as a mini-series or something like that. However, it probably isn't as internationally popular as it would need to be in order to get made. As for not being well-liked, there is a bit of debate as to where it starts going downhill but most people seem to agree that the first 5 at least are very enjoyable.

Anyway, I for one would welcome it if it ever happened. Actually, the success of LotR opens the gates for a lot more fantasy movies to be made.

RJ will have to finish his series sometime in the next 500 years for that to be possible.

And since he's already millking WOT for all its worth money wise, imagine what the movies will be like.

There'll be like 5 movies for every book with almost no plot development between each movie and countless thousands of brainless inbred fools to snap them up and rave about how cool it is.

With zillions of merchandise! "Buy your Forsaken action figures now, kids and Still your mothers before letting Myrrdraal drag them off screaming!" " Authentic Sword that is not a Sword!" "[plastic] Cloaks that do not move in the wind!" "TrollocMon, the collectible card game!"

Oh yes. It will also cater to all the feminazis outside. Ladies, fold your arms and sniff! Altogether now. Those who have braids can tug on them.

Bah. RJ, you can write damn well. But you're no longer an artist in my eyes.

I give this idea the thumbs down.

lol, considering how unforgiving you seem to be Shura that can only be a bad thing, from what I hear only book 9+ is bad and almost everyone gets writers block, wouldn't you if you had a 20 book long fic Shura?

@ casey - The Wheel of Time series really does start going rapidly downhill after book 5. In my opinion, book 6 is still decent but books seven and up are absolutely dreadful. There are a few people who think that the later books are good but the vast majority agree that they are just plain bad.

The plot just slows to a crawl and Jordan seems determined to pointlessly drag things out and to do so he keeps inventing more uber-powerful characters in order to top those he has already introduced. There are a few good moments in the later books but they are few and far between. Shura is certainly not alone in the belief that Jordan is just slapping together garbage in order to milk the franchise for everything it is worth.

After book five I would have gladly proclaimed that the Wheel of Time was the the best current fantasy series but now I could name many others that are better as a whole.

Martin is more promising.

Unless you want a Wheel of Time version of DBZ, then do not put WOT into any visual format. Think about it, both have absolutely no plot development besides making everyone stronger.

(the only character I like in the WOT is matt, I just skim all the other stories so I can read his, lol)

I agree with Fade. I'm one of those few people that found even the last books great, but I must admit it was only thanks to the Mat stories, which apparantly grow more and more important as the story (slowly) progresses. The problem why WoT is crawling is because there are to many story lines for one series. RJ should have been smarter by taking some of those storylines into a different series which would still be intertwined with WoT but only released afterwards as an explanation for some of the actions that were done "behind the scenes" of WoT. I have seen some authors do this and it works pretty well.

Martin doesn't have this problem since he kills of every storyline he creates with a very simple trick: if the main plot person is dead, then there is no more plot. That way he never has too many storylines whilst still permitting him to be creative by creating alot of them.

Well do these characters he creates have any purpose to the plot? I'm guessing this would be a voided question as would assuming the reason he is writing the way he is, considering the fact that there are 10 books to go, you never know he might still be the writing genius we all took him for afterall.

And about the uber-powerful characters.
Well ok then lets take a look at the introduction to the series, the prolog Dragon mount. This was set in (as far as I can tell) the previous age to what the books are set in now and seeing as the forsakin and a bunch of other guys including Shai'tan and (?)Lews Therin(?) manage to break the world, (very hard thing to do btw) my guess is that, it would take a lot of these uber powerful characters to do this, so some of these sideline powerful people could be included later on.

I'm not trying to support any argument one way or another I'm trying to open myself to any possibility's of why he's writing the way he is at the moment.

Ah! It is so nice to see another soul get caught in the wonderful web of WoT. The development is similar for everyone and now you start talking about a movie or series. Mmm those were the days, I myself was actually a diehard WoT fanatic, I even have hte illustrated guide. To add to the current discussion my favourite WoT has always been book six, "The Lord of Chaos" but after that it rapidly went downhill, I was starting to get hope when Winter's Heart was better than A Path of Daggers but Crossroads of Twilight an immense disapointment. I have not given up yet though! I love the WoT world and I am going to continue to give RJ my money, but I aint buying the New Spring novel, that is over the top, I bought the New Spring short story, I aint paying again for the novel.

As for the putting it on the screen I dont think it would be that impossible, I even think RJ have had some kind of contact with a company many years ago. I wouldnt mind seeing a big fantasy epic turn to the TV or cinema, a long mini-series like Shogun seems to be good format.
As for casting there is only one idea I have had for many years and that one is impossible, but a younger Clint Eastwood would have been perfect as Lan.

I think a Dragonlance Chronicles movie would be more compelling and entertaining than the other options.

Good characters.
Great opportunity for special effects.
Dragon-Fire on the big screen!

I agree with Mathetetais but not for the same reasons (not that I disagree with his comments but Jordan/Martin's books have interesting characters and opportunities for special effects too).

In my mind the main thing that would allow Dragon Lance to be better for film purposes is that it has a relatively simple plot that tends to limit itself to a constant core group of characters.

For most of the series there is either one or two groups of characters that you are following instead of having to keep track of 57 different groups of people scattered all over the continent each dealing with their own subplots.

The Kilted Crusader will become famous soon enough

Imagine if they did make a movie for WoT or A Song of Ice And Fire, and the result turned out to be terrible. To me, it would feel like destroying a fine work of art.
